SAINT MARY'S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT |
• FOR THE RECORD: Saint Mary's heads into Friday's conference match against Saint Benedict sporting a 7-14 overall record. The Cardinals saw their MIAC record dip to 3-2 with last Friday's 3-0 loss to Hamline.
• AGAINST THE EAGLES: The Cardinals got 13 kills and 11 digs from Ciarra McNally in last Tuesday's 3-0 loss to UW-La Crosse. Mandy Schmidt (Mitchell, S.D.) dished out 10 assists and DeJaye Baab (Wabasha, Minn.) was second to McNally with eight digs. McNally accounted for 10 of the team's 11 kills through two sets vs. UW-L, and recorded all but five of SMU's 18 kills in the three-set match.
• END OF THE ROAD: This weekend's matches at Saint Benedict and Concordia are the final road matches of the season for the Cardinals — who played their first 17 matches of the season on the road. Saint Mary's will close out the regular-season with home conference matches against Macalester, Bethel, St. Olaf, and Gustavus.
• CAREER PERFORMANCES: McNally — who recorded a program-record 32 kills in the Cardinals' 3-2 victory against Carleton on Sept. 15 — notched a career-high 18 digs in the Cardinals' 3-1 win over St. Scholastica on Oct. 1. … McNally's 32 kills against Carleton were not only a career-high, but also a single-match, program record, breaking the previous mark of 31, set by Brandi Blattner on Oct. 21, 2016. … Braidyn Ruetten (Holmen, Wis.) and Pigorsch each turned in career performances against Carroll on Sept. 24., with Ruetten pounded out a career-high 17 kills, while Pigorsch added a career-best 14. … Amerongen posted a career-best 13 kills in the Cardinals' 3-1 win over Westminster (Mo.) on Sept. 17. … Faith Van Erp (Sartell, Minn.) racked up a career-high 19 kills in the Cardinals' 3-2 loss to Marian on Sept. 11.
• DOUBLE-DOUBLES: McNally picked up her fifth double-double of the season with her 14-kill, 11-dig effort against UW-La Crosse last Tuesday. McNally is tied for the team lead with Schmidt, who picked up her fifth double-double of the season — recording 21 assists and adding 14 digs against St. Scholastica on Oct. 1. Clem posted career-highs in both assists (30) and digs (10) en route to her first collegiate double-double against Carleton on Sept. 15.
• ON THE ATTACK: McNally has recorded at least 10 kills 12 times this season — including four matches of 20 of more kills — and enters Friday's match against Saint Benedict with a team-best 247 kills. Ruetten is second on the team with 139 kills, followed closely by Van Erp with 135 and Elise Amerongen (Lake Elmo, Minn.) with 100.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Schmidt and Clem have shared the setting duties this season. Schmidt owns a team-leading 432 helpers, while Clem has tallied 211. … With her season-high 38 assists vs. Carroll on Sept. 24, Schmidt has posted four matches with 30 or more assists, while recording at least 20 helpers in a match 12 times.
• DIGGING IT: Baab has led the team in digs in 16 of SMU's 21 matches — including a season-high 29-dig effort in SMU's 3-1 win over St. Scholastica on Oct. 1. Baab enters Friday's conference match at Saint Benedict leading the team with 300 digs. … Baab has compiled a total of 1,448 career digs, ranking her fifth all-time — just 15 digs back of Leslie Nichols ''02 for fourth.
• SERVING UP ACES: Schmidt and Clem head into SMU's match against the Eagles as the team's "ace" servers, posting 26 and 25 aces, respectively, followed by McNally (15), Baab (13), Grace Gilles (Apple Valley, Minn. / 12), and Ruetten (11).
• LEAGUE-LEADERS: McNally's 247 kills rank her No. 2 in the MIAC, while her 3.86 kills-per-set rank No. 1. Baab is sitting No. 4 in digs (300).
• STREAK SNAPPERS: With their 3-1 win over St. Scholastica on Oct. 1, the Cardinals put an end to their season-high six-match losing streak. SMU's 3-0 loss to Hamline on Oct. 8, meanwhile, put an end to SMU's two-match winning streak.
• GOING.THE DISTANCE: The Cardinals' 3-2 loss to Carroll on Sept. 24 was their third five-set match of the season. SMU was also extended to a fifth set in beating Carleton and falling to Marian. Saint Mary's is 3-9 in three-set matches, while going 3-3 in matches decided in four sets. |

• FOR THE RECORD: The Bennies enter Friday's home showdown against Saint Mary's sitting at 3-11 overall, including a 1-4 showing in conference play. CSB dropped its fourth match in five conference tries last Saturday, falling to Augsburg 3-0.
• AGAINST THE AUGGIES: Heying and Olivia Thompson both finished with 11 kills, while Audrey Spolidoro had 36 assists to go along with 14 digs, Emma Guest notched eight kills and a season-high 17 digs, and Mary Wenisch also chipped in 16 digs.
• ROUGH START: Saint Benedict's first eight opponents this season were all ranked or received votes in the AVCA Top 25 — including #2 Emory, #7 Hope, #9 University of Chicago, #13 UW-Eau Claire, #18 Washington (Mo.), #18 Northwestern, and Aurora and Cal Lutheran, both of which received votes.
• HOME NOT SO SWEET: Saint Benedict enters this weekend's home contests against Saint Mary's and Carleton still searching for its first win at Claire Lynch Hall. CSB is 0-4 on its home court, while going 3-7 on the road.
• ON THE ATTACK: Haying has been the offensive leader for the Bennies this season, amassing 199 kills, while Sophie Kobienia (99), McKenzie Galvin (79), Thomson (73), and Madelyn Gregory (72) have all recorded at least 72 kills through 14 matches. … Heying has recorded 10 or more kills in 13 of the team's 14 matches, including a season-high 24-kill effort against Hoe on Sept. 4.
• LENDING A HAND: Spolidoro and Payton Marker have been a lethal 1-2 combination in the assist department, combining to record 504 of the team's 586 assists. Spolidoro has dished out 267 helpers, with Marker close behind with 237. … Spolidoro has had 13 matches of 10 or more assists — including three 30+ assist performances. Spolidoro dished out a season-high 37 assists against Macalester on Oct. 8 and followed that up with a 36-assist effort against Augsburg the following evening.
• DOUBLE-DOUBLES: Heying, Spolidoro, and Marker all share the team lead in double-doubles with four each. … Marker recorded season-highs in both assists (29) and digs (23) in CSB's four-set win over Hamline on Sept. 22.

• SERVING UP ACES: The Bennies boast four players with 10 or more service aces this season, including three — Spolidoro, Heying, and Gregory — who share the top spot with 15 aces apiece, one more than Mackenzie McDonald.
• DIGGING IN: Wenisch is the team's leader in digs with 246. She is one of five Bennies who have recorded 100 or more digs this season, being joined by McDonald (154), Marker (116), Spolidoro (115), and Heying (114).
• KEEPING IT CLOSE: Two of the Bennies three wins this season have been 3-1 decisions, while five of Saint Benedict's 11 losses have been decided in four sets. The Bennies have also dropped a pair of five-set matches.
