  SAINT MARY'S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT
The Cardinals enter exhibition game at St. Olaf on the heels of an 8-10-0 showing in 2019. … Saint Mary's eight wins were the most in a season since finishing 8-9-1 in 2017. The last time the Cardinals have won nine games in a season was 2000, when they posted a 9-8-1 overall record. … Five of the Cardinals' eight wins a year ago came on their home turf. Saint Mary's finished the year 5-4-0 at home, while going 3-6-0 away from Ochrymowycz Field. … Josh Balsiger (Camas, Wash.) and Eli Szymanski (La Crosse, Wis.) closed out the season sharing the team lead with 10 goals each. … The 10 goals by both Balsiger and Szymanski marked the first time since 1989 that the Cardinals boasted two players with 10 or more goals in the same season. Jared Rasmussen and Doug Freeman each netted 10 goals during that 1989 season. … Saint Mary's had four players post two-goal games last season, led by Szymanski and Balsiger, who did it twice. Szymanski scored twice against Simpson on Sept. 25 and added his first collegiate hat trick against Hamline on Oct. 26, while Balsiger scored twice against Maria on Aug. 30 and again against Martin Luther on Oct. 23. Jacob Clements (Holmen, Wis.) and Garrett Jackson (West Linn, Ore.) also put together two-goal games — both coming against North Central on Sept. 19. … Balsiger closed out his collegiate career tied with Eric Brown (1998-01) for fourth all-time in career goals with 21. … Balsiger also closed out the season leading the team in both assists (5) and points (25). … Balsiger's five-point game against North Central on Sept. 19 was not only a career-best, but also the highest individual total since Andrew Jaworski's five-point effort against Bethany Lutheran in 2014 — and was one point shy of the single-game school record. … One of Szymanski's three goals against Hamline on Oct. 26 came on a penalty kick. The sophomore finished the year a perfect 3-for-3 in PKs. … The goals by Sean Flandrick (New Richmond, Wis.), Wally Barros (Santa Maria da Boa Vista, Brazil), and Zack Bracken (Osseo, Minn.) in Saint Mary's 7-0 win over Martin Luther on Oct. 23 were collegiate firsts. The trio joined Jackson and Armin Jasenac (Brooklyn Center, Minn.) as players who netted their first collegiate goals in 2019. … Clements scored the season's first goal at 7:00 of the first half against Marian on Aug. 30. … The Cardinals used four different goalkeepers in 2019, with the quartet compiling a 2.48 goals-against-average and .648 save percentage. … The Cardinals' 2-1 overtime win over Bethel on Oct. 12 pushed their unbeaten streak against the Royals to five (4-0-1) — while also snapping their season-high three-game losing streak. … Saint Mary's played two overtime games a year ago — beating Augsburg 4-3 on Sept. 28 and Bethel 2-1 on Oct. 12. … The Cardinals' 4-3 win over Augsburg on Sept. 28 was their first victory over the Auggies since Oct. 15, 2005 — a span of 13 games. … The Cardinals' four goals in their 4-3 victory over Augsburg on Sept. 28 were the most in a one-goal win since beating Cal State-East Bay 4-3 on Oct. 28, 2005. …The Cardinals scored a season-high nine goals in their 9-0 rout of North Central on Sept. 19. The nine goals were the most since Saint Mary's scored 11 in an 11-1 win over Presentation during the 2013 season. … Saint Mary's nine-goal outburst against North Central was also the third-highest offensive performance in program history, ranking behind the 10 goals scored vs. Rockford in 2006 and the 11 scored vs. Presentation in 2013. … The Cardinals opened the 2019 season with six straight games decided by shutout. Saint Mary's opened the year with a 5-0 win over Marian, and followed that up with a 4-0 loss to Loras, a 2-0 win over Edgewood, a 1-0 loss to Central-Iowa, a 9-0 win over North Central, and a 2-0 setback at the hands of Gustavus. … The Cardinals held their opponent with a single shot attempt twice last season — vs. Martin Luther on Oct. 23 and vs. Marian on Aug. 30. … Saint Mary's attempted a season-high 45 shots vs. Martin Luther on Oct. 23 — including a season-best 23 shots on goal. … With their 5-0 win over Marian on Aug. 30, the Cardinals have now won their season opener in each of their last five seasons. … The Cardinals' 5-0 win over Marian on Aug. 30 was their fourth straight win over the Sabres — all via shutout.
  ST. OLAF OLES SCOUTING REPORT
The Oles enter their exhibition matchup against Saint Mary's having finished 9-10-0 overall in 2019 — including 5-5-0 in conference play. … The Oles' 2019 season came to a halt in the opening round of the MIAC Tournament, falling to Carleton 2-1. … St. Olaf's appearance in the MIAC Tournament in 2019 was its first since the 2016 season. … Will Douglas and Farid Sani closed out 2019 as the team leaders in goals with six each, while Keith Loukas added three goals, and Lucas Gaulmin, Tomas Gusmao, and Max Eisenfeld all scored twice. … Gaulmin was the team's assist leader with eight, while Douglas led the Oles in points with 14. … Douglas was one of three Oles with 10 or more points in 2019, being joined by Sani with 13 and Gaumin with 12. … Douglas, Sani, and Gusmao all shared the team lead with two game-winning goals each. Gaulmin, Keith Loukas, and Eisenfeld netted the other three. … Hamza Osman started all 19 games in goal for the Oles in 2019, compiling a 1.52 goals-against-average and a .710 save percentage. … Osman finished the year with 71 saves and recorded five shutouts. … St. Olaf and its opponents each closed out 2019 having scored 29 goals — the Oles held a 15-12 advantage in the first half and their opponents owned a 15-12 advantage in the second. … St. Olaf played four overtime games a year ago — beating Wartburg 1-0 in OT and Saint John's 2-1 in double-overtime, while losing to Carleton 2-1 in OT and Concordia 1-0 in two OTs.
