MADISON, Wis. — The trend continues.
Â
For the third time in as many games, the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team played a game that ended in a shutout.
Â
And, for the second time in those three games, it was the Cardinals who came out on the winning end of the final score.
Â
Saint Mary's scored a pair of second-half goals — the first by
Robbie Sobczak (Cloquet, Minn.) and the second by
Josh Balsiger (Camas, Wash.) — as the Cardinals dealt host Edgewood a 2-0 nonconference setback Saturday evening.
Â
After a scoreless first half — in which Saint Mary's held a 9-2 advantage in shots attempts, and a 2-1 edge in shots on goal — the Cardinals finally broke the deadlock 12 minutes into the second half, as Sobczak (netted his first of the season to give SMU a 1-0 advantage.
Â
An advantage that doubled three minutes later, when Balsiger (found the back of the net for the second time this season to give the Cardinals a 2-0 cushion.
Â
And two goals was more than enough with goalkeepers
Jimmy Perreault (Batavia, Ill.) and
Sam Morris (Hockinson, Wash.) between the pipes for the Cardinals, as both Perreault and Morris made one save — Perreault's in the first half and Morris' in the second — in recording the shutout. Edgewood goalkeeper Brendon Martin, meanwhile, finished with four saves.
Â
After back-to-back road games, the Cardinals (2-1-0 overall) return home for the first of two straight home games Wednesday, hosting Carroll in a 7 p.m. nonconference matchup at Ochrymowycz Field.
