FOND DU LAC, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University women's soccer team entered Saturday's nonconference showdown against Marian riding a pair of pretty impressive streaks — three straight wins to open the season, with all three victories coming via shutout.
Make that four consecutive wins — all four via shutout.
Saint Mary's got scoring from four different players, and
Genesis Capacio (Las Vegans, Nev.) picked up a pair of assists, as the Cardinals dominated Marian en route to a 4-0 nonconference win.
Jordyn Matthews (Seattle, Wash.) — coming off a two-goal first half in Monday's 11-0 rout of Martin Luther — got the Cardinals' off and running, scoring her third of the season in the 24th minute.
Brooklyn McKinney (Thornton, Colo.) pushed the Cardinal lead to 2-0 with her team-leading fourth goal of the season with less than four minutes remaining before halftime, as SMU — which held a 12-1 edge in shots, including a 5-0 advantage in shots on goal — took a commanding two-goal lead into the halftime break.
The halftime intermission did nothing to cool off the Cardinals' high-octane offense, as
Haddy Falkman (Waconia, Minn.) netted SMU's third goal of the afternoon just five minutes into the second half to make it a 3-0 advantage.
Fifteen minutes later,
Kassie Arriaga (Chula Vista, Calif.) etched her name in the goal-scoring column, as the senior — who assisted on Matthews' tally — netted her third of the year.
Alexis Nguyen (West Corvina, Calif.) and
Madison Mora (Honolulu, Hawaii) combined on the shutout in goal for the Cardinals. Nguyen made a pair of second-half saves in 73:14, while Mora did not face a shot in 16:46 of relief.
Saint Mary's outshot Marian 11-3 in the second half — including 5-2 in shots on goal — in coasting to win No. 4. For the season, the Cardinals have now outshot 88-8, including 50-5 in shots on goal.
