SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: Saint Mary’s heads into its conference-opening weekend sitting at 0-1-1 overall, having battled Lake Forest to a 5-5 tie in last Friday’s season-opener, before falling 6-3 in the rematch the following afternoon.
• LAST TIME OUT: Saint Mary’s erupted for five goals — including two from Bud Winter (St. Louis, Mo.) in a 5-5 tie with Lake Forest last Friday, while surrendering four unanswered goals in dropping the second game of the nonconference series 6-3 the next day.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Friday’s game at Hamline is the lone road game among Saint Mary’s first seven opponents. SMU opened the year with two games against Lake Forest and will face Hamline, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Superior, and Augsburg, before returning to the road for the second game of its two-game MIAC series against Augsburg on Nov. 18.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Winter netted two goals in last Friday’s 5-5 tie with Lake Forest, while Laudon Poellinger (La Crescent, Minn.) had goals in both games vs. the Foresters. Andrew Froese (Traverse City, Mich.), Trevor Schroder (Des Moines, Iowa), Colin Tushie (Prior Lake, Minn.), and Kasyn Kruse (Luverne, Minn.) accounted for SMU’s other four goals vs. Lake Forest last weekend. …
• DOUBLING UP: It took the Cardinals 22 games before they had a player record a two-goal game last season. It took less than two periods this season, as Winter netted two of SMU’s first three goals in Friday’s 5-5 tie vs. Lake Forest.
• COLLEGIATE FIRSTS: Tushie’s first-period goal against Lake Forest last Saturday was the first of his collegiate career. The freshman also posted his first career two-assist performance in Friday’s 5-5 tie with the Foresters.
• LENDING A HAND: Tushie and Kellen Tharaldson (Wausau, Wis.) head into the weekend series against Hamline with a team-leading three assists, one more than Poellinger, while Kruse, Froese, and Callahan Nauss (Maple Plain, Minn.) all have one helper.
• POINT PRODUCERS: Poellinger and Tushie sit atop the team’s points lead with four, followed by Tharaldson with three, and Winter, Froese, and Kruse with two each.
• WEEKLY HONORS: After scoring two goals and adding a pair of assists against Lake Forest last weekend, Poellinger was named the MIAC Offensive Player of the Weke, the league office announced on Monday.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Matt Sankner (Pennington, N.J.) and Connor Close (Des Moines, Iowa) both started one game against Lake Forest last weekend. Sankner, who closed out his freshman campaign boasting a 2.83 goals-against-average and .910 save percentage in 15 appearances (752:15), made 34 saves against the Foresters last Friday, while Close did Sankner two better, kicking out 36 Forester shots in Saturday’s rematch. … Sankner has now stopped 30 or more shots six times in his career — including a career-best 35 saves twice. … Close’s 36-save effort was a career high, three saves more than his previous career-best, a 33-save effort against Bethel on Feb. 2, 2021.
• PITCHING A SHUTOUT: Sankner kicked out all 31 shots he faced in the Cardinals’ 4-0 win over Bethel on Feb. 19, 2022 en route to his first collegiate shutout. The 4-0 win was also Saint Mary’s first shutout victory of the season.
• BIG OFFENSIVE NIGHT: The Cardinals’ five goals against Lake Forest last Friday were the most since SMU netted six against Bethel on March 6, 2021.
• WORKING OVERTIME: The Cardinals’ 5-5 tie against Lake Forest last Friday was their fourth OT contest over the past two seasons.
HAMLINE PIPERS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Pipers head into their conference-opening series on the heels of a 4-0 loss to UW-River Falls in their season-opener last Friday.
• LAST TIME OUT: UW-River Falls erupted for three first-period goals, as Hamline never recovered, as the Pipers fell to the Falcons 4-0 in a nonconference season-opening game at W.H. Hunt Arena in River Falls, Wis.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Friday night’s game against Saint Mary’s is the home-opener for the Pipers, who finished 3-10-2 on their home ice last season. Beginning with Friday’s game vs. Saint Mary’s, HU will play three of its next four contests on its home sheet at TRIA Rink, the lone exception, Saturday’s rematch with the Cardinals at the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena.
• A YEAR AGO: Hamline is coming off a 4-18-4 showing a year ago, including a 1-10-3 mark in conference play. Hamline closed out the season going 0-3-3 in its last six games, including a 4-3 loss to Gustavus in the MIAC Playoffs. HU has not won since beating UW-Stout 4-2 on Feb. 9, 2022.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Brendan Sheehan and Jackson Wille closed out the 2021-22 season sharing the team lead in goals with seven, one more than Joe Collins and two in front of both Carson Simon and Jackson Bond. … Collins posted two, two-goal games last season, while Sheehan, Wille, and Tyler Nyman all scored two goals in a game once. … Wille, Bond, Bailey Sommers, and Ike Taraszewski netted HU’s four game-winning goals.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Sheehan finished last season with a team-leading nine assists, while Collins and Simon each chipped in seven helpers, and Sommers, Andrew Erwin, and Erik Dahl added six each.
• POINT PRODUCTION: Hamline ended last season with four players boasting double-digit point totals. Sheehan led the way with 16 points, followed by Collins with 13, Simon with 12, and Sommers with 10.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Kevin Lake made 29 saves in the Pipers’ season-opening loss to UW-River Falls last Friday. … The Pipers used four different goalies a year ago, led by Lake, who started 22 of the team’s 26 games, compiling a 3.45 goals-against-average and an .885 save percentage. … Lake finished with 562 saves, recorded a pair of shutouts, and was in goal for all four of HU’s wins last season. … While posted a season-high 39-save effort against Concordia on Feb. 20, 2022.
• BY THE NUMBERS: UW-River Falls held a 33-17 shots on goal advantage last Friday, and scored three of its four goals in the game’s opening period. … Hamline was outscored 102-58 last season — including 37-13 in the first period. … HU played six overtime games last season, finishing 0-2-4 in those six contests. … Hamline scored a season-high five goals in a game three times last season — vs. St. Scholastica on Dec. 4, vs. St. Olaf on Feb. 5, and vs. Gustavus on Feb. 12. On the flip side, HU surrendered a season-high nine goals in 9-0 loss to UW-Stevens Point on Jan. 9.
