SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into Wednesday’s nonconference showdown at UW-La Crosse sitting at 2-5 overall, including a 2-4 showing after five conference games.
• LAST TIME OUT: Raheem Anthony (Chicago, Ill.) poured in a game-high 28 points, but it was not enough, as Concordia outscored SMU 46-37 over the game’s final 20 minutes in dealing Saint Mary’s an 82-77 conference setback last Saturday in Moorhead, Minn.
• HOME ON THE ROAD: The Cardinals’ 85-66 win over Carleton on Dec. 3 was their first home win of the season. The Cardinals — who have posted six of their last 10 wins on the road, are 1-2 on their home court, while also going 1-3 away from the Saint Mary’s Gym.
• CLOSE CALLS: The Cardinals’ five-point, 82-77 loss to Concordia last Saturday was its fourth conference game decided by six points or less. SMU has also dropped decisions to Gustavus (74-71), Macalester by one (77-76) and St. Olaf (75-69).
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Anthony has led the Cardinals in scoring in five of their first seven games. … Anthony, who has scored 10 or more points in all seven contests this season, and 44 times in his four-year collegiate career, is averaging a team-leading 22.5 ppg through seven games, and is shooting 54.2 percent from the field (58-for-107).
• PLENTY OF OFFENSIVE WEAPONS: Along with Anthony, Owen Ziegler (Mount Horeb, Wis.) and Breyton Buysman (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) are also averaging in double figures, sitting at 16.3 ppg and 12.7 ppg, respectively.
• GREATER THAN 20: Saint Mary’s has had a player score 20 or more points in five of its seven games this season — including Anthony’s 28-point showing against Concordia last Saturday. … Anthony’s 28-point effort against Concordia marked the 16th time the senior has scored 20 or more points in a game, while his season-high 30-point performance against Crown on Nov. 8 was just five off his single-game career-high 35-point showing against St. Scholastica on Dec. 4, 2021.
• GREATER THAN 20 x 2: With the 30-point showing by Ziegler and 25-point effort by Anthony against Carleton on Dec. 3, the Cardinals have had two players score 20 or more points in the same game twice this season and four times in the last two seasons — with Anthony having a hand in all four.
• GREATER THAN 30 x 2: With Ziegler’s 30-point showing against Carleton on Dec. 3, Saint Mary’s has had a player score 30 points in a game twice this season. Anthony netted 30 against Crown on Nov. 8.
• CAREER NIGHTS: After scoring a then-career high 26 points against St. Olaf on Nov. 30, Ziegler improved that mark by four against Carleton on Dec. 3, pouring in 30 points against the Knights. … Anthony dished out a career-high 10 assists against Gustavus on Nov. 19.
• HITTING DOUBLE DIGITS: Saint Mary’s has put at least three players in double figures in six of its first seven games – including four double-figure scorers three times.
• DOUBLING UP: Anthony has posted double-doubles in four of SMU’s seven games this season. … Anthony collected his first points/assist double-double against Gustavus on Nov. 19, scoring 19 points and adding a career-high 10 assists. Anthony was just two rebounds short of his first collegiate triple-double vs. the Gusties. … Anthony now owns 14 double-doubles in his four-year collegiate career.
• ON THE GLASS: Anthony leads the team in rebounds with 61 (8.7 rpg), while Jabari Sawyer (Chicago, Ill.) is second with 30 (4.3 rpg) — with 26 of his 30 coming on the defensive end. … SMU has amassed 215 rebounds in seven games — including 166 defensive boards.
• GOING DEEP: Saint Mary’s equaled the program’s single-game record with 14 3-pointers against Carleton on Dec. 3, and followed that up with 13 3-pointers against Concordia last Saturday. … Ziegler netted a single-game program record eight 3-pointers for the second straight game against Carleton, going 8-for-14 from beyond the arc. The junior was 8-for-13 in first setting the school record against St. Olaf on Nov. 30. … Ziegler — who boasted a team-leading 37 3-pointers a year ago — leads the way for SMU with 31 treys, followed by Buysman with 13. … Anthony matched his single-game career-high with four 3-pointers against Concordia last Saturday – all in the first half. … The Cardinals have knocked down 63 3-pointers this season and are shooting 44.1 percent from beyond the arc (63-for-143).
