WINONA, Minn. — After three rather quiet games to kick off her collegiate career, Saint Mary's University's
Allie Urlaub (Burnsville, Minn.) has certainly stepped up her game over the past three contests.
Â
Coming off a goal and an assist in Saint Mary's conference-opening sweep of Concordia last weekend, Urlaub was at it again Friday night — in a big way.
Â
Urlaub extended her point streak to three straight games, accounting for both Saint Mary's goals in leading the Cardinals to a 2-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over Saint Benedict.
Â
The Cardinals struck first — scratch that, Urlaub struck first — as the freshman tallied her second of the season, banging home a
Sydney Green (East Bethel, Minn.) rebound at 8:28 of the opening stanza.
Â
Still clinging to that one-goal advantage, Urlaub would strike again just four minutes into the second period, scoring an unassisted goal to give Saint Mary's a 2-0 advantage.
Â
The Bennies would not go down without a fight, cutting the SMU lead in half on a goal by Corrine Brown with just under eight minutes to play in regulation.
Â
That, however, would be the only puck the Bennies would get past Saint Mary's goalie
Ary Ziakas (Palatine, Ill.), who finished with 22 saves.
Â
The Cardinals (3-0-0 MIAC, 4-2-0 overall) and Bennies will conclude their two-game conference series on Saturday, squaraing off in a 2 p.m. matinee at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.
