SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals enter Saturday’s conference game at Concordia sitting at 2-3 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Cardinals were outscored 47-32 in the game’s first three quarters — including managing just six third-quarter points — as St. Catherine dealt SMU a 59-46 conference setback Wednesday evening at the Saint Mary’s Gym.
• HOME SWEET HOME: After back-to-back road games to open the season, Wednesday’s contest against St. Catherine was the third of four home games in a five-game span for the Cardinals — the lone exception, Saturday’s matchup at Concordia. SMU will play its final game before the Christmas holiday next Wednesday, hosting UW-Stevens Point. … SMU — which finished 4-9 on its home floor a year ago — is 2-0 in its first two home contests this season.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Brooklyn Paulson (Holmen, Wis.) scored a team-high 12 points and Katelyn Cruze (Litchfield, Minn.) added 10 in Wednesday’s loss to St. Catherine. … Paulson, who leads the team with a 13.0 ppg scoring average, has netted 10 or more points 63 times in her collegiate career, including 19 games of 20 or more points. … Izzy Goettelman (Winona, Minn.) is also averaging in double figures at 11.0 ppg, while Alyssa Coleman (Matteson, Ill.) and Cruze are sitting at 8.8 ppg and 8.0 ppg, respectively.
• CRACKING 20: Saint Mary’s has had a player score 20 or more points twice this season. Goettelman tossed in 20 points against Macalester on Nov. 22 and Paulson delivered 21 vs. St. Olaf on Nov. 30. … Goettelman’s 20-point effort against Macalester marked the second time in her collegiate career that the sophomore has scored at least 20 points, and was just two points shy of her career-high 22-point performance against St. Scholastica on Jan. 29, 2022.
• CLIMBING THE LADDER: Paulson, who recorded her 1,000th career point against Gustavus on Feb. 2, 2022, is sitting eighth all-time with 1,219 career points. Next up on the list — Vicki Wilson ’96, who is seventh with 1,256.
• ALONE AT THE TOP: With her two 3-pointers against St. Catherine on Wednesday, Paulson surpassed Ashley Luehmann ’06 as the all-time career-leader in 3-pointers made with 208. The senior also holds the career mark for 3-pointers attempted at 589.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: Saint Mary’s got at least three points from 10 of the 11 players who took the court against Carleton last Saturday. … SMU put four players in double figures for the first time this season against Carleton last Saturday — Coleman netted a team-high 17 points, followed by Ashley Streveler (Colby, Wis.) with 15, Goettelman with 11, and Paulson with 10.
• CAREER HIGH: Coleman’s 17-point showing against Carleton last Saturday was a career high. She is the first SMU player to record a single-game career-high of 10 or more points this season.
• DOUBLING UP: Katelyn Cruze (Litchfield, Minn.) collected the Cardinals’ first double-double of the season — and the first of her collegiate career — against Macalester on Nov. 22, scoring 11 points and adding 10 rebounds. The 11 points and 10 rebounds were both career-highs. … Paulson recorded four double-doubles last season and owns five double-doubles in her collegiate career.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Paulson leads the Cardinals with 37 rebounds (7.4 rpg), followed by Goettelman (26, 5.2 rpg) and Cruze (25, 5.0 rpg). … Thirty-three of Paulson’s 37 rebounds through five games have come on the defensive end, while 12 of Cruze’s 25 have been offensive boards.
• FROM BEYOND THE ARC: The Cardinals poured in 12 3-pointers in their 81-67 win over Carleton last Saturday — equaling the 12 treys they had netted through their first three games of the season combined. … SMU’s 12 3-pointers against Carleton last Wednesday were just three shy of the single-game program record of 15, set against Concordia on Feb. 12, 2022. … Paulson and Streveler share the team lead in 3-pointers with eight, two more than Goettelman.
• LENDING A HAND: Streveler boasts a team-high 17 assists, two more than Paulson. The duo have combined for 32 of SMU’s 54 helpers through five games. … SMU has gotten at least one helper from 11 of the 13 players who have seen playing time this season.
