SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals enter the second day of the Music City Classic against MIT sitting at 2-6 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
• LAST TIME OUT: Penn State Behrend outscored the Cardinals 23-17 in the fourth quarter, breaking a 48-48 tie, and leading the Lions to a 71-65 win over Saint Mary's Thursday morning during the opening day of the Music City Classic in Gallatin, Tenn.
• HOME SWEET HOME: After back-to-back road games to open the season, the Cardinals have played four of their last six games on their home court. … SMU — which finished 4-9 on its home floor a year ago — is 2-2 in its four home games, while sitting at 0-4 away from the Saint Mary’s Gym.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Brooklyn Paulson (Holmen, Wis.) scored a team-high 23 points and Katelyn Cruze (Litchfield, Minn.) chipped in 10 in the Cardinals’ six-point loss to Penn State Behrend on Thursday. … Paulson’s 23-point effort marks the second straight game in which SMU’s leading scorer netted 23 points — Izzy Goettelman (Winona, Minn.) delivered a career-high 23 points in SMU’s 81-79 OT loss to UW-Stevens Point on Dec. 14. … Either Goettelman or Paulson has led the team in scoring in seven of their first eight games.
• CARRYING THE LOAD: Paulson heads into Friday’s Music City Classic matchup against MIT leading the team in scoring with a 15.1 ppg average, while Goettelman is also averaging in double figures at 11.4 ppg. … Paulson has netted 10 or more points in seven of SMU’s eight games this season and 66 times in her collegiate career — including 20 games of 20 or more points.
• CRACKING 20: Saint Mary’s has had a player score 20 or more points four times this season — twice by both Paulson and Goettelman. Goettelman tossed in 20 points against Macalester on Nov. 22 and added 23 against UW-Stevens Point on Dec. 14, while Paulson delivered 21 vs. St. Olaf on Nov. 30 and 23 against Penn State Behrend on Thursday. … Goettelman has now scored at least 20 points three times in her collegiate career.
• CLIMBING THE LADDER: Paulson, who recorded her 1,000th career point against Gustavus on Feb. 2, 2022, is sitting seventh all-time with 1,260 career points. Next up on the list — Kim Gleason ’89, who is sixth with 1,283 and Ashley Luehmann ’06, who is fifth at 1,438.
• ALONE AT THE TOP: With her two 3-pointers against St. Catherine on Dec. 7, Paulson surpassed Ashley Luehmann ’06 as the all-time career-leader in 3-pointers made. Paulson heads into Friday’s Music City Classic game against MIT with 216 career 3-pointers. The senior also holds the career mark for 3-pointers attempted at 609.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: Saint Mary’s got at least three points from 10 of the 11 players who took the court against Carleton on Dec. 3. … SMU put four players in double figures for the first time this season against Carleton on Dec. 3 — Coleman netted a team-high 17 points, followed by Ashley Streveler (Colby, Wis.) with 15, Goettelman with 11, and Paulson with 10.
• CAREER HIGH: Along with Goettelman’s career-high 23-point effort against UW-Stevens Point on Dec. 14, Hartjes’ 10-point showing vs. the Pointers was also a career-best. The two are the second and third SMU players to post career-high scoring nights of 10 or more points this season, being joined by Allysa Coleman (Matteson, Ill.), who delivered a career-high 17 points against Carleton on Dec. 3.
• DOUBLING UP: Katelyn Cruze (Litchfield, Minn.) collected the Cardinals’ first double-double of the season — and the first of her collegiate career — against Macalester on Nov. 22, scoring 11 points and adding 10 rebounds. The 11 points and 10 rebounds were both career-highs. … Paulson recorded four double-doubles last season and owns five double-doubles in her collegiate career.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Paulson leads the Cardinals with 56 rebounds (7.0 rpg), followed by Cruze (43. 5.4 rpg) and Goettelman (39, 4.9 rpg). … Fifth-two of Paulson’s 56 rebounds through eight games have come on the defensive end, while 24 of Cruze’s 43 have been offensivÂe boards.
