SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals enter Wednesday’s nonconference home game against UW-Stevens Point sitting at 2-4 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Cardinals grabbed a two-point, 38-36 lead at halftime, but the Cobbers outscored SMU 21-5 in the third quarter and never looked back, dealing Saint Mary’s an 83-65 conference setback last Saturday in Moorhead, Minn.
• HOME SWEET HOME: After back-to-back road games to open the season, Wednesday’s contest against UW-Stevens Point is fourth home game in a five-game span for the Cardinals — the lone exception, last Saturday’s matchup at Concordia. … SMU — which finished 4-9 on its home floor a year ago — is 1-2 in its three home games, while sitting at 1-3 away from the Saint Mary’s Gym.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: With her team-leading 15 points against Concordia last Saturday, Brooklyn Paulson (Holmen, Wis.) has now led the team in scoring in back-to-back games and three times in SMU’s first six contests. … Paulson, who leads the team with a 13.3 ppg scoring average, has netted 10 or more points 64 times in her collegiate career, including 19 games of 20 or more points. … Izzy Goettelman (Winona, Minn.) is also averaging in double figures at 11.3 ppg, while Alyssa Coleman (Matteson, Ill.) and Katelyn Cruze (Litchfield, Minn.) are sitting at 8.3 ppg and 8.0 ppg, respectively.
• CRACKING 20: Saint Mary’s has had a player score 20 or more points twice this season. Goettelman tossed in 20 points against Macalester on Nov. 22 and Paulson delivered 21 vs. St. Olaf on Nov. 30. … Goettelman’s 20-point effort against Macalester marked the second time in her collegiate career that the sophomore has scored at least 20 points, and was just two points shy of her career-high 22-point performance against St. Scholastica on Jan. 29, 2022.
• CLIMBING THE LADDER: Paulson, who recorded her 1,000th career point against Gustavus on Feb. 2, 2022, is sitting eighth all-time with 1,219 career points. Next up on the list — Vicki Wilson ’96, who is seventh with 1,256.
• ALONE AT THE TOP: With her two 3-pointers against St. Catherine on Dec. 7, Paulson surpassed Ashley Luehmann ’06 as the all-time career-leader in 3-pointers made. Paulson heads into Wednesday’s matchup against UW-Stevens Point with 209 career 3-pointers. The senior also holds the career mark for 3-pointers attempted at 598.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: Saint Mary’s got at least three points from 10 of the 11 players who took the court against Carleton on Dec. 3. … SMU put four players in double figures for the first time this season against Carleton on Dec. 3 — Coleman netted a team-high 17 points, followed by Ashley Streveler (Colby, Wis.) with 15, Goettelman with 11, and Paulson with 10.
• CAREER HIGH: Coleman’s 17-point showing against Carleton on Dec. 3 was a career high. She is the first SMU player to record a single-game career-high of 10 or more points this season.
• DOUBLING UP: Katelyn Cruze (Litchfield, Minn.) collected the Cardinals’ first double-double of the season — and the first of her collegiate career — against Macalester on Nov. 22, scoring 11 points and adding 10 rebounds. The 11 points and 10 rebounds were both career-highs. … Paulson recorded four double-doubles last season and owns five double-doubles in her collegiate career.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Paulson leads the Cardinals with 46 rebounds (7.7 rpg), followed by Goettelman and Cruze with 29 rebounds each (4.8 rpg). … Thirty-eight of Paulson’s 46 rebounds through six games have come on the defensive end, while 15 of Cruze’s 29 have been offensive boards.
• FROM BEYOND THE ARC: The Cardinals poured in 12 3-pointers in their 81-67 win over Carleton on Dec. 3 — equaling the 12 treys they had netted through their first three games of the season combined. … SMU’s 12 3-pointers against Carleton on Dec. 3 were just three shy of the single-game program record of 15, set against Concordia on Feb. 12, 2022. … Paulson and Streveler share the team lead in 3-pointers with nine, one more than Goettelman. … As a team, SMU has drained 35 treys this season.
• LENDING A HAND: Streveler boasts a team-high 19 assists, four more than Paulson. The duo have combined for 34 of SMU’s 60 helpers through six games. … SMU has gotten at least one helper from 11 of the 13 players who have seen playing time this season.
