Cardinals, Bennies battle to 0-0 draw

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's soccer team entered Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Saint Benedict sporting a season-opening six-game winning streak — and the Cardinals had yet to allow a single goal.

After 110 minutes against the Bennies, the Cardinals have still not allowed a goal — but that season-opening winning streak has been relabeled an unbeaten streak, as SMU and CSB battled to a 0-0, double-overtime tie at Ochrymowycz Field.

Saint Benedict had the upper hand offensively in the opening 45 minutes, outshooting the Cardinals 5-4, but it was SMU that owned a 3-2 edge in shots on goal. It was more of the same in the second half, as the Cardinals owned a 4-2 shots advantage, with both teams owning one shot on goal.

The Bennies recorded the lone shot on goal in the two overtime periods, but could not find a way to get a shot past SMU goalkeeper Alexis Nguyen (West Corvina, Calif.).

Nguyen was once again her brick-wall self, stopping all four shots she faced en route to her second consecutive shutout and fourth of the season. CSB starting goalkeeper Paige Kahlmeyer made three saves in the opening half, while Annie Waters finished with one save after coming on in relief after the halftime intermission.

The Cardinals (1-0-1 MIAC, 6-0-1 overall) are right back in action on Monday, stepping out of conference play to host UW-Platteville in a 7 p.m. matchup at Ochrymowycz Field.