• FROM BEYOND THE ARC: The Cardinals poured in 12 3-pointers in their 81-67 win over Carleton on Dec. 3 — equaling the 12 treys they had netted through their first three games of the season combined. … SMU’s 12 3-pointers against Carleton on Dec. 3 were just three shy of the single-game program record of 15, set against Concordia on Feb. 12, 2022. … Paulson leads the team with 16 3-pointers, five more than Ashley Streveler (Colby, Wis.) and seven in front of Goettelman. … As a team, SMU has drained 52 treys this season.
• LENDING A HAND: Streveler boasts a team-high 26 assists, six more than Paulson, while Goettelman has chipped in 15 helpers. The trio have combined for 61 of SMU’s 91 assists through eight games. … Paulson and Goettelman have each recorded a season-high seven-assist game this season — Paulson against Carleton on Dec. 4 and Goettelman vs. UW-Stevens Point on Dec. 14.
• COMEBACK FOR THE AGES: Saint Mary’s overcame its largest fourth-quarter deficit since the NCAA switched from halves to quarters prior to the 2015-16 season against St. Olaf on Dec. 2, rallying from 19 points down to beat the Oles 62-60.
• WORKING OVERTIME: The Cardinals’ 81-79 loss to UW-Stevens Point on Dec. 14 was its first overtime game of the season. The Cardinals played just one overtime game a year ago, falling to Hamline 75-71 on Nov. 23, 2021. The Cardinals played a single-season, program-record four overtime games during the 2019-20 season, including three that were decided by two points.
• BY THE NUMBERS:The Cardinals are shooting 37.8 percent from the field (176-for-466), with 52 3-pointers, and are 95-for-131 (72.5 %) from the free throw line. … SMU is averaging 62.4 ppg, while the Cardinals’ opponents are scoring at a 72.2 ppg clip. … The Cardinals’ 81 points in their 81-67 win over Carleton on Dec. 3 were a season-high, and the most since scoring 85 points against those same Knights in an 85-58 win in the teams’ first meeting a year ago
PENN STATE BEHREND LIONS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Lions enter the second day of the Music City Classic sporting an 8-2 overall record. Behrend will kick off Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) play on Jan. 4 against Mount Aloysius.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Lions broke a 48-48 deadlock, outscoring Saint Mary's 23-17 in the fourth quarter in dealing the Cardinals a 71-65 setback Thursday morning during the opening game of the Music City Classic in Gallatin, Tenn.
• ON ROLL: After opening the season 1-2 — beating Otterbein (80-67) and falling to Carnegie Mellon (68-64) and Marietta (76-68) — the Lions have rattled off seven straight wins.
• ROAD SWEET ROAD: The games against Saint Mary’s and Framingham State are the second and third straight road games for Behrend. The Lions have played five of their first 10 games on the road this season — and have yet to lose away from their home court in the Junker Center, going 5-0.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Rachel Majewski has been the Lions’ offensive leader, averaging 21.8 ppg through nine games. Majewski has poured in 20 or more points seven times and has scored in double figures in all nine games. … The sophomore delivered a single-game, season-high 28-point showing against Fredonia on Nov. 22.
• PLENTY OF OPTIONS: Behrend’s heads into the Music City Classic boasting three players who are averaging in double figures in scoring. Along with Majewski’s 21.8 ppg scoring average, Boyer is averaging 16.1 ppg and Morgan Altavilla is sitting at 15.9 ppg. … Boyer and Altavilla have each scored 10 or more points in eight of the team’s nine games. … Altavilla has recorded 20- and 26-point showings in two of the Lions’ last three games, while Boyer boasts three, season-high 21-point efforts this season.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Boyer is the team’s rebounding leader through nine games, hauling in 59 boards (6.6 rpg), with Brianna Dean (57, 6.3 rpg) and Alexis Furyes (56, 6.2 rpg). … As a team, the Lions have collected 358 rebounds (39.8 rpg) — 118 offensive boards and 240 on the defensive end.
