WINONA, Minn. —Â
Ary Ziakas (Palatine, Ill.) was one of four Saint Mary's University women's hockey seniors honored during Senior Day last Saturday — and when the festivities were over, the Cardinal goalie put on a show, stopping all 31 shots she faced in SMU's 4-0 win over Saint Benedict.
Â
That effort highlighted a 101-save week that earned the Cardinal senior her second Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week honor, the league office announced Monday.
Â
Ziakas kicked off a busy week stopping 26 of the 28 shots she faced in Saint Mary's 2-0 loss to Bethel. And, like a fine wine, Ziakas kept getting better with age, kicking out all 31 Saint Benedict shots last Saturday en route to her second shutout of the season and third of her collegiate career.
Â
Wait, there's more.
Â
Ziakas closed out her busy week with another stellar showing in the Cardinals' 3-0 setback against St. Thomas, posting a season-high 44 saves — just 10 shy of her single-game career high.
Â
Ziakas has now appeared in all 10 games for the Cardinals this season — including nine straight starts, and owns a conference-leading .952 save percentage and a 1.56 goals-against-average.
Â
Saint Mary's closes out its 2020-21 season on Tuesday, hosting St. Thomas in a rematch at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena. Opening face-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
