WINONA, Minn. — After managing just two goals — combined — in 65 minutes of play in Friday's 1-1 tie, the Saint Mary's University and St. Olaf men's hockey teams decided to turn up the offense heat a little bit in the rematch.
Â
Make that more than a little bit, as Saint Mary's and St. Olaf combined for six first-period goals — including three in a span of 44 seconds.
Â
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, it was St. Olaf that scored four of those six first-period goals — and the Oles made it stand up, dealing Saint Mary's a 5-3 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.
Â
Saint Mary's — which scored its Friday night goal with five minutes remaining in regulation — was not about to wait 55 minutes to get on the scoreboard on Saturday.
Â
In fact, the Cardinals only needed 62 seconds.
Â
Sam Hanson (Eau Claire, Wis.) gave Saint Mary's a quick 1-0 lead with his third of the season just 1:02 into the first period. St. Olaf, however, answered with three goals in a six-minute span to take a 3-1 lead.
Â
Seth Kamrass (Peachtree Corners, Ga.) scored his first of the season just 26 seconds after Kyle Rimbach netted the Oles' third to cut the gap to 3-2, only to have Mitch Dolter answer 18 seconds later to give St. Olaf a 4-2 lead after one period.
Â
The offensive onslaught mellowed in the game's middle period, with the Cardinals pulling within one on the only goal of the second period —Â
Tommy Stang's (Mendota Heights, Minn.) team-leading 11th of the season from
Kyle Meeh (Fenton, Mo.) and
Trevor Wilhelm (St. Louis, Mo.) on the power play
Â
The Cardinals peppered the St. Olaf net with 12 third-period shots looking for the equalizer, but Ole goalie Noah Parker was up to the challenge, and Kyle Rimbach scored his second of the game into an empty net with 1:02 remaining to seal the win.
Â
Saint Mary's held a commanding 41-14 advantage in shots on goal, but Parker kept the Cardinals at bay, stopping all 27 SMU shots in the second and third periods combined.
Â
The Cardinals (6-7-1 MIAC, 9-12-2 overall) continue their quest for an MIAC Tournament berth with a pair of home games against Saint John's to close out the regular season next weekend. Saint Mary's and SJU will square off at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena at 7 p.m. on Friday, with Saturday's second game set for 2 p.m. The Oles' (2-9-2 MIAC, 4-16-2 overall) final two games of the season will take place at the St. Olaf Ice Arena, in Northfield, Minn., as St. Olaf entertains Concordia in a pair of MIAC contests. Game 1 is set for 7 p.m. on Friday, with the rematch taking place at 2 p.m. the following afternoon.
