OWATONNA, Minn. — It had been five years since he Saint Mary's University women's tennis team squared off against Northwestern (Iowa) in the programs' first-ever meeting — a 5-4 Cardinal victory.
And after Saint Mary's performance on Saturday, the Red Raiders might want to wait another five years — or longer — to face the Cardinals again.
Saint Mary's dropped just nine games in winning five of the six singles matches, as the Cardinals cruised to a 7-2 nonconference win over the Red Raiders at the Owatonna Indoor Tennis Center.
Saint Mary's jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles, getting wins from
Colleen Lois (Green Bay, Wis.)/
Cassandra Barr (Eau Claire, Wis.) and Zoe Becker (St. James, Minn.)/
Maggie Frye (Colorado Springs, Colo.).
Becker led the charge in singles, throwing up a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6, while Frye and Barr each dropped just one game in winning 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 and 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2, respectively,
Kailee Johnson (Rochester, Minn.) chipped in a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5.
Kennedy Morgan (Green Bay, Wis.) recorded Saint Mary's other singles win with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 3.
The Cardinals (4-1 overall) close out their three-match weekend on Sunday, as they entertain Gustavus in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup at the Winona Tennis Center. First serve is set for noon.
