SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals, coming off an 8-17 showing in 2021-22, enter Tuesday’s conference game at Macalester on the heels of an 85-45 loss to Gustavus in the conference- and season-opening game last Saturday.
• LAST TIME OUT: Gustavus used a 13-0 run late in the first quarter to take control and the Gusties never took their foot off the accelerator in dealing the Cardinals an 85-45 conference setback last Saturday at Gus Young Court in St. Peter, Minn.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Tuesday’s game against Macalester is the second straight road game for the Cardinals, who return home for three consecutive home contests, beginning Nov. 30 against St. Olaf. … The Cardinals finished 4-9 on their home floor a year ago, while also owning a 4-9 record away from the Saint Mary’s Gym.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Izzy Goettelman (Winona, Minn.) and Brooklyn Paulson (Holmen, Wis.) led the way for the Cardinals’ offense against Gustavus last Saturday, with Goettelman scoring a team-high 17 points, while Paulson chipped in 15. … Paulson finished the 2021-22 season leading the team — and the conference — in scoring with an 18.2 ppg average. … Paulson has netted 10 or more points 60 times in her collegiate career, including 18 games of 20 or more points.
• CRACKING 20: Paulson closed out her 2021-22 campaign scoring 23 points in the Cardinals’ five-point MAIC Playoff loss to St. Olaf on Feb. 19, 2022. It was the 10th time she eclipsed the 20-point mark last season — including three of the final four games, and four of the last six. … Goettelman was the only other Cardinal with a 20+ point game last season, netting a career-best 22 against St. Scholastica on Jan. 29.
• NIGHT TO REMEMBER: Paulson enjoyed a night to remember against Gustavus on Feb. 2, 2022, scoring a career-high 32 points — the most by a Cardinal since Alexa Huisman netted 32 against Hamline on Jan. 20, 2018. She also became just the second player in program history to net eight 3-pointers in a game, joining Ashley Luehmann, who achieved the feat in against St. Catherine on Jan. 22, 2005.
• JOINING THE CLUB: With her sixth point against Gustavus on Feb. 2, Paulson became the 12th player in program history to score 1,000 career points — and the first since Brandi Blattner ’19 joined the 1,000=point Club in 2017-18. … Paulson is sitting ninth all-time with 1,169 career points. Next up on the list — Jess Miller ’03, who is eighth with 1,203.
• DOUBLING UP: Paulson recorded four double-doubles— including a 25-point, 11-rebound showing vs. St. Olaf on Feb. 7, 2022 — and owns five double-doubles in her collegiate career.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Paulson led the Cardinals with eight rebounds against Gustavus last Saturday. No other Cardinal had more than three boards vs. the Gusties. … Along with her team-leading 18.2 ppg scoring average, Paulson was also the team’s leader in rebounds with 176 (6.8 rpg).
• BIG BOARD NIGHTS: Paulson had a career night against Hamline on Nov. 23, finishing with 12 rebounds, while Goettelman hauled in a career-best 10 boards against Augsburg on Jan. 10, 2022 — missing out on her first collegiate double-double by one point. … Paulson’s career-high 12-rebounds against Hamline on Nov. 23, 2021 were the most in a game since Rachel Kedl recorded 16 boards against Hamline on Jan. 11, 2020.
• RAINING IN 3s: The Cardinals knocked down five 3-pointers against Gustavus last Saturday, led by Goettelman, who accounted for three of SMU’s five treys. Paulson and Ashley Streveler (Colby, Wis.) netted SMU’s other two 3s vs. GAC. … SMU drained a season-high and single-game program record 15 3-pointers against Concordia on Feb. 12, 2022.
• FROM DOWNTOWN: The Cardinals’ school-record 15 3-pointers against Concordia last season marked the fifth time SMU hit 10 or more treys in a game a year ago. … Paulson — who accounted for eight of the team’s nine 3-pointers against Gustavus on Feb. 2 — led the team with 70 3-pointers, while Streveler was second with 41. Streveler hit five 3-pointers en route to her 15 points against Carleton on Jan. 8.
• RECORD-SETTERS: The Cardinals tied the school record for most 3-pointers in a season with 183, joining the 2003-04 at the top of the list. … SMU’s 603 3-point attempts shattered the old mark of 561, set during the 2017-18 season.
• BEST 10 MINUTES: The Cardinals’ 34-point second quarter against Carleton on Jan. 8, 2022 was its highest single-quarter performance since the NCAA went back to the quarter system prior to the 2015-16 season.
• AS A TEAM:The Cardinals shot 31.8 percent from the field (14-for-44, with five 3-pointers against Gustavus last Saturday, and were 12 of 18 (66.7 %) from the free throw line.
MACALESTER SCOTS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Scots enter Tuesday’s conference matchup against Saint Mary’s sitting at 1-3 overall, including an 0-1 mark in conference play. Macalester opened the season with back-to-back losses to Chapman (78-45) and Redlands (79-72, OT), before beating Northwestern (71-59) and dropping a 49-39 decision to Augsburg.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Scots were limited to a combined 14 points over the second and third quarters, and despite outscoring Augsburg 13-4 in the fourth, could not make up the deficit in falling to the Auggies 49-39 in the teams’ MIAC opener last Saturday at Leonard Center in St. Paul, Minn.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Tuesday’s game against Saint Mary’s is the second straight home game for the Scots, who opened the season with three consecutive road contests, and, after Tuesday, close out the 2022 portion of their schedule with four straight road contests.
• NAILBITERS: Two of Macalester’s first four games have been decided by 10 points or less — a seven-point, 79-72 overtime loss to Redlands on Nov. 12 and last Saturday’s 10-point, 49-39 loss to Augsburg.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Peyton Starks enters Tuesday’s showdown against Saint Mary’s averaging a team-high 18.3 ppg. Starks is the only Scot averaging in double figures, with Emma LaFrenz second on the team with an 8.0 ppg scoring average. … Starks has scored 10 or more points in all four games this season, including a season-high 26-point effort against Northwestern on Nov. 16.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: LaFrenz is the team’s rebounding leader through four games, hauling in 39 boards (9.8 rpg), with Starks second with 30 (7.5 rpg). … LaFrenz has posted two season-high 13-rebound efforts this season — first against Redlands on Nov. 12 and then against Augsburg last Saturday. LaFrenz added 10 points to her 13-rebound effort against the Auggies for her first double-double of the season.
• RAINING IN 3s: Macalester has recorded 14 3-pointers through four games, and boast seven players with at least one trey. Andrea Palmen leads the way for Macalester with five 3-pointers, followed by Solana Cushing with three and Starks with two.
• LENDING A HAND: Palmen has dished out a team-best 11 assists, one more than LaFrenz, with Cushing one helper away from joining the duo in assist double figures.
• AS A TEAM: The Scots have gone 96-for-232 (41.4 %) from the field, with 14 3-pointers and are 21 of 31 (67.7 %) from the free throw line. … Macalester is averaging 58.7 ppg, while the Scots’ opponents are scoring at a 66.2 ppg clip. … The Scots have scored more than 70 points twice, netting 71 in beating Northwestern 71-59 on Nov. 16, while scoring a season-high 72 in a 79-72 overtime loss to Redlands on Nov. 12.
