SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into Saturday’s conference-opening game at Gustavus sitting at 1-1 overall, having defeated Crown 81-69, while falling to Augustana (Ill.) 81-73.
• LAST TIME OUT: For the second game in a row, the Cardinals put four players in double figures, but this time around, that wasn’t enough, as Augustana (Ill.) held off a furious second-half Saint Mary’s comeback to deal SMU an 81-73 nonconference setback last Saturday at the SMU Gym.
• HOME ON THE ROAD: With their 81-69 win over Crown on Nov. 8, six of the Cardinals’ last nine wins have come on the road. Saint Mary’s finished 5-8 away from the Saint Mary’s Gym a year ago.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Anthony, who scored 10 or more points 17 times last season, has led the team in scoring in each of its first two games — netting 30 against Crown on Nov. 8 and adding 15 vs. Augustana (Ill.). … Anthony is averaging 22.5 ppg through two games, and is shooting 53.6 percent from the field (15-for-28). … Jabari Sawyer (Chicago, Ill.) is averaging 13.5 ppg, while Breyton Buysman (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / 12.5 ppg) and Owen Ziegler (Mount Horeb, Wis. / 10.0 ppg) are also averaging in double figures.
• HITTING DOUBLE DIGITS: Saint Mary’s has put at least three players in double figures in each of its first two games. Anthony (30), Sawyer (17), and Buysman (12) hit double figures against Crown on Nov. 8, while Anthony (15), Buysman (13), Ziegler (12), and Cameron Mallory (Joliet, Ill. / 11) finished in double figures vs. Augustana (Ill.) four days later.
• GREATER THAN 20: Anthony’s 30-point effort against Crown on Nov. 8 marked the 13th time the senior has scored 20 or more points in a game — and was just five off his single-game career-high 35-point showing against St. Scholastica on Dec. 4, 2021.
• CAREER SCORING PERFORMANCES: Saint Mary’s had 10 players record single-game career-highs of 10 or more points last season.
• DOUBLING UP: Anthony has posted double-doubles in each of SMU’s first two games this season. Along with his 30 points, Anthony also delivered 11 rebounds against Crown on Nov. 8, before delivering 15 points and 10 boards vs. Augustana (Ill.) last Saturday. Anthony now owns 12 double-doubles in his four-year collegiate career.
• ON THE GLASS: Anthony leads the team with 21 rebounds with 22 (11 rpg), while Sawyer is second with 12 (6.0 rpg) — with all 12 coming on the defensive end. … SMU has amassed 60 rebounds in two games — including 50 defensive boards. … Anthony led the team in rebounds a year ago with 179 (8.5 rpg). He led or shared the team lead in rebounds in 16 of SMU’s 26 games last season.
• GOING DEEP: Saint Mary’s knocked down a season-high eight 3-pointers against Augustana (Ill.) on Saturday and have now drained 14 treys in two games. … Ziegler — who boasted a team-leading 37 3-pointers a year ago — leads the way for SMU with six treys, followed by Sawyer with four and Buysman with two. … The Cardinals — who recorded 10 or more 3-pointers in a game five times a year ago and closed out the 2021-22 season with 178 3-pointers — are shooting 40.0 from beyond the arc (14-for-35).
• LENDING A HAND: The Cardinals nearly equaled their season high from a year ago with 15 assists against Crown on Nov. 8. SMU posted a season-high 17 helpers against Mary Hardin-Baylor in an 84-64 loss last season. … Anthony leads SMU with 10 assists, three more than Sawyer and two in front of Mallory.
• PERFECT FROM THE LINE: Sawyer was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line against Hamline on Jan. 26, 2022. His 10 free throws were the most since Anthony knocked down 13 of 15 attempts against Augsburg on Feb. 5, 2020. … Sawyer’s effort against the Pipers marked the first time since Michael Burfeind on Jan. 12, 2013 that an SMU player has gone 10-for-10 from the line.
• BIG SECOND HALF: The Cardinals have scored 40 or more points in the second half of each of their first two games — netting 42 against Crown on Nov. 8 and 40 vs. Augustana (Ill.) last Saturday. SMU has netted 40 or more points in a half seven time — with six of those seven 40+ efforts coming in the second half. Last season, Saint Mary’s posted a season-high 47-point half against Bethel on Feb. 5, 2022.
• AS A TEAM: The Cardinals are shooting 43.3 percent from the field (53-for-122), with 14 3-pointers, and are 34-for-43 (79.1 percent) from the free throw line. … Saint Mary’s 81 points against Crown on Nov. 8 were just two shy of its season-high 83-point effort against UW-Superior from a year ago. … The winner of each of SMU’s first two games has scored 81 points — the Cardinals defeated Crown 81-69 and lost to Augustana (Ill.) 81-73.
GUSTAVUS GUSTIES SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Gusties head into Saturday’s conference-opener against Saint Mary’s still searching for their first win of the season, having dropped a 62-58 decision to UW-River Falls on Nov. 11 and an 83-75 decision to Crown last Tuesday.
• LAST TIME OUT: Crown scored the game’s first 12 points — and led by as many as 27 in the first half — as the Polars rolled to an 83-75 win over GAC last Tuesday in St. Bonifacius, Minn.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Saturday’s conference-opener against Saint Mary’s is the first of two straight home game for the Gusties, who play three of their first four contests on their home court. GAC is 0-1 on its home court thus far — falling to UW-River Falls 62-58 in its home-opener on Nov. 11.
• NAILBITERS: Both of Gustavus’ games this season have been decided by eight points or less — a four-point loss to UW-River Falls (62-58) and an eight-point setback at the hands of Crown (83-75).
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Gustavus enters Saturday’s matchup against Saint Mary’s boasting three players who are averaging in double figures in scoring, led by Spencer Swanson, who is averaging 21.5 ppg. Adam Biewen (16.0 ppg) and Jordan Schommer (10.0 ppg) are also averaging in double digits after two games. … Swanson has scored 20 or more points in both games this season — netting 20 points vs. UW-River Falls on Nov. 11 and 23 against Crown last Tuesday.
• DOUBLING UP: Swanson recorded the team’s first double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 boards against UW-River Falls on Nov. 11.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Along with his team-leading 43 points, Swanson also leads the Gusties in rebounds with 19 (9.5 rpg). Biewen is second with 15 (7.5 rpg), followed by Evan Wieker with 13 (6.5 rpg) and Jake Guse with 10 (5.0 rpg).
• RAINING IN 3s: Gustavus has drained 13 3-pointers in two games, led by Swanson and Biewen with four each. Schommer (2), Wieker (1), Cade McGraw (1), and Brady Kienitz (1) have accounted for GAC’s other five 3-pointers.
• LENDING A HAND: Guse leads the Gusties with seven assists, with Biewen adding five helpers and Swanson chipping in four. … GAC has gotten at least one assists from seven of its 10 players who have seen action this season.
• AS A TEAM: Gustavus is shooting 37.1 percent from the field (43-for-116) with 13 3-pointers and are 34 of 47 (72.3 %) from the free throw line. … The Gusties are averaging 66.5 ppg — with a season-high 75-point effort against Crown last Tuesday. GAC’s opponents, meanwhile, are averaging 71.5 ppg. … Gustavus has been outscored by 34 points in the first half (84-50), while holding an 83-61 edge over the game’s final 20 minutes.
