SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into Wednesday’s conference showdown at St. Olaf sitting at 1-3 overall, having defeated Crown 81-69, while falling to Augustana (Ill.) (81-73), Gustavus (74-71), and Macalester (77-76).
• LAST TIME OUT: The Cardinals put four players in double figures — including 22 points from Raheem Anthony (Chicago, Ill.) and 20 points from Breyton Buysman (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) — but came up one point short in falling to Macalester 77-76 at the Saint Mary’s Gym on Nov. 22.
• HOME ON THE ROAD: With their 81-69 win over Crown on Nov. 8, six of the Cardinals’ last nine wins have come on the road. Saint Mary’s finished 5-8 away from the Saint Mary’s Gym a year ago.
• CLOSE CALLS: The Cardinals’ first two conference games have been decided by a combined four points. SMU fell to Gustavus 74-71 on Nov. 19 and dropped a 77-76 decision to Macalester three days later.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Anthony led the Cardinals in scoring for the fourth straight game with his 22-point effort against Macalester on Nov. 22. … Anthony, who has scored 10 or more points 41 times in his four-year collegiate career, is averaging 21.5 ppg through four games, and is shooting 55.2 percent from the field (32-for-58). … Buysman is averaging 14.5 ppg, followed by Owen Ziegler (Mount Horeb, Wis. / 10.0 ppg) and Mallory (9.8 ppg).
• GREATER THAN 20: Anthony’s 22-point effort against Macalester on Nov. 22 marked the 14th time the senior has scored 20 or more points in a game, while his season-high 30-point performance against Crown on Nov. 8 was just five off his single-game career-high 35-point showing against St. Scholastica on Dec. 4, 2021.
• GREATER THAN 20 x 2: With the 22-point showing by Anthony and 20-point effort from Buysman, the Cardinals have had two players score 20 or more points in the same game three times in the last two seasons — with Anthony having a hand in all three.
• HITTING DOUBLE DIGITS: Saint Mary’s has put at least three players in double figures in three of its first four games – including four double-figure scorers twice.
• DOUBLING UP: Anthony has posted double-doubles in three of SMU’s four games this season. Along with his 30 points, Anthony also delivered 11 rebounds against Crown on Nov. 8, before posting 15 points and 10 boards vs. Augustana (Ill.) last Saturday. The senior collected his first points-assist double-double against Gustavus on Nov. 19, scoring 19 points and adding a career-high 10 assists. Anthony was just two rebounds short of his first collegiate triple-double vs. the Gusties. … Anthony now owns 13 double-doubles in his four-year collegiate career.
• ON THE GLASS: Anthony leads the team in rebounds with 38 (9.5 rpg), while Jabari Sawyer (Chicago, Ill.) is second with 18 (4.5 rpg) — with 17 of his 18 coming on the defensive end. … SMU has amassed 112 rebounds in four games — including 93 defensive boards.
• GOING DEEP: Saint Mary’s knocked down a season-high eight 3-pointers against Augustana (Ill.) on Nov. 12 and have now drained 27 treys in four games. … Ziegler — who boasted a team-leading 37 3-pointers a year ago — leads the way for SMU with 12 treys, followed by Buysman with eight. … The Cardinals — who recorded 10 or more 3-pointers in a game five times a year ago and closed out the 2021-22 season with 178 3-pointers — are shooting 40.3 from beyond the arc (27-for-67).
• LENDING A HAND: The Cardinals recorded a season-high 19 assists against Gustavus on Nov. 19 — including a career-high 10 from Anthony. The 10 assists by Anthony were the most by a Cardinal since Evan Pederson put together an 11-assist showing against Macalester on Feb. 14, 2014. … Anthony leads SMU with 22 assists, followed by Sawyer with 12. … SMU’s 19-assist effort against the Gusties were the most in a game since the Cardinals dished out 20 helpers against Augsburg on Feb. 2, 2021
• BIG SECOND HALF: The Cardinals have scored 40 or more points in the second half in — netting 42 against Crown on Nov. 8, 40 vs. Augustana (Ill.) on Nov.12, and a season-high 45 against Macalester on Nov, 22. … SMU has netted 40 or more points in a half eight times over the last two seasons — with seven of those 40+ efforts coming in the second half. Last season, Saint Mary’s posted a season-high 47-point half against Bethel on Feb. 5, 2022.
• AS A TEAM: The Cardinals are shooting 48.1 percent from the field (113-for-235), with 27 3-pointers, and are 48-for-62 (77.4 percent) from the free throw line. … Saint Mary’s 81 points against Crown on Nov. 8 were just two shy of its season-high 83-point effort against UW-Superior from a year ago.
ST. OLAF OLES SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Oles head into Wednesday’s game against Saint Mary’s sitting at 3-1 overall, including sporting a 1-1 record through their first two conference games.
• LAST TIME OUT: St. Olaf suffered its first loss of the season on Nov. 22, as Concordia raced out to a nine-point lead and held the Oles at bay over the game’s final 20 minutes for a 73-61 win in Moorhead, Minn.
• HOME SWEET HOME: St. Olaf enters Wednesday’s home game against Saint Mary’s a perfect 2-0 on its home court, while sitting at 1-1 away from Skoglund Center Gym.
• CONSISTENCY: The winner of each of the Oles’ last three games has scored 73 points. St. Olaf netted 73 in beating both UW-Eau Claire (73-69) and No. 25 Saint John’s (73-62), while Concordia hit the magic 73 number in beating St. Olaf 73-61).
• BALANCED ATTACK: The Oles come into Wednesday’s showdown boasting four players who are averaging in double figures. Nathan Hendler leads the Ole charge with a 14.3 ppg scoring average, percentage points in front of Kobe Kirk, who is second on the team at 14.0 ppg. Connor Martin (12.5 ppg) and Charlie Haff (10.5 ppg) are also averaging 10 or more points through four games. … Martin netted a season-high 23 points against UW-Stevens Point on Nov. 9.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Haff leads the team in rebounds with 34 (8.5 rpg), followed by Hendler with 21 (5.3 rpg), Kirk with 16 (4.0 rpg), and Michael Meriggioli with 14 (3.5 rpg). … Haff hauled in a season-best 17 boards against UW-Eau Claire on Nov. 16.
• RAINING IN 3s: St. Olaf — which drained a season-high seven 3-pointers against UW-Eau Claire on Nov. 16 — has knocked down 21 3-pointers through four games, led by Kirk with seven and Haff with six. … The Oles are shooting 32.8 percent (21-for-64) from behind the arc this season.
• LENDING A HAND: Connor Martin has accounted for 23 of the Oles’ 64 assists through four games, and is the only player with 10 or more helpers through four games.
• AS A TEAM: St. Olaf is shooting 49.5 percent from the field (108-for-218) with 21 3-pointers, and is 46-for-73 (63.0 %) from the free throw line. … The Oles are averaging 70.7 ppg, while holding their opponents to just 66.7 ppg. … St. Olaf netted a season-high 76 points in beating UW-Stevens Point xx-xx on Nov. 9. …
