SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals enter Wednesday’s conference game against St. Olaf on the heels of back-to-back losses to Gustavus (85-45) and Macalester (72-56) in their first two games of the season.
• LAST TIME OUT: Izzy Goettelman (Winona, Minn.) scored 20 points and Katelyn Cruze (Litchfield, Minn.) delivered a double-double, but it was not enough, as Macalester pulled away in the second half in dealing SMU a 72-56 conference setback on Nov. 22 in St. Paul, Minn.
• HOME SWEET HOME: After back-to-back road games to open the season, Wednesday’s contest against St. Olaf is the first of three consecutive home contests for the Cardinals. SMU finished 4-9 on its home floor a year ago, while also owning a 4-9 record away from the Saint Mary’s Gym.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Goettelman led the team in scoring for a second straight game with her 20-point effort against Macalester on Nov. 22. Goettelman was one of three SMU players to reach double figures against the Scots, being joined by Cruze with 11 points and Alyssa Coleman (Matteson, Ill.) with 10. … Goettelman enters Wednesday’s game against St. Olaf averaging 18.5 ppg, while Brooklyn Paulson (Holmen, Wis.) is also averaging in double figures at 11.0 ppg. … Paulson finished the 2021-22 season leading the team — and the conference — in scoring with an 18.2 ppg average. … Paulson has netted 10 or more points 60 times in her collegiate career, including 18 games of 20 or more points.
• CRACKING 20: Goettelman’s 20-point effort against Macalester marked the second time in her collegiate career that the sophomore has scored at least 20 points, and was just two points shy of her career-high 22-point performance against St. Scholastica on Jan. 29, 2022. … Paulson closed out her 2021-22 campaign reaching the 20-point mark 10 times — including three of the final four games, and four of the last six.
• NIGHT TO REMEMBER: Paulson enjoyed a night to remember against Gustavus on Feb. 2, 2022, scoring a career-high 32 points — the most by a Cardinal since Alexa Huisman netted 32 against Hamline on Jan. 20, 2018. She also became just the second player in program history to net eight 3-pointers in a game, joining Ashley Luehmann, who achieved the feat in against St. Catherine on Jan. 22, 2005.
• JOINING THE CLUB: With her sixth point against Gustavus on Feb. 2, Paulson became the 12th player in program history to score 1,000 career points — and the first since Brandi Blattner ’19 joined the 1,000-point Club in 2017-18. … Paulson is sitting ninth all-time with 1,176 career points. Next up on the list — Jess Miller ’03, who is eighth with 1,203.
• DOUBLING UP: Cruze collected the Cardinals’ first double-double of the season — and the first of her collegiate career — against Macalester on Nov. 22, scoring 11 points and adding 10 rebounds. The 11 points and 10 rebounds were both career-highs. … Paulson recorded four double-doubles last season and owns five double-doubles in her collegiate career.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Paulson leads the Cardinals with 13 rebounds (6.5 rpg), followed by Cruze with 10 (5.0 rpg). … Along with her team-leading 18.2 ppg scoring average, Paulson was also the team’s leader in rebounds with 176 (6.8 rpg).
• BIG BOARD NIGHTS: Paulson had a career night against Hamline on Nov. 23, 2021, finishing with 12 rebounds, while Goettelman hauled in a career-best 10 boards against Augsburg on Jan. 10, 2022 — missing out on her first collegiate double-double by one point. … Paulson’s career-high 12-rebounds against Hamline on Nov. 23, 2021 were the most in a game since Rachel Kedl recorded 16 boards against Hamline on Jan. 11, 2020.
• RAINING IN 3s: The Cardinals have knocked down seven 3-pointers through two games — including a season-high five against Gustavus on Nov. 19. … Goettelman has accounted for four of SMU’s seven treys this season, with Ashley Streveler (Colby, Wis.) has two and Paulson owns the other one. … SMU drained a season-high and single-game program record 15 3-pointers against Concordia on Feb. 12, 2022.
• AS A TEAM:The Cardinals are shooting 29.8 percent from the field (34-for-114) with seven 3-pointers and are 26-for-38 (68.4 %) from the free throw line. … SMU is averaging 50.5 ppg, while the Cardinals’ opponents are scoring at a 78.5 ppg clip.
ST. OLAF OLES SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Oles head into Wednesday’s road contest at Saint Mary’s sitting at 3-2 overall, but they are still looking for their first MIAC win, after dropping back-to-back decisions to Saint Benedict and Concordia.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Oles dropped their second straight MIAC contest on Nov. 22, as Concordia outscored STO 50-27 over the game’s final two quarters in rolling to a 95-67 win at Memorial Auditorium in Moorhead, Minn.
• ROAD WARRORS: Wednesday’s game against Saint Mary’s is the second of three straight road games for the Oles, who play five of their first seven games away from Skoglund Center Gym.
• ROLLERCOASTER RIDE: The Oles kicked off their 2022-23 season with three straight wins — beating Alma (69-59), North Park (62-48), and UM-Morris (64-45), before dropping back-to-back games to Saint Benedict (63-59) and Concordia (95-67).
• LEADING THE CHARGE: The Oles boast three players who are averaging in double figures in scoring, led by Rachel Kelly’s 18.4 ppg average. Grace Hegland and Paige Yagodinski are also averaging in double figures at 12.6 ppg and 12.0 ppg, respectively. … Kelly poured in a career-high 27 points in St. Olaf’s loss to Concordia on Nov. 22. It was her second 20+ point performance of the season, having netted 20 against Alma on Nov. 11.
• DOUBLING UP: Kelly owns St. Olaf’s lone double-double of the season, putting together 11 points and 15 rebounds against Saint Benedict on Nov. 19.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Along with her team-leading 18.4 ppg scoring average, Kelly also leads the team in rebounds with 43 (8.6 rpg), one board more than Hegland (42, 8.4 rpg). … Kelly’s 14-rebound effort against Saint Benedict on Nov. 19 was a season-high.
• RAINING IN 3s: St. Olaf has poured in 25 3-pointers through five games, led by Yagodinski with 11. No other Ole has more than four treys. … The Oles are shooting 29.8 percent (25-for-84) from beyond the arc and have gotten at least one 3-pointer from seven different players.
• LENDING A HAND: Cassie Fix and Yagodinski lead the Oles in assists, with Fix dishing out a team-best 15 helpers, followed by Yagodinski with 14. Sophie Olmen is third on the team with eight assists and Kelly owns seven.
• AS A TEAM: St. Olaf is shooting 43.8 percent from the field (124-for-283) with 25 3-pointers and have drained 48 of 81 (59.3 %) of its free throw attempts. … The Oles are averaging 64.2 ppg, while holding their first five opponents to 62.0 ppg. … St. Olaf netted a season-high 69 points in beating Alma 69-59, while Concordia’s 95-point effort in beating STO 95-67 on Nov. 22 are the most points allowed by the Oles this season.
• WORKING OVERTIME: The Oles have played one overtime game this season, getting outscored 7-3 in the extra session in falling to Saint Benedict 63-59 on Nov. 19.
