Cardinals top Blue Devils in overtime

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's hockey team gave a packed house plenty to cheer about Saturday evening, as the Cardinals squared off against UW-Stout in an exhibition game at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.

And Tyson Liverance (Burford, Ontario) made sure the home crowd left happy, as he scored at 1:55 of overtime, lifting the Cardinals to a 3-2 exhibition win over the Blue Devils.

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, the Blue Devils struck first, getting a goal from Riley Enderle nine seconds into the middle frame to take a 1-0 advantage.

The Cardinals answered 10 minutes later, as Nick Kiemel (Colorado Springs, Colo.) found the back of the net on an unassisted tally.

Less than six minutes later, Saint Mary's had its first lead of the game, as Brady Lindauer (Cary, Ill.) scored on the power-play — off assists from Matt Hutton (Carmel, Ind.) and Ryan Stoynich (Calgary, Alberta) — to give SMU a 2-1 edge.

Saint Mary's held that one-goal cushion into the third period, only to have UW-Stout net the game-tying goal five-minutes into the third period on a goal by Dylan Rallis.

The Cardinals officially kick off their 2021-22 season next weekend, traveling to Lake Forest's Alumni Arena in Lake Forest, Ill., for a pair of nonconference games against the Foresters.
