SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:

• FOR THE RECORD: Saint Mary’s heads into its conference rematch against nationally ranked Augsburg on Saturday sitting at 1-5-1 overall, and 1-2-0 in conference play.

• LAST TIME OUT: Matt Sankner (Pennington, N.J.) stopped a career-high 45 shots, but it was not enough, as No.5 Augsburg handed the Cardinals a 4-0 conference setback Friday evening at the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena.

• HOME SWEET HOME: Friday’s game against Augsburg was the fourth straight home game for the Cardinals, who play six of their first seven contests this season on their home.

• CLOSE CALLS: With their 3-2 loss and 2-1 win over Hamline on Nov. 4-5, three of SMU’s seven games this season have been decided by one goal or less — the third a season-opening 5-5 tie against Lake Forest on Oct. 28. 

• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Bud Winter (St. Louis, Mo.), Laudon Poellinger (La Crescent, Minn.), Jack Campion (Crystal, Minn.), and Trevor Schroder (Des Moines, Iowa) all share the team lead with two goals each. Brendan Westbrook (Pine City, Minn.), Callahan Nauss (Maple Plain, Minn.), Warner Young (Newberry, Mich.), Andrew Froese (Traverse City, Mich.), Colin Tushie (Prior Lake, Minn.), and Kasyn Kruse (Luverne, Minn.) own SMU’s other seven goals.

• DOUBLING UP: It took the Cardinals 22 games before they had a player record a two-goal game last season. It took less than two periods this season, as Winter netted two of SMU’s first three goals in SMU’s 5-5 tie vs. Lake Forest on Oct. 28.

• COLLEGIATE FIRSTS: Saint Mary’s has three players who have scored their first goals in a Cardinal uniform this season. Westbrook scored his first SMU goal vs. UW-Stevens Point Friday, while Tushie netted his goal as a Cardinal against Lake Forest on Oct. 29 and Campion delivered his first career goal vs. Hamline on Nov. 5.

• LENDING A HAND: Kellen Tharaldson (Wausau, Wis.) enters Saturday’s rematch against Augsburg with a team-leading four assists, one more than Poellinger and Tushie and two up on Kruse, while Froese, Winter, Nauss, Young, Westbrook, Brady Lindauer (Cary, Ill.), and Gabe Potyk (Lake Orion, Mich.) all have one helper.

• POINT PRODUCERS: Poellinger leads the Cardinals with five points, followed by Tharaldson and Tushie with four, Winter and Kruse with three, and Campion, Froese, Nauss, Schroder, and Young with two each.

• WEEKLY HONORS: After scoring two goals and adding a pair of assists against Lake Forest on Oct. 28-29, Poellinger was named the MIAC Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Oct. 31.

• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Saint Mary’s has used three different goalies through seven games. Sankner has stopped 145 of the 161 shots he’s faced in four appearances en route to a 3.98 GAA and a .901 save percentage, while Connor Close (Des Moines, Iowa) boasts a 5.34 GAA, .831 save % and has made 69 saves in his three starts. A.J. Ruskowski (Traverse City, Mich.) has appeared in two games and owns a boasts a 7.29 GAA and .812 save %. … With his career-high 45-save effort against Augsburg Friday, Sankner has now stopped 30 or more shots eight times in his career — including three times this season. … Close recorded a career-high 36 saves against Lake Forest on Oct. 29.

• PITCHING A SHUTOUT: Sankner kicked out all 31 shots he faced in the Cardinals’ 4-0 win over Bethel on Feb. 19, 2022 en route to his first collegiate shutout. The 4-0 win was also Saint Mary’s first shutout victory of the season.

• BIG OFFENSIVE NIGHT: The Cardinals’ five goals against Lake Forest on Oct. 28 were the most since SMU netted six against Bethel on March 6, 2021.

• WORKING OVERTIME: The Cardinals’ 5-5 tie against Lake Forest on Oct. 28 was their fourth OT contest over the past two seasons.

• SCORING FIRST: Saint Mary’s opponents have scored first in six of the Cardinals’ first seven games. SMU is 0-1-0 when scoring first, while going 1-4-1 when its opponent scores first. … The Cardinals were 6-1-0 when netting the game’s first goal a year ago, while going 2-13-1 when their opponent nets the game’s first goal.

• BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: It was a tale of late-game heroics in SMU’s conference-opening series against Hamline on Nov. 4-5. HU scored two goals in the game’s final 3:33 en route to a 3-2 win over the Cardinals in the first game on Nov. 4, with SMU turning the tables in the rematch, scoring twice in a 33-second span in the final two minutes of regulation en route to a 2-1 victory the following evening.

• BY THE NUMBERS: Saint Mary’s has scored six of its 15 goals in the third period. SMU also owns five first-period goals and three second-period tallies. On the flip side, SMU’s opponents have scored nine goals in the first period, and 12 in both the second and third periods. … Saint Mary’s is 3 of 26 on the power play (11.5 %), while the Cardinals opponents have netted eight power-play goals on 38 attempts (21.1 %).

AUGSBURG AUGGIES SCOUTING REPORT:

• FOR THE RECORD: The Auggies head into the second game of its two-game MIAC series against Saint Mary’s sitting at 4-1-1 overall — the lone loss a 3-2, overtime decision to UW-Stout on Nov. 5.

• LAST TIME OUT: The Auggies scored two goals in the game’s first three minutes and never looked back in dealing Saint Mary’s a 4-0 setback in the first game of the teams’ two-game MIAC series Friday night at the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena.

• QUITE A RUN: The Auggies are coming off a stellar 2021-22 season, finishing 25-5-0 and reaching the NCAA Division III national tournament semifinals, where they fell to top-ranked and eventual national champion Adrian 5-1. … Last year’s appearance marked the third time in program history in which Augsburg reached the national tournament semifinals. … Augsburg’s 25 wins last season were second-most in program history.

• NCAA REMATCH: Augsburg kicked off its 2022-23 season with a rematch against top-ranked Adrian — battling the defending national champs to a 2-2 draw.

• FINDING THEIR GROOVE: After going 0-1-1 to kick off the season — with both games decided in overtime — the Auggies head into their rematch with Saint Mary’s having won four straight, outscoring their opponents 17-4.

• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Nick Woodward and Austin Dollmer lead the Auggies’ high-powered offensive attack with three goals each, one more than Michael Redmon and Gavin Holland. … The Auggies’ 21 goals this season have come from 15 different players. … Augsburg’s four game-winning goals have come from three different players — Redmon, Woodward, and Grant Reichenbacher.

• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Redmon, Woodward, Dylan Schneider, Michael Ferrandino, and Mason Palmer all share the team lead in assists with three each, one more than Reichenbacher, Holland, Weis, Daniel Chladek, and Jarod Blackowiak. 

• POINT PRODUCTION: With his three goals and three assists, Woodward sits atop the team’s points lead with six, one more than Redmon, followed by Holland, Dollmer, Weis, and Schneider with four, and Chladek, Reichenbacher, Ferrandino, Palmer, and Kyler Yeo with three each. 

• DOUBLING UP: Redmon has posted a pair of multiple-point games, scoring twice against UW-Superior on Nov. 8 and recording a two-assist game against Northland on Nov. 12, and has recorded at least one point in each of Augsburg’s last four games. … Holland and Chladek have also posted two-point games this season.

• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Samuel Vyletelka and Jack Robbel have shared the goaltending duties this season. Vyletelka has appeared in all six games (322:54 minutes)— including five starts — compiling a 1.30 goals-against-average and .943 save percentage, while Robbel boasts a 2.76 GAA and .933 save % in one start (43:27 minutes). … Vyletelka has stopped 115 of the 122 shots he’s faced and owns a 4-1-1 record. 

• BY THE NUMBERS: The Auggies hold a commanding 254-152 advantage in shots on goal. Augsburg is averaging 42.3 shots-per-game, compared to 25.3 spg by its opponents. … Augsburg is 5-for-31 on the power play (16.1 %) and has killed off 13 of 15 opponent man advantage opportunities. … Augsburg has outscored its opponents 21-9 — 9-3 in the first period, 7-3 in the second, and 5-2 in the third. … The Auggies lost their lone OT game, a 3-2 loss to UW-Stout on Nov. 5.