• LENDING A HAND: The Cardinals recorded a season-high 19 assists against Gustavus on Nov. 19 — including a career-high 10 from Anthony. The 10 assists by Anthony were the most by a Cardinal since Evan Pederson put together an 11-assist showing against Macalester on Feb. 14, 2014. … Anthony leads SMU with 41 assists, followed by Sawyer with 18. … SMU’s 19-assist effort against the Gusties were the most in a game since the Cardinals dished out 20 helpers against Augsburg on Feb. 2, 2021
• BIG HALF: The Cardinals have scored 40 or more points in a half in four of their seven games — including 40+ in both halves against Carleton last Saturday. … SMU has netted 40 or more points in a half 10 times over the last two seasons — with eight of those 40+ efforts coming in the second half. Last season, Saint Mary’s posted a season-high 47-point half against Bethel on Feb. 5, 2022.
• BY THE NUMBERS: The Cardinals are shooting 46.6 percent from the field (199-for-427), with 63 3-pointers, and are 71-for-95 (74.7 %) from the free throw line. … SMU went 5-for-5 from the free throw line against Carleton on Dec. 3 — and did not attempt a first-half free throw. … Saint Mary’s 85 points against Carleton on Dec. 3 were a season high, and the second time this season the Cardinals have eclipsed the 80-point mark, having netted 81 in beating Crown 81-69 on Nov. 8. … SMU’s 85 points against Carleton on Dec. 3 were the most since SMU netted 87 against Hamline on Jan. 11, 2020.
UW-LA CROSSE EAGLES SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: UW-La Crosse heads into Wednesday’s nonconference matchup against Saint Mary’s sitting at 9-1 overall, while a perfect 2-0 in their first two WIAC contests this season.
• LAST TIME OUT: Staring at a nine-point halftime deficit, the Eagles outscored Trine 35-29 over the final 20 minutes, but came up just short, falling to the Thunder 67-64 last Saturday in La Crosse, Wis.
• HOME SWEET HOME: The Eagles’ three-point loss to Trine last Saturday was its first of the season, snapping UW-L’s season-opening nine-game winning streak. UW-L is now 3-1 on its home court, while going 6-0 away from Mitchell Hall.
• TAKING A TUMBLE: With their loss to Trine last Saturday, UW-La Crosse fell from No. 3 to No. 7 in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Craig Steele and Austin Westra led the Eagles in scoring in last Saturday’s loss to Trine, each netting 16 points. … Westra and Ethan Anderson have each led or shared the team lead in scoring in five of UW-L’s nine games.
• NOT-SO-AVERAGE: The Eagles come into Wednesday’s mid-week showdown with Saint Mary’s boasting three players who are averaging in double figures in scoring, led by Anderson at 17.3 ppg. Westra and Steele will take the court against the Cardinals owning 15.3 ppg and 10.7 ppg scoring averages. … UW-L has had a player score 20 or more points in a game nine times — including 29 points from Anderson and 20 from Westra against UW-Eau Claire on Dec. 3.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Westra owns the team lead in rebounds with 55 (5.5 rpg), one more than Anderson (54, 5.4 rpg), while Torin Hannah is third on the team with 45 boards (4.5 rpg). … Anderson, Hannah and Mack Severt have all recorded single-game season-high nine-rebound performances this season.
• RAINING IN 3s: The Eagles have knocked down 85 3-pointers in 10 games, and boasts four players with 10 or more treys — led by Henry Noone with 18 and Steele with 17. Anderson and Hannah have each chipped in 11 3-pointers. … All 18 of Noone’s made field goals this season have come from behind the 3-point line. … As a team, UW-La Crosse has netted a single-game season-high 12 3-pointers twice — against Guilford on Nov. 12 and vs. UW-Whitewater on Nov. 30.
• LENDING A HAND: Anderson and Westra have each dished out a team-leading 30 assists, followed by Will Fuhrmann with 19, Hannah with 15, and Steele with 14.
• BY THE NUMBERS: UW-La Crosse is shooting 48.8 percent from the field (290-for-594), with 85 3-pointers, and has gone 121-for-157 (77.1 %) from the free throw line. … UW-L is shooting 38.6 percent from the 3-point line (85-for-220). … The Eagles are averaging 78.6 ppg, while holding their opponents to just 66.3 ppg. … UW-La Crosse has scored 80 or more points five times this season, including a season-high 88-point showing in beating UW-Whitewater on Nov. 30.
