WINONA, Minn. — After their first game of the new year on Saturday, the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team is still searching for its first win of the new decade.
Â
Then again, the Cardinals haven't lost in 2020, either.
Â
Thanks to an
Anya Hafiz (Woodbury, Minn.) goal late in the third period, the Cardinals collected their second overtime tie of the season, battling visiting UW-Stevens Point to a 2-2 draw at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.
Â
The Cardinals'
Carson Sheridan (Waunakee, Wis.) snapped a scoreless deadlock midway through the second period, scoring her first goal of the season — off assists from Hafiz and
Delaney Wolf (Bismarck, N.D.) — to give Saint Mary's a 1-0 advantage heading into the third period.
Â
UW-Stevens Point's Mary Kremer pulled the Pointers even — and then ahead — with ba ck-to-back goals two minutes apart early in the third period, but it was Hafiz to the rescue, as she banged a
Carolyn Chrastka (Franklin Park, Ill.) rebound past UW-SP goalie Olivia Schultz to pull the Cardinals even, 2-2.
Â
Saint Mary's outshot UW-Stevens Point 3-1 in the five-minute overtime period, but neither team could net the game-winner.
Â
Ary Ziakas (Palatine, Ill.) finished with 18 saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Schultz made 28 saves — including 13 in the third period.
Â
The Cardinals (2-6-2 overall) are right back on their home ice at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena on Sunday, playing host to Marian in a 2 p.m. nonconference game. The Pointers (6-3-2 overall) hit the road again on Sunday, heading to Augsburg's Ed Saugestad Rink in Minneapolis, Minn., for a 2 p.m. nonconference showdown with the Auggies
