SAINT MARY'S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT |
• FOR THE RECORD: Saint Mary's heads into Wednesday's conference match against St. Olaf sporting a 7-18 overall record — including a 3-6 conference mark.
• LAST ACTION: Despite double-doubles from Ciarra McNally (Lewiston, Minn.) and Mandy Schmidt (Mitchell, S.D.), the Cardinals came up short in their conference match against Macalester last Friday, falling to the Scots 3-2 at the Saint Mary's Gym. SMU dropped its second match of the weekend a day later, falling to No. 23 Bethel 3-0.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Wednesday's match against St. Olaf is the third of four straight home matches for the Cardinals, who played their first 17 contests — and 19 of their first 21 — on the road. SMU closes out the season with a fourth straight home match on Saturday.
• CAREER PERFORMANCES: McNally — who recorded a program-record 32 kills in the Cardinals' 3-2 victory against Carleton on Sept. 15 — notched a career-high 18 digs in the Cardinals' 3-1 win over St. Scholastica on Oct. 1. … McNally's 32 kills against Carleton were not only a career-high, but also a single-match, program record, breaking the previous mark of 31, set by Brandi Blattner on Oct. 21, 2016. … Braidyn Ruetten (Holmen, Wis.) and Pigorsch each turned in career performances against Carroll on Sept. 24., with Ruetten pounded out a career-high 17 kills, while Pigorsch added a career-best 14. … Amerongen posted a career-best 13 kills in the Cardinals' 3-1 win over Westminster (Mo.) on Sept. 17. … Faith Van Erp (Sartell, Minn.) racked up a career-high 19 kills in the Cardinals' 3-2 loss to Marian on Sept. 11.
• DOUBLING UP: Schmidt picked up her team-leading seventh double-double of the season against Macalester last Friday, dishing out 34 assists and adding 13 digs. McNally, meanwhile, posted her sixth double-double of the year against the Scots, finishing with 22 kills and 14 assists. … Clem posted career-highs in both assists (30) and digs (10) en route to her first collegiate double-double against Carleton on Sept. 15.
• ON THE ATTACK: McNally has recorded at least 10 kills 16 times this season — including five matches of 20 of more kills — and enters Wednesday's match against St. Olaf with a team-best 307 kills. Ruetten is second to McNally with 168 kills, followed closely by Van Erp with 162.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Schmidt and Clem have shared the setting duties this season. Schmidt owns a team-leading 527 helpers, while Clem has tallied 245. … With her 34 assists vs. Macalester last Friday, Schmidt has posted five matches with 30 or more assists, while recording at least 20 helpers in a match 14 times.
• DIGGING IT: DeJaye Baab has led the team in digs in 20 of SMU's 25 matches — including a season-high 29-dig effort in SMU's 3-1 win over St. Scholastica on Oct. 1. Baab enters Wednesday's conference match vs. St. Olaf leading the team with 364 digs. … Baab has compiled a total of 1,512 career digs, ranking her third all-time.
• SERVING UP ACES: Clem and Schmidt head into SMU's match against St. Olaf as the team's "ace" servers, with Clem posting 29 aces, two more than Schmidt, followed by McNally (17), Grace Gilles (Apple Valley, Minn. / 15), Baab (15), and Ruetten (12).
• LEAGUE-LEADERS: McNally's 307 kills and 3.87 kills-per-set rank her No. 2 in the MIAC.
• STREAK SNAPPERS: With their 3-1 win over St. Scholastica on Oct. 1, the Cardinals put an end to their season-high six-match losing streak. SMU's 3-0 loss to Hamline on Oct. 8, meanwhile, put an end to SMU's two-match winning streak.
• GOING.THE DISTANCE: The Cardinals' 3-2 loss to Macalester last Friday was their fourth five-set match of the season. SMU was also extended to a fifth set in beating Carleton and falling to Marian and Carroll. Saint Mary's is 3-10 in three-set matches, while going 3-4 in matches decided in four sets. |
ST. OLAF OLES SCOUTING REPORT |
• FOR THE RECORD: The Oles enter Wednesday's road match at Saint Mary's sitting at 11-12 overall, but boast an impressive 6-3 mark in conference play. With two league matches remaining, the Oles find themselves one win away from an MIAC Tournament berth. St. Olaf is currently fourth in the league standings, two games back of conference-leaders Bethel (8-1), Gustavus (8-1), and Hamline (8-1), and two games in front of Augsburg (4-5), Macalester (4-5), Saint Benedict (4-5), and St. Catherine (4-5).
• TURNING THE TABLES: The Oles are coming off a pair of matches decided by 3-0 decisions. St. Olaf fell to Saint Benedict 3-0 last Friday, before bouncing back with a 3-0 victory against Concordia the following afternoon.
• FINAL ROAD TRIP: Wednesday's match at Saint Mary's is the final road match of the regular season for the Oles, who are 3-1 on their home court, while going 8-11 away from Skoglund Center this season.
• ON THE ATTACK: The Oles boast five players with 100 or more kills through 23 matches, including two — Catherine Moore and Madison Gully — who have eclipsed the 200-kill marker. Moore leads the team with 270 kills, while Gully is second with 202. Katelyn Lannom (194), Nicole Banitt (159), and Anysia Caille (127) have also posted 100 or more kills this season. …Moore owns 15 matches with 10 or more kills, including a season-high 20-kill effort against the University of Dubuque on Sept. 11.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Brynne Gray and Waverly Thao have shared the setting duties for the Oles this season, with Gray amassing 509 helpers, followed by Thao with 397. Gray has recorded 10 or more assists in all 23 matches this season — including 14 matches with 20 or more assists. Gray posted a season-high 36 assists against the university of Dubuque on Sept. 17. … Thao, meanwhile, has notched 10 or more assists in all but one match, being held to nine assists against Carthage on Sept. 17.
• DOUBLING UP: Gray has posted a team-high 14 double-doubles, including a season-best 36-assist, 24-dig showing against the University of Dubuque on Sept. 17. Thao owns St. Olaf's other two double-doubles.
• DIGGING IN: Selena Rodriguez has posted a team-leading 389 digs, followed by Gray with 235 and Kylie Reardon with 213. Christina Cheng (195) and Thao (113) have also collected 100 or more digs this season.
• ACED IT: Rodriguez comes into Wednesday's match vs. Saint Mary's owning a team-best 36 service aces, while Reardon (29), Gray (16), Thao (14), Cheng (10), and Banitt (10) also serving up 10 or more aces this season.
• BLOCK PARTY: As a team, St. Olaf has recorded 119 blocks, led by Lannom with 58 and Caille with 40.
• GETTING OUT THE BROOMS: Six of the Oles' 11 wins this season have been 3-0 sweeps. St. Olaf also owns three, four-set victories and a pair of five-setters. On the flip side, the Oles have been swept five times, while also dropping four, four-set decisions and falling in five sets three times.
