NORTHFIELD, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's hockey team took the ice Friday having not played a game since splitting its two-game Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series against Saint Benedict on Nov. 19-20.
And if coach
Sarah Murray was concerned about any post-Thanksgiving rust, the Cardinals put those fears to rest — thanks to some late-game heroics from freshman
Nina Langley (Chaska, Minn.)
Langley scored her first collegiate goal with 3:57 remaining in regulation, lifting the Cardinals to a 2-1 conference win over St. Olaf at the St. Olaf Ice Arena.
After a scoreless first period,
Kas Kingston (Black Diamond, Alberta) put the Cardinals in front, netting her first goal in a Saint Mary's uniform just 3:36 into the middle frame.
St. Olaf would answer at 15:59 of the second period, as Maddie Anderson beat Cardinal goalie
Ary Ziakas (Palatine, Ill.) to even the game at 1-1 heading to the game's final 20-minuite period.
Kingston had so much fun netting goal No. 1 as a Cardinal, the freshman decided to have an hand in Langley's first career goal, as Kingston and
Kennedy Kraus (Kasson, Minn.) picked up the assists on Langley's game-winner.
Ziakas finished with 13 saves in goal for Saint Mary's, while St. Olaf goalie Grace Boswell-Healey kicked out 17 of Saint Mary's 19 shots on goal.
The Cardinals (4-1-0 MIAC, 5-3-0 overall) and Oles will go at it again on Saturday, as the two teams head the Saint Mary's Ice Arena for the 2 p.m. rematch.
