RIPON, Wis. — Scoring goals has certainly not been a problem for the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team in general — and for
Jordyn Matthews (Seattle, Wash.) in particular.
Â
After netting five goals in their first two games combined — both victories — the Cardinal offense was back on display on Sunday, as Saint Mary's erupted for three more goals in rolling to a 3-0 nonconference win over Ripon.
Â
And leading the Cardinals' offensive charge — again — was Matthews, who posted her second straight two-goal game, netting a pair of unassisted tallies in the second half in helping Saint Mary's to its second straight 3-0-0 start.
Â
Mary Loy (Burien, Wash.) got things rolling for the Cardinals, netting her second of the season — off an assist from
Genesis Capacio (Las Vegas, Neb.) — in the game's 11th minute.
Â
Saint Mary's would maintain that one-goal advantage through the final 34 minutes of the opening and, and seven minutes into the second — before Matthews took things over.
Â
The Cardinal freshman — who has now scored five goals in the Cardinals' first three games — netted her first of the game in the 52nd minute and added her second seven minutes later to close out the scoring.
Â
Gabriella Pederson (Chaska, Minn.) recorded her second straight shutout in goal, stopping both Red Hawk shots she faced, while Ripon goalkeeper Stefani Zeiger finished with seven saves.
Â
The Cardinals (3-0-0 overall) return home to Ochrymowycz Field on Wednesday, playing host to UW-Superior in a 5 p.m. nonconference contest.
