Cardinals fall in Overtime Heartbreaker
WIINONA, Minn. —‚ Not even a Herculean effort from goalkeeper
Daniel Sessler (Brookfield, Ill.) proved to be enough for the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team Saturday.
Despite Sessler's efforts — which included several saves of the acrobatic variety — the Cardinals came up short against Saint John's, falling to the Johnnies 1-0 in overtime at Ochrymowycz Field.
Â
The scoreboard showed a 0-0 deadlock at the half, but there were plenty of golden offensive opportunities for both teams.
Â
The Cardinals got off five shots in the first half, one of which was an Eli Szyamsnki (La Crosse, Wis.) penalty kick that was thwarted by SJU goalkeeper Even Siefken.
Â
The second half looked similar to the first — with both teams having great offensive chances, but neither able to get one past Sessler or Siefken.
Â
The Johnnies had two picture-perfect opportunities late in the second half, but Sessler was up to the task, making back-to-back diving. Saves in the 79th and 84th minutes to keep the game scoreless — and force overtime.
Â
Saint John's finally broke through in the second minute of OT, as Aidan Becken beat a diving Sessler for the game's only goal.
Â
Sessler finished with four saves for the Cardinals, while Siefken was just as busy between the pipes for the Johnnies, stopping all five Saint Mary's shots on goal.
Â
The Cardinals (0-2-0 MIAC, 3-3-0 overall) are back in action on Wednesday, hosting St. Scholastica in a  4 p.m. contest at Ochrymowycz Field.
