  SAINT MARY'S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT
• FOR THE RECORD: Saint Mary's enters Friday's nonconference showdown against UW-Superior sitting at 0-3-0 overall, having dropped a 5-1 decision in their latest game on Wednesday against Lawrence.
• OPENING WEEKEND: Saint Mary's came up short in its season-opening nonconference series against Lake Forest last weekend, falling 4-3 in overtime in the opener last Friday, before dropping a 3-0 decision the following afternoon.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Friday's game against UW-Superior is the second of three straight home games for the Cardinals, who went 3-2 in their five home contests during last season's 11-game, pandemic-shortened season.
• FIRST AS A CARDINAL: Matt Hutton (Carmel, Ind.) netted his first goal in a Saint Mary's jersey to account for Saint Mary's lone goal in Wednesday's 5-1 loss to Lawrence.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Hutton is the fourth different player to score for the Cardinals this season. Tyson Liverance (Burford, Ontario), Ryan Stoynich (Calgary, Alberta), and Bud Winter (St. Louis, Mo.) scored the Cardinals' three goals against Lake Forest last weekend.
• LENDING A HAND: Trevor Wilhelm (St. Louis, Mo.) picked up his team-leading third assist of the season on Hutton's goal against Lawrence on Wednesday. … Wilhelm and Hutton each posted two-assist nights against Lake Forest on Oct. 29, while Jack Hatton (Naperville, Ill.) and Laudon Poellinger (La Crescent, Minn.) also picked up assists vs. the Foresters.
• GOAL NO. 1: Liverance's goal at 13:52 of the first period was the Cardinals' first goal of the 2021-22 season.
• POWER SURGE: All four of the Cardinals' goals this season have been scored on the power play. Saint Mary's is 4-for-17 with the man advantage.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: A.J. Ruskowski (Traverse City, Mich.) enters the weekend with a 3.38 goals-against-average and an.867 save percentage in two appearances (106:33), while Matt Sankner (Pennington, N.J.) has compiled a 3.96 GAA and .889 save percentage in two starts (75:47).
• FIRST CAREER STARTS: Ruskowski and Matt Sankner each made their first collegiate starts in goal for the Cardinals against Lake Forest on Oct. 29-30. Ruskowski finished with 28 saves in SMU's 4-3 overtime loss on Oct. 29, while Sankner kicked out 33 of the 35 Forester shots he faced the following afternoon.
• CLOSE CALLS: With their 4-3, overtime loss to Lake Forest on Oct. 29, the Cardinals have now played 26 games decided by one goal or less — including 15 that have gone into overtime — over the last four seasons.
• QIUCK STARTERS: Saint Mary's has scored two of its four goals this season in the first period. On the flip side, the Cardinals have been outscored 4-1 in the third period and overtime.
• A YEAR AGO: The Cardinals finished 5-6-0 in the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 season. In their last full season in 2019-20, Saint Mary's compiled a 9-14-2 overall mark — including a 6-9-2 effort in the MIAC.
UW-SUPERIOR YELLOWJACKETS SCOUTING REPORT
• FOR THE RECORD: The Yellowjackets kicked off their 2021-22 season in impressive fashion last Saturday, rolling to a 7-0 nonconference win over St. Scholastica.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Friday's game against Saint Mary's is the second of five straight road games for the Yellowjackets, who do not open the home portion of their schedule until welcoming UW-Stevens Point to Wessman Arena on Nov. 20.
• MIAC FOES: UW-Superior's game against Saint Mary's is the second of seven contests against teams from the MIAC. The Yellowjackets are also slated to play St. Olaf, Saint John's, Concordia, and Gustavus, as well as a rematch with MIAC-newcomer St. Scholastica.
• STRIKING FAST: The Yellowjackets scored three goals in less than two minutes early in the first period of last Saturday's 7-0 win over St. Scholastica. UW-Superior finished with four first-period goals against the Saints, while scoring once in the second and twice more in the third.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: Fifteen different players recorded at least one point for UW-Superior in last Saturday's win over St. Scholastica, and four different players had at least two points. MacGregor and Dylan Johnson finished with three points against the Saints, while Artur ?Terchiyev and Coltyn Bates had two-point games.
• SCORING SURGE: ?Terchiyev scored a pair of goals against St. Scholastica last Saturday, while MacGregor Sinclair, Bates, David Kaplan, Chad Lopez, and Bradley Stonnell accounted for the other five goals.
• THE SEASON'S FIRST: Kaplan's tally at 2:39 of the first period last Saturday was the Blugolds' first goal of the season.
• LENDING A HAND: Johnson assisted on three of UW-Superior's seven goals vs. St. Scholastica last Saturday, while Sinclair had a pair of helpers.
• PITCHING A SHUTOUT: Myles Hektor stopped all 26 shots he faced against St. Scholastica last Saturday en route to the shutout. … Hektor started four of the Yellowjackets' 10 games a year ago, compiling a 1.75 goals-against-average and a .940 save percentage.
