SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR RECORD: The Cardinals head into their third straight nonconference game on Friday against UW-River Falls still searching for their first win of 2022-23, falling twice to Lake Forest last weekend.
• LAST TIME OUT: Lake Forest scored the game’s final two goals — one early in the second period and the other late in the third — in dealing the Cardinals a 4-2, season-opening loss last Friday, before completing the sweep by scoring with less than 40 seconds remaining in overtime to beat SMU 3-2.
• CLOSE CALLS CONTINUE: With their 4-2 and 3-2 losses to Lake Forest last weekend, 18 of SMU’s last 26 games have been decided by two goals or less — including 11 of their last 13 wins.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Friday’s game against UW-River Falls is the home opener for the Cardinals, who finished 6-5-2 on their home ice a year ago. … SMU plays
• WORKING OVERTIME: Last Saturday’s 3-2 loss to Lake Forest was the Cardinals’ first overtime game of the season. Saint Mary’s played four overtime games a year ago, finishing 1-1-2 in those four contests.
• TOUGH STRETCH: The Cardinals will face a pair of nationally ranked teams this weekend, hosting seventh-ranked UW-River Falls on Friday, before traveling to No. 5 UW-Eau Claire on Saturday.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Kas Kingston (Black Diamond, Alberta) picked up a goal in both of SMU’s games against Lake Forest last weekend — including the game-tying goal with 37 seconds remaining in regulation in last Saturday’s 3-2 overtime loss — while Anna Braun (Mantorville, Minn.) and Taryn Dornself (Somerset, Wis.) netted SMU’s other two goals vs. the Foresters.
• FIRST AS A CARDINAL: Dornself’s first-period goal last Saturday was her first as a Cardinal. Saint Mary’s had 10 players net their first collegiate goals a year ago.
• LENDING A HAND: Sidney Polzin (Chippewa Falls, S.D.) assisted on two of SMU’s four goals against Lake Forest last weekend, while Ella Ausman (Chippewa Falls, Wis.), Ellie Hegdahl (Brookings, S.D.), Abigail Painovich (Hinckley, Minn.), Sydney Green (East Bethel, Minn.), and Leah Parker (Hudson, Wis.) had single assists against the Foresters.
Polzin, Sydney Green (East Bethel, Minn.), and Ella Ausman (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) picked up SMU’s three assists vs. the Foresters on Friday.
• POINT PRODUCERS: Kingston and Polzin share the team lead with two points, while Braun, Dornself, Ausman, Green, Hegdahl, Painovich, and Parker have one point each.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Jordan Keeley (St. James, Minn.) and Celeste Rimstad (Richfield, Minn.) each made a start in goal against the Foresters last weekend. Keeley, who compiled a 2.33 GAA and .920 save % a year ago, stopped 31 of the 35 shots she faced against Lake Forest last Friday — including making 12 saves in both the first and third periods — while Rimstad stopped 18 of the 21 shots she faced on Saturday. … Keeley kicked out a career-high 44 Concordia shots in SMU’s 3-1 win over the Cobbers on Nov. 13, 2021. … Last Saturday’s 18-save effort marked the first collegiate start for Rimstad.
• SHUTTING THEM OUT: Keeley’s 19 save effort in SMU’s 0-0 tie against Bethel on Feb. 19, 2022 was her third collegiate shutout, having posted a pair of shutouts during her freshman season.
• FIRST-GOAL DISADVANTAGE: Despite scoring the game’s first goal in both contests, Saint Mary’s dropped both games against Lake Forest last weekend. A year ago, the team that scored first won 21 of the Cardinals’ 25 games.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Two of the Cardinals’ four goals against Lake Forest last weekend came on the power play. … SMU has scored two of its four goals in the first period, while adding single goals in the second and third. On the flip side, the Cardinals’ opponents have scored once in the first period, three times in the second, twice in the third and once in OT.
UW-RIVER FALLS FALCONS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: UW-River Falls heads into first road contest of the season still searching for its first win, having dropped a 4-3 decision to Augsburg in its season-opener last Saturday.
• LAST TIME OUT: Augsburg erased a 2-0 first-period deficit, scoring four unanswered goals, and held off a late UW-River Falls surge to deal the Falcons a 4-3 nonconference setback last Saturday at Hunt Arena in River Falls, Wis.
• NATIONAL ATTENTION: UW-River Falls heads into Friday’s road contest against Saint Mary’s sitting at No. 7 in the latest USCHO.com Top 10.
• WHAT A RUN: The Falcons closed out 2021-22 with a near-perfect 27-2-0 overall record, including an 8-1-0 showing in WIAC play. … UW-River Falls breezed to the WIAC O’Brien Cup — and the WIAC’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament — with a sweep of UW-Superior (6-0, 6-0) in the semifinals and a 6-3 win over No. 5 UW-Eau Claire in the title game. … In the NCAAs, the Falcons opened with a 7-0 rout of Aurora, before falling to Gustavus 5-3 in the quarterfinals.
• STREAKING: UW-River Falls opened the season with seven straight wins a year ago, before falling 2-0 to No. 3 UW-Eau Claire. Following that loss to the Blugolds, UWRF rattled off 20 consecutive victories, before falling to Gustavus in the NCAA quarterfinals.
• AGAINST THE MIAC: UW-River Falls — which went 11-0-0 against Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents a year ago — once again has 11 contests against MIAC foes this season. Along with Augsburg and Saint Mary’s, the Falcons also have three games against No. 2 Gustavus, two vs. Concordia and St. Scholastica, and singles games against St. Olaf, and Saint Benedict on their slate.
• RARE HOME LOSS: Last Saturday’s loss to Augsburg was just the second in the last 17 home games for the Falcons, who went 15-1-0 on their home ice a year ago, while going 12-1-0 away from Hunt Arena.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: UW-River Falls’ three goals against Augsburg last Saturday came from three different players — Bailey Olson, Emma Schmitz, and Kailey Niccum. … Callie Hoff scored a team-leading 26 goals a year ago. She was one of seven Falcons with 10 or more goals in 2021-22.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Olson and Schmitz each collected two assists against the Auggies, while Kaitlyn Ronn and Jessica Rubenalt accounted for the Falcons’ other two helpers. … Hoff dished out a team-best 41 assists a year ago, four more than Abigail Stow.
• POINT PRODUCTION: Olson and Schmitz had a hand in all three UW-River Falls goals last Saturday against Augsburg and are sitting atop the team’s points lead with three, one more than Niccum, Ronn, and Rubenalt. … UW-River Falls closed out the 2021-22 season with six players recording 20 or more points — led by Hoff with 67.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Jordan O’Connor and Sami Miller both saw action in goal for UW-River Falls against Augsburg last Saturday. O’Connor stopped nine of the 13 shots she faced in 40:22 minutes of work, while Miller stopped all four shots she faced in 19:16 minutes of relief. … Miller started 18 of the team’s 29 games last season, compiling a 1.45 goals-against-average and .930 save percentage, while O’Connor made seven appearances — including six starts — and closed out the year with a 1.67 GAA and .898 save %.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Augsburg’s four goals in last Saturday’s 4-3 win over the Falcons, marked just the fourth time in the last 30 games that UW-RF has allowed four or more goals in a game. … UW-River Falls outscored its opponents 42-5 during its season-opening seven-game winning streak a year ago. Four of those five goals came in a 5-4 overtime win over Augsburg on Nov. 4. … The Falcons posted 14 shutout wins in 2021-22. … UW-River Falls netted six or more goals in a game 16 times last season, including a season-high 14-goal outburst in routing Northland 14-0 on Jan. 28, 2022.
