WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's soccer team did something Saturday that no team has been able to do all season — keep Augsburg's Ashley St. Aubin from scoring a goal.
Â
Unfortunately, while the Cardinals won the St. Aubin battle — snapping the Auggie senior's goal-scoring streak at 10 games — they were not able to win the war, as Augsburg scored the game's only goal in the 28
th minute in dealing Saint Mary's a 1-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at Ochrymowycz Field.
Â
With St. Aubin silenced — managing just one shot attempt, thanks in large part to the defensive play of Saint Mary's
Kaley Manglitz (Onalaska, Wis.) — the Auggies had to look elsewhere for offensive punch.
Â
And in stepped Tess Ryan, who took a feed from Callie Athey and beat Cardinal goalkeeper
Gabriella Pederson (Chaska, Minn.) for the game's only goal at 28:23 of the first half.
Â
Pederson finished the afternoon with three saves, while Augsburg goalkeeper Emily Chapman stopped the only Cardinal shot she faced in posting the shutout.
Â
The Cardinals (0-3-0 MIAC, 5-3-0 overall) are back in action on Wednesday, traveling to Northfield, Minn., for a 4 p.m. conference showdown against St. Olaf.