• COMEBACK FOR THE AGES: Saint Mary’s overcame its largest fourth-quarter deficit since the NCAA switched from halves to quarters prior to the 2015-16 season against St. Olaf on Dec. 2, rallying from 19 points down to beat the Oles 62-60.
• BY THE NUMBERS:The Cardinals are shooting 35.3 percent from the field (102-for-289), with 28 3-pointers, and are 58-for-83 (69.9 %) from the free throw line. … SMU is averaging 58.0 ppg, while the Cardinals’ opponents are scoring at a 68.6 ppg clip. … The Cardinals’ 81 points in last Saturday’s 81-67 win over Carleton were a season-high, and the most since scoring 85 points against those same Knights in an 85-58 win in the teams’ first meeting a year ago.
CONCORDIA COBBERS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cobbers enter their conference showdown against Saint Mary’s sitting at 4-2 overall, including sporting a 3-2 mark through the first five games of the MIAC season.
• LAST TIME OUT: Concordia scored just seven points in the fourth quarter, as Augsburg rallied from a 44-38 deficit to deal the Cobbers a 56-51 conference setback Wednesday at Si Melby Hall in Minneapolis, Minn.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Wednesday’s game at Augsburg was the second straight road game for the Cobbers, who are in the midst of playing four of five contests on the road — the lone exception, Saturday’s home contest against Saint Mary’s. … CC has yet to lose on its home floor this season, going 3-0, while sporting a 1-2 mark away from Memorial Auditorium this season.
• NAILBITERS: Concordia’s last three games have all been decided by seven points or less. CC defeated Gustavus 64-63 on Nov. 26, before falling to Bethel (55-48) and Augsburg (56-51) in its last two games.
• ROLLERCOASTER RIDE: After opening the season with four consecutive wins – including victories over St. Olaf and Gustavus in their first two conference contests — the Cobbers enter Saturday’s matchup against Saint Mary’s having dropped two straight.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Carlee Sieben went 5-for-13 from the field— all 3-pointers — and was 9 of 10 from the free throw line in scoring 24 points against Augsburg on Wednesday.
• SCORING PARADE: The Cobbers boast three players who are averaging in double figures in scoring through six games, led by Sieben with a 15.3 ppg average. Emily Beseman and Makayla Anderson are also averaging in double figures at 13.5 ppg and 11.8 ppg, respectively. … Sieben has scored 20 or more points twice this season – including a single-game season-high 27-point effort against UM-Morris on Nov.9.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Anderson has hauled in a team-leading 58 rebounds (9.7 rpg) and has collected 10 or more boards in three of CC’s first six games. … Beseman is second on the team with 29 boards (4.8 rpg), followed by Symone Beld with 24 (4.0 rpg). … Anderson — who has led the team in rebounding in all six games this season – hauled in a season-high 14 rebounds against Augsburg on Wednesday.
• RAINING IN 3s: Concordia has tossed in 40 3-pointers through six games, led by Sieben with 19. Sieben is 19 of 41 (46.3 %) from beyond the arc this season. … CC has gotten at least one 3-pointer from seven different players.
• LENDING A HAND: Sieben has dished out a team-high 21 assists. She is one of three Cobbers with at least 10 helpers this season, being joined by Beseman with 16 and Anderson with 11.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Concordia is shooting 41.1 percent from the field (147-for-358, with 40 3-pointers, and are 86-for-109 (78.9 %) from the free throw line. … The Cobbers are averaging 70.0 ppg, while their opponents are scoring at a 58.2 ppg clip. … Concordia has scored 80 or more points twice this season — netting 85 in beating UM-Morris 85-60 on Nov. 9, while adding a season-high 95 in routing St. Olaf 95-67 on Nov. 22. … CC has dominated the first three quarters — outscoring its opponents 116-85 in the first, 109-77 in the second, and 103-83 in the third — but have been outscored 104-92 over the game’s final 10 minutes.
