CLERMONT, Fla. — The Saint Mary's University fastpitch softball team made the most of their final at-bat Saturday morning in their spring trip game against Northwestern.
The Cardinals, who squandered a 2-0, third-inning lead, entered the bottom of the seventh inning trailing the Eagles 3-2.
And they exited with a 4-3 victory.
Saint Mary's scored twice in the seventh — the first on a Northwestern error and the game-winner on a one-out, sacrifice fly by Carey — en route to the come-from-behind victory.
The Cardinals jumped out to a quick 2-0 advantage, scoring solo runs in both the first and third innings.
Justine Schultz (Winona, Minn.) led off the game with a single, stole second, and scored on an
Amber Chow (West St. Paul, Minn.) infield single. The Cardinals padded the lead to 2-0 on a two-out, bases-loaded walk to
Erin Sullivan in the third.
From there, the Cardinals' offense stalled, and the Northwestern offense hit its stride — scoring single runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings for a 3-2 lead.
Setting up the Cardinals' seventh-inning heroics.
Schultz, Chow, and
Hallie Schmeling (Onalaska, Wis.) were the offensive leaders for the Cardinals, all collecting three hits, while
Paige Gudmundson (Plainview, Minn.) chipped in two. Chow went the distance in the pitcher's circle, limiting Northwestern to just two runs on seven hits, while walking three and striking out two.