• DOUBLING UP: The Lions have had a player record a double-double three times this season. Boyer has accounted for two of the three, with Dean owning the other.
• RAINING IN 3s: Behrend has knocked down 61 3-pointers and is shooting 37.9 % from beyond the arc (61-for-161). … Boyer leads the Lions’ long-range brigade with 22 3-pointers, followed by Majewski with 17 and Altavilla with 11. The trio have accounted for 50 of Behrend’s 61 treys this season.
• LENDING A HAND: Dean has dished out a team-leading 37 assists and is one of five Behrend players with 10 or more helpers this season, being joined by Boyer (26), Altavilla (20), Majewski (19), and Furyes (12).
• BLOCK PARTY: Furyes has accounted for 18 of the Lions’ 30 blocks through nine games.
• STEALING THE SHOW:Behrend has amassed a whopping 130 steals in nine contests, and boasts five players with 10 or more steals — Altavilla (23), Furyes (16), Dean (15), Boyer (15), and Majewski (14).
• WORKING OVERTIME: Behrend has played one overtime game this season, outscoring Oberlin 17-6 in the extra session en route to an 86-75 win on Dec. 3.
• BY THE NUMBERS: As a team, Behrend is shooting 41.9 % from the field (253-for-604) with 61 3-pointers, and are 124-for-187 (66.3 %) from the free throw line. … The Lions are averaging 76.8 ppg, while holding their opponents to a 68.1 ppg scoring clip. … Behrend has outscored its opponents 691-613 — including 178-168 in the second quarter, 175-129 in the third, 181-146 in the fourth, and 17-6 in OT. • FOR THE RECORD: MIT heads into Friday's Music City Classic game against Saint Mary's sitting at 5-5 overall. The Engineers do not open NEWMAC play until Jan. 14 against Smith College.
• LAST TIME OUT: MIT outscored Meredith 24-14 in the third quarter en route to a 54-39 win during Thursday's opening game of the Music City Classic in Gallatin, Tenn.
• HOME (OR ROAD) SWEET HOME: MIT has posted two wins on its home court, while winning three times on the road. For the season, MIT is 2-3 at home, while going 2-2 away from Rockwell Cage.
• NAILBITERS: Three of MIT’s five wins have been decided by 10 points or less — including a pair of overtime victories. The Engineers own a 10-point, 71-61 victory over Westfield State; an 82-77 win over Worcester State; and a 71-67 triumph against Brandeis.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Paula Pieper scored a career-high 26 points to pace the Engineers in their 86-74 loss to No. 13 Tufts on Dec. 10. … MIT enters the Music City Classic boasting three players who are averaging in double figures, led by Kamsi Nwogu’s 14.1 ppg scoring average. • CLEANING THE GLASS: Brianna Lebrun and Nowgu have dominated the boards for MIT this season, with Lebrun hauling down a team-leading 74 boards (8.2 rpg), one more than Nwogu’s 73 (8.1 rpg). … Lebrun has pulled down 14 rebounds twice this season — vs. Westfield State on Nov. 15 and against Worcester State on Dec. 1.
• DOUBLING UP: Nwogu has collected a pair of double-doubles — 18 points and 11 rebounds vs. Sufolk on Nov. 21, and 25 points and 12 boards vs. Brandeis on Dec. 3, while Lebrun equaled her single-game season-high with 14 rebounds in an 18-point, 14-rebound showing against Worcester State on Dec. 1.
• BEYOND THE ARC: MIT has netted 32 3-pointers through nine games, led by Pieper with 13. Sarah Berman is second on the team with eight treys, followed by Choi with four and Kaya Weiser with three.
• LENDING A HAND: Pieper has dished out a team-leading 32 assists through nine games, followed by Choi with 24 and Berman with 16. … As a team, has recorded 106 helpers and have gotten at least two assists from all 12 players.
• STEALING THE SHOW: MIT boasts five players with 10 or more steals this season, led by Choi with 20 and Pieper with 17. Lebrun (15), Nwogu (13), and Berman (11) have also recorded double-digits in steals this season.
