SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into Saturday’s conference matchup against sitting at 8-10 overall, including 1-3 in conference play.
• LAST ACTION: The Cardinals got double-doubles from both Abbie Stigler (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) and Ciarra McNally (Lewiston, Minn.) en route to a 3-0 sweep over Hamline Friday evening in St. Paul, Minn.
• SWEEPING UP: Including Friday’s win over Hamline, five of Saint Mary’s eight wins this season have been 3-0 sweeps, with the other three wins coming in four sets. On the flip side, the Cardinals have been swept four times, while falling once in four sets and dropping all five five-set matches.
• FINALLY, HOME: After playing 16 of their first 18 matches on the road, the Cardinals’ conference showdown against Carleton is the first of four straight home contest.
• ON THE ATTACK: McNally heads into Saturday’s matchup vs. Carleton leading the team with 234 kills, followed by Abbie Stigler (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) with 200. Braidyn Ruetten (Holmen, Wis.) is third on the team with 118 kills, while Brenna Bruchert (Eau Claire, Wis.) and Elise Amerongen (Lake Elmo, Minn.) are sitting at 69 and 64 kills, respectively.
• DOUBLE DIGITS: McNally delivered a single-match season-high 28 kills against Grinnell on Sept. 2, and has recorded 10 or more kills 35 times in her collegiate career — including seven matches of 20 or more kills.
• CAREER BESTS: The Cardinals have had two players post career-highs of 10 or more kills this season. Stigler has recorded a career-best 21 kills twice — first against Webster on Sept. 16 and then again against Hamline Friday night, while Bruchert posted 16 kills in the Cardinals’ 3-1 win over Ripon on Sept. 23. … Stigler posted a career-high 19 digs against Ripon on Sept. 23, and McNally notched a career-high 20 digs against Grinnell on Sept. 17, while Peyton Berg (Chatfield, Minn.) put up a career-best 28 digs vs. Luther on Wednesday.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Mandy Schmidt (Mitchell, S.D.) and Larkin Clem (Elk River, Minn.) have shared the setting duties this season, with Schmidt owning a team-high 316 assists, followed closely by Clem with 281. … Schmidt has recorded at least 20 assists in a eight seven times this season — including a season-high 31 against Knox on Sept. 17 — and has delivered 20 or more helpers 22 times over the past two seasons.
• JOINING THE CLUB: With her third assist against Marian on Sept. 10, Schmidt became the 13th player in program history to reach 1,000 career assists. Schmidt enters Saturday’s match against Carleton with 1,225 helpers, ranking her 11th all-time. Rachel Monterastelli ’10 is next up on the all-time assist list, sitting in 10th at 1,471.
• DOUBLING UP: McNally picked up her 11th double-double of the season Friday night, posting 13 kills and 16 digs, while Stigler added double-double No. 5 with 21 kills and 13 digs. … SMU boasted three players double-doubles against Luther last Wednesday — McNally (10 kills, 16 digs), Stigler (19 kills, 11 digs), and Schmidt (24 assists, 19 digs). … Schmidt is second on the team with seven double-doubles, followed by Stigler with five and Clem with two.
• DIGGING IT: Payton Berg (Chatfield, Minn.) heads into Saturday’s matchup against Carleton owning a team-high 291 digs, and has collected 10 or more digs in 14 of the Cardinals’ 18 matches this season. … McNally is currently second on the team with 216 digs, followed by Schmidt with 154, Stigler with 128, and Clem with 94.
• SERVING UP ACES: Along with her team-leading 291 digs, Berg also leads the team with 36 service aces. Clem is second on the team with 23 aces, followed by Faith VanErp (Sartell, Minn.) with 22. … As a team, Saint Mary’s owns 138 aces through 18 matches.
• AT THE HELM: The 2021 season is the first at the helm for Cardinal coach Amber Zitzow — who picked up her first Saint Mary’s victory with a 3-0 win over Marian on Sept. 2. Zitzow spent the 2021 season as an assistant coach at UM-Morris, after serving 12 seasons at Rochester Community Technical College (RCTC), the first four as an assistant coach and the last eight as the Yellowjackets’ head coach.
CARLETON KNIGHTS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Knights head into Saturday’s road contest at Saint Mary’s sitting at 4-12 overall and are still searching for their first conference win of the season, having dropped MIAC tilts to St. Scholastica, St. Catherine, Gustavus, Macalester, and Bethel.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Knights struggled to get their offense on track against Bethel Friday evening, failing to score more than 15 points in a set in falling to the Royals 3-0 at Robertson Center Gym in Arden Hills, Minn.
• STREAKING: After opening the season with a 3-0 win over Crown, the Knights dropped its next nine contests, before beating Mount Mary 3-0 on Sept. 24. Carleton is 2-3 since that win over Mount Mary.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Saturday’s match at Saint Mary’s is the second of back-to-back road matches for the Knights, who are 2-3 on their home court, while going 2-8 away from West Gym.
• ON THE ATTACK: The Knights enter Saturday’s matchup with Saint Mary’s boasting three players who have exceeded 100 kills this season — led by Kerrigan Candra, who has amassed 182 kills (3.19 kps). Annalise Sokolow and Jancyn have also eclipsed the 100-kill mark, sitting at 151 and 103 kills, respectively. … Candra has recorded 10 or more kills in a match 12 times, including a season-high 20-kill effort against Crown on Sept. 28.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Isabel Macia has been an assist machine for the Knights, dishing out 516 of the team’s 589 assists this season. … Macia has recorded 15 of more assists in all 16 matches this season — including 10 matches with 30 or more helpers. … Macia delivered a season-high 51 assists against Crown on Sept. 28.
• DIGGING IT: Candra owns the team lead in digs with 153, with Sokolow (148) and Macia (105) also eclipsing the 100-dig plateau. … Candra has posted 10 or more digs in a match eight times, including a season-high 19-dig effort against Nebraska Wesleyan on Sept. 24. … As a team, Carleton owns 747 digs.
• SERVING UP ACES: Carleton has served up 114 aces this season and boasts four players with 10 or more aces. Sokolow leads the way for the Knights with 24 aces, two more than Candra, while Macia owns 20 aces and Sylvia Dixon is fourth with 13.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Two of Carleton’s four wins have been 3-0 sweeps, with the other two victories coming in four sets. On the flip side, the Knights have lost five matches in three sets, four in four sets, and are 0-3 in matches that have been extended to a fifth set.
