Cardinals play to 2nd straight 1-1 draw

Story Links

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team found itself playing catch-up from the get-go in last Saturday's conference showdown against Hamline, surrendering the game's first goal just 39 seconds into the opening half.

Fortunately for the Cardinals, Aidan Adamek (Helena, Mont.) would net the equalizer midway through the second half of the team's 1-1 stalemate.

Three days later, the Cardinals were once again thrust into the role of the chaser early on, allowing host Macalester to score in the second minute of the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game.

This time around, however, the Cardinals didn't have to chase for long, tying the game in the 13th minute.

And the two teams would remain deadlocked through the final 77 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime — as Saint Mary's settled for its second consecutive 1-1, double-overtime tie Tuesday evening at Macalester Stadium.

Macalester kicked off the scoring at 2:39 of the first half, as Hans Haenicke rifled a shot past SMU goalkeeper Daniel Sessler (Brookfield, Ill.) to the Scots the early 1-0 lead.

The Scots' early lead did not last long — thanks to SMU's Jacob Clements (Holmen, Wis.).

Clements scored his first goal of the season — and first since netting five goals during his freshman campaign in 2019 — in the 13th minute to knot the game at 1-1.

And, after combining for two goals in less than 14 minutes, neither team would find the back of the net over the final 96+ minutes in settling for the draw.

Sessler made his presence felt in goal for the Cardinals, as the sophomore equaled his career-high with 12 saves, while Macalester goalkeeper Cade Fink stopped two of Saint Mary's three shots on goal.

The Cardinals (0-8-2 MIAC, 3-11-2 overall) close out their regular-season schedule on Saturday, as they welcome UW-Eau Claire to Ochrymowycz Field for a 12:30 p.m. nonconference contest.
