WINONA, Minn. — Ninety minutes wasn't enough …
And 100 minutes weren't enough …
It took more than 105 minutes to determine a winner Wednesday evening at Ochrymowycz Field.
And, fortunately for the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team, it was the Cardinals who came away the victor, getting a goal from
Maya Wachter (Dubuque, Iowa) — her first goal in an SMU uniform — with 4:08 remaining in the second overtime to lift Saint Mary's to a 1-0 nonconference victory over UW-River Falls.
The first two halves proved to be a defensive tussle, as both teams struggled to find scoring opportunities.
UW-River Falls had its best chance to get on the scoreboard early on, but Alayna Westerman's penalty kick try just six minutes into the first half slid wide left.
Neither team was able to generate any offense in the second half, either, with both teams combining for just three shot attempts.
The second half proved to be an even tighter defensive battle, with the two teams combining for just three shot attempts.
After failing to convert on a pair of great scoring chances in the first overtime, Saint Mary's finally hit paydirt in the 105th minute, when Wachter took a feed from
Genesis Capacio (Las Vegas, Nev.) and rifled a shot past UW-River Falls goalkeeper Kaylie Krueger to ice the win — the Cardinals' third straight 1-0 victory, and their 10th win in 12 contests this season.
Cardinal goalkeeper
Madison Mora (Honolulu, Hawaii), making her first start of the season, stopped all four shots she faced en route to her first collegiate shutout.
The Cardinals (10-1-1 overall) are back in action on Saturday, as they travel to Minneapolis, Minn., for a 3:30 p.m. conference matchup against Augsburg.
