SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their final nonconference match of the season against UW-La Crosse sitting at 9-15 overall, including a 2-7 showing in nine conference play.
• LAST ACTION: Mandy Schmidt (Mitchell, S.D.) picked up her 10th double-double of the season with 18 assists and 17 digs — both teams highs — but the Cardinals came up empty in dropping a 3-0 conference decision to Bethel last Saturday in Arden Hills, Minn.
• SWEEPING UP: Six of Saint Mary’s nine wins this season have been 3-0 sweeps, with the other three wins coming in four sets. On the flip side, the Cardinals have been swept six times, while falling three times in four sets and dropping all six five-set matches.
• END OF THE ROAD: Tuesday’s match at UW-La Crosse is the third of five consecutive road contests to close out the Cardinals’ regular-season schedule. After Tuesday, SMU will play at St. Olaf on Friday, and at Gustavus on Saturday. … SMU finished 1-5 in home matches this season, while sitting at 8-9 in road matches.
• ON THE ATTACK: Ciarra McNally (Lewiston, Minn.) heads into Tuesday’s showdown at UW-La Crosse leading the team with 322 kills, followed by Abbie Stigler (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) with 289. Braidyn Ruetten (Holmen, Wis.) is third on the team with 164 kills, while Elise Amerongen (Lake Elmo, Minn.), Faith VanErp (Sartell, Minn.), and Brenna Bruchert (Eau Claire, Wis.) are sitting at 88, 79, and 76 kills, respectively.
• DOUBLE DIGITS: McNally delivered a single-match season-high 28 kills against Grinnell on Sept. 2, and has recorded 10 or more kills 40 times in her collegiate career — including nine matches of 20 or more kills.
• CAREER BESTS: The Cardinals have had two players post career-highs of 10 or more kills this season. Stigler has recorded a career-best 21 kills twice — first against Webster on Sept. 16 and then again against Hamline on Oct. 7, while Bruchert posted 16 kills in the Cardinals’ 3-1 win over Ripon on Sept. 23. … SMU boasts four players who have recorded career-highs of 10 or more digs this season — Peyton Berg (Chatfield, Minn.) put up a career-best 32 digs vs. Saint Benedict on Oct. 14; McNally delivered a career-high 20 digs against Grinnell on Sept. 17; Stigler notched a career-high 19 digs vs. Ripon on Sept. 23, and Larkin Clem (Elk River, Minn.) recorded a career-best 15 digs vs. Buena Vista on Oct 12.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Schmidt and Larkin Clem (Elk River, Minn.) have shared the setting duties this season, with Schmidt owning a team-high 432 assists, followed closely by Clem with 383. … Schmidt has recorded at least 20 assists in a match nine times this season — including a season-high 31 against Knox on Sept. 17 — and has delivered 20 or more helpers 25 times over the past two seasons. … Clem has eclipsed the 20-assist mark seven times this season.
• JOINING THE CLUB: With her third assist against Marian on Sept. 10, Schmidt became the 13th player in program history to reach 1,000 career assists. Schmidt enters Tuesday’s match at UW-La Crosse with 1,341 helpers, ranking her 11th all-time. Rachel Monterastelli ’10 is next up on the all-time assist list, sitting in 10th at 1,471.
• DOUBLING UP: Schmidt recorded her second straight double-double — and 10th of the season — with 18 assists and 17 digs against Bethel last Saturday. … McNally picked up her 14th double-double of the season against Macalester last Wednesday, posting 14 kills and 12 digs, while Stigler and Schmidt also had double-doubles against the Scots — Stigler collecting her seventh double-double with 16 kills and 12 digs, and Schmidt notching double-double No. 9 with 22 assists and 12 digs. … Stigler has delivered a kill-dig double-double in three of the Cardinals’ last four matches. … SMU has had three players record double-doubles in the same match twice three times season.
• DIGGING IT: Berg enters Tuesday’s matchup against UW-La Crosse owning a team-high 406 digs, and has collected 10 or more digs in 14 straight matches — and in 20 of the Cardinals’ 25 contests this season. … McNally is currently second on the team with 270 digs, followed by Schmidt with 215, Stigler with 190, and Clem with 144.
• SERVING UP ACES: Along with her team-leading 406 digs, Berg also leads the team with 42 service aces. VanErp is second with 32, followed by Clem with 24 and McNally with 20. … As a team, Saint Mary’s owns 161 aces through 24 matches.
• AT THE HELM: The 2021 season is the first at the helm for Cardinal coach Amber Zitzow — who picked up her first Saint Mary’s victory with a 3-0 win over Marian on Sept. 2. Zitzow spent the 2021 season as an assistant coach at UM-Morris, after serving 12 seasons at Rochester Community Technical College (RCTC), the first four as an assistant coach and the last eight as the Yellowjackets’ head coach.

• FOR THE RECORD: UW-La Crosse enters its final nonconference match of the season against Saint Mary’s on Tuesday sitting at 11-16 overall, while sporting a 1-5 record in its six WIAC contests.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Eagles split their two nonconference matches in Stevens Point, Wis., last Friday, outlasting Wheaton (Ill.) 3-2, before dropping a 3-0 decision to Illinois Wesleyan.
• STREAKING: After opening the season with seven straight losses — all by 3-0 counts — the Eagles rattled off five consecutive wins and are 11-9 in their last 20 contests. UWL has
• HOME SWEET HOME: Tuesday’s match against Saint Mary’s is the first of back-to-back home contests to close out the regular season for the Eagles, who own a 5-3 record on their home court, while sporting a 6-13 mark away from Mitchell Hall.
• ON THE ATTACK: The Eagles boast three players who have amassed more than 100 kills, led by Brianne Korducki’s 294 kills. xwe Johnson is close behind with 285 kills, while Madison Weisensel is third on the squad with 178. … Korducki has recorded 10 or more kills in 17 of the Eagles’ last 21 contests, while Johnson has also delivered 10+ kills in 17 matches this season.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Megan Adams has been the Eagles’ assist leader this season, compiling 586 helpers through 27 matches, while Jackie Oetterer is second on the team with 260 assists. … Adams has dished out 10 or more assists in 26 of the team’s 27 contests — including each of the last 21. … Adams notched a season-high 39 helpers against Wheaton last Friday.
• DIGGING IT: UW-La Crosse sports six players with 100 or more digs, led by Korducki with 277, Adams with 254, and Summer Schwenn with 227. Sydney Fedderly (190), Ella Luoma (119), and Oetterer (117) have also reached the 100-dig mark.
• DOUBLING UP: Adams has recorded a team-high 12 double-doubles, while Korducki is close behind with 10.
• SERVING UP ACES: UW-La Crosse has posted 141 aces through 27 matches, led by Adams with 30. Adams is one of seven Eagles with 10 or more aces — Korducki (23), Fedderly (18), Luoma (17), Oetterer (14), Keller Frinzi (13), and Schwenn (12) are the others.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Sixteen of UW-La Crosse’s 27 matches have been decided in three sets. The Eagles have picked up six sweeps, while being swept 10 times. UW-L is 3-5 in four-set matches, and 2-1 in five-setters. … UW-L has won the first set in 12 of its 27 matches.
