WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's hockey team put on an offensive display in its season-opening exhibition game against Marian Saturday afternoon, getting goals from eight different players en route to a 9-0 victory over the Sabres at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.
Â
Sidney Polzin (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) and
Delaney Calabrese (West Dundee, Ill.) each scored first-period goals to give Saint Mary's a 2-0 lead after the game's opening 20 minutes.
Â
That was just the tip of the iceberg for the Cardinals, who erupted for five second-period goals in pushing their lead to 7-0 heading into the third period.
Â
Jordan Modjeski (South Lyon, Mich.),
Anna Braun (Mantorville, Minn.)
Avrey Simonson (Waupaca, Wis.),
Sydney Green (East Bethel, Minn.), and
Kennedy Kraus (Kasson, Minn.) accounted for the Cardinals' five second-period goals, as SMU dominated the middle period, outshooting the Sabres 23-2.
Â
And the Cardinals weren't finished, getting goals from
Carson Sheridan (Waunakee, Wis.) and Green over the game's final 20 minutes to ice the exhibition victory.
Â
All three Cardinal goalies saw time between the pipes.
Ary Ziakas (Palatine, Ill.) made four saves, while
Jordan Keeley (St. Peter, Minn.) stopped three Sabre shots and
Maddie Wilsey (Little Canada, Minn.) stopped the lone shot she faced. Saint Mary's finished with a 51-8 advantage in shots on goal.
Â
The Cardinals have one more exhibition game on Sunday at St. Olaf, before officially kicking off its 2021-22 season next weekend with a pair of nonconference games against St. Norbert in Ashwaubenon, Wis.
