Cardinals lock up MIAC Tournament berth

WINONA, Minn. — Luke Gilbertson (Windom, Minn.) put the Saint Mary's University baseball team in the driver's seat in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference qualifier series against Augsburg with a nine-inning complete-game gem in the Cardinals' 6-1 victory Saturday.

And Ryan Wolfe (Wabasha, Minn.) took the wheel Sunday, driving the Cardinals to a post-season berth with a masterpiece of his own in the second game of the three-game.

Wolfe limited the Auggies to just three hits over seven innings — and the Cardinal offense broke open a one-run game with five runs in the seventh inning — as Saint Mary's locked up a berth in the six-team MIAC Tournament with a 7-1 victory at Max Molock Field.

The Cardinals will open post-season play at home on Wednesday, hosting either Hamline or Concordia — depending on how the Pipers do in their two games against St. Olaf, which are being played at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday, with HU leading the series 1-0.

In eerily similar fashion as Saturday, it took until the fourth inning for the game's first run to be plated — unlike Saturday, however, this time around it was the Cardinals who struck first.

Will Matthews (Geneva, Ill.) got things rolling in the bottom of the fourth with a one-out triple and Andy Tepp (Stevens Point, Wis.) duplicated that feat with a triple of his own to give SMU a 1-0 lead. Liam Belleveau (Middleton, Wis.) was intentionally walked to put runners on the corners, and Cameron Weber (Holmen, Wis.) delivered an RBI single to plate the Cardinals' second run of the inning.

Augsburg, which managed just one hit against Wolfe through sixth innings — a Steven Salz single to lead off the second — got to the senior right-hander in the seventh.  Clint Mattson opened the inning with a seeing-eye single through right side and Connor Stork followed with a walk. Michael Weiss sacrificed the two to second and third, and, one out later, Jack Baumgart singled to score Mattson, and trim SMU's lead to 2-1.

Saint Mary's had an answer to the Auggies' one-run seventh — and then some.

The Cardinals put runners on first and second with one out in their half of the seventh — Joey Costello (Victoria, Minn.) opened with a single and Tyler O'Brien (Belle Plaine, Minn.) was hit by a pitch — and Taylor Anderson (Waukesha, Wis.) launched a double to deep right to score both and push Saint Mary's lead to three, 4-1.

And the Cardinals were just getting warmed up.

Justin Weinberg (Eagan, Minn.) followed Anderson's two-run double with a single to left and Matthews was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. Tepp welcomed Auggie reliever Chase Thomley to Max Molock Field with his second and third RBIs of the contest — belting a two-run double to left — and Belleveau lifted a sacrifice fly to center for the Cardinals' fifth run of the inning — and a 7-1 cushion.

Anderson led the Cardinals' 13-hit offensive attack, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and a pair of RBIs, while Tepp finished 2-for-3 — including a double and a triple — with 3 RBIs. Tepp and Costello also recorded a pair of hits for Saint Mary's.

Wolfe left after seven stellar innings, surrendering just three hits, while walking one and striking out four in improving to 6-3 on the season. James Green (East Bethel, Minn.) tossed a scoreless eighth and Kodey Kiel (Owatonna, Minn.) worked a 1-2-3 ninth to ice the victory.