• COMEBACK FOR THE AGES: Saint Mary’s overcame its largest fourth-quarter deficit since the NCAA switched from halves to quarters prior to the 2015-16 season against St. Olaf on Dec. 2, rallying from 19 points down to beat the Oles 62-60.
• BY THE NUMBERS:The Cardinals are shooting 35.9 percent from the field (125-for-348), with 35 3-pointers, and are 70-for-100 (70.0 %) from the free throw line. … SMU is averaging 59.2 ppg, while the Cardinals’ opponents are scoring at a 71.0 ppg clip. … The Cardinals’ 81 points in their 81-67 win over Carleton on Dec. 3 were a season-high, and the most since scoring 85 points against those same Knights in an 85-58 win in the teams’ first meeting a year ago.
UW-STEVENS POINT SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Pointers head into their mid-week nonconference contest at Saint Mary’s sitting at 7-2 overall, including boasting a 1-1 showing through two WIAC contests.
• LAST TIME OUT: UW-Stevens Point has been off since last Wednesday, when the Pointers used a 22-7 second-quarter performance to pull away in dealing Luther a 63-52 nonconference setback in Decorah, Iowa.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Wednesday’s game against Saint Mary’s is the second straight road game for the Pointers, who have played just three of their first nine games away from Shirley Egner Court at Berg Gym. UW-Stevens Point is sitting at 4-2 on its home court, while sporting a perfect 3-0 mark on the road.
• STREAKING ALONG: The Pointers have not lost back-to-back games all season. UW-Stevens Point opened the season with three straight wins, before dropping a 55-50 decision to St. Norbert on Nov. 16. UW-Stevens Point then wrapped back-to-back two-game win streaks around their only other loss, a 64-58 setback vs. UW-Stout on Nov. 30.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Alexa Thomson scored 14 points to lead four players in double figures in last Wednesday’s victory over Luther. Gabby Gawlitta (14), Kelly McIntyre (10), and Emily Mortenson (10) also reach 10 or more points against the Norse. … Thomson leads the team in scoring with a 12.6 scoring average, while Gawlitta and Jamie Pfeifer are also averaging in double figures at 12.0 ppg and 11.1 ppg, respectively. … Thomson’s 22-point effort against UW-Platteville on Dec. 3 are a season-high.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Along with her team-leading 12.6 ppg scoring average, Thomson also leads the Pointers in rebounds with 72 (8.0 rpg). Gawlitta is second with 62 boards (6.9 rpg), followed by Pfeifer with 51 (5.7 rpg). … Pfeifer hauled in a single-game season-high 13 rebounds against Lakeland on Nov. 22.
• DOUBLING UP: Thomson has collected a pair of double-doubles this season — posting 17 points and 10 rebounds against Millikin on Nov. 11, and adding scoring 22 points and 11 rebounds against UW-Platteville on Dec. 3. … Gawlitta also boasts a pair of double-doubles this season, with 13 points and 10 rebounds against Millikin on Nov. 11 and a 10-point, 10-rebound effort against Carroll the following day. … Pfeifer boasts UWSP’s only other double-double, a 10-point, 13-rebound showing against Lakeland on Nov. 22.
• FROM DOWNTOWN: The Pointers have tossed in 30 3-pointers through nine games, led by Thomson with 11. … UW-Stevens Point has had nine players record at least one 3-pointer this season.
• LENDING A HAND: Josie Nies has dished out a team-leading 44 assists. She is one of three Pointers with at least 20 helpers through nine games, being joined by Courtney Krueger with 23 and Thomson with 22.
• BY THE NUMBERS: The Pointers are shooting 41.3 percent from the field (227-for-550), with 30 3-pointers, while going 113-for-157 (72.0 %) from the free throw line. … UWSP is averaging 66.3 ppg, while its opponents are scoring at a 53.4 ppg clip. … UW-Stevens Point has outscored its opponents in each of the first three quarters — 144-119 in the first, 149-102 in the second, and 159-113 in the third — but have been outscored 147-145 in the fourth. … UW-Stevens Point has scored 80 or more points in a game twice, including a season-high 91-point effort in routing Northland 91-47 on Nov. 8.
