SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into Saturday’s conference showdown against Carleton sitting at 1-4 overall, having defeated Crown 81-69, while falling to Augustana (Ill.) (81-73), Gustavus (74-71), Macalester (77-76), and St. Olaf (75-69).
• LAST TIME OUT: Owen Ziegler (Mount Horeb, Wis.) poured in a career-high 26 points, but it was not enough, as SMU dropped a 75-69 conference decision to St. Olaf Wednesday evening in Northfield, Minn.
• HOME ON THE ROAD: With their 81-69 win over Crown on Nov. 8, six of the Cardinals’ last nine wins have come on the road. Saint Mary’s finished 5-8 away from the Saint Mary’s Gym a year ago.
• CLOSE CALLS: The Cardinals’ first three conference games have been decided by a combined 10 points. SMU fell to Gustavus by three, 74-71, on Nov. 19; dropped a one-point, 77-76 decision to Macalester on Nov. 22, and lost to St. Olaf by six, 75-69, on Wednesday.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Raheem Anthony (Chicago, Ill.) has led the Cardinals in scoring in four of their first five games. … Anthony, who has scored 10 or more points in all five games this season, and 42 times in his four-year collegiate career, is averaging 20.8 ppg through five games, and is shooting 51.3 percent from the field (39-for-76). … Breyton Buysman (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) is averaging 15.0 ppg, followed by Ziegler (13.2 ppg).
• GREATER THAN 20: Saint Mary’s has had a player score 20 or more points in three of their five games this season. … Anthony’s 22-point effort against Macalester on Nov. 22 marked the 14th time the senior has scored 20 or more points in a game, while his season-high 30-point performance against Crown on Nov. 8 was just five off his single-game career-high 35-point showing against St. Scholastica on Dec. 4, 2021.
• GREATER THAN 20 x 2: With the 22-point showing by Anthony and 20-point effort from Buysman against Gustavus on Nov. 22, the Cardinals have had two players score 20 or more points in the same game three times in the last two seasons — with Anthony having a hand in all three.
• CAREER NIGHTS: Ziegler’s 26 points against St. Olaf Wednesday were a career-high. 11 points more than his previous best. The junior drained a single-game, program-record eight 3-pointers en route to his 26-point effort. … Anthony dished out a career-high 10 assists against Gustavus on Nov. 19.
• HITTING DOUBLE DIGITS: Saint Mary’s has put at least three players in double figures in all five of its games – including four double-figure scorers three times.
• DOUBLING UP: Anthony has posted double-doubles in four of SMU’s five games this season — including an 18-point, 10-rebound effort against St. Olaf on Wednesday. … Anthony collected his first points-assist double-double against Gustavus on Nov. 19, scoring 19 points and adding a career-high 10 assists. Anthony was just two rebounds short of his first collegiate triple-double vs. the Gusties. … Anthony now owns 14 double-doubles in his four-year collegiate career.
• ON THE GLASS: Anthony leads the team in rebounds with 48 (9.6 rpg), while Jabari Sawyer (Chicago, Ill.) is second with 23 (4.6 rpg) — with 21 of his 23 coming on the defensive end. … SMU has amassed 152 rebounds in five games — including 120 defensive boards.
• GOING DEEP: Saint Mary’s knocked down a season-high nine 3-pointers against St. Olaf on Wednesday — eight by Ziegler, who finished 8 of 13 from behind the arc. … Ziegler — who boasted a team-leading 37 3-pointers a year ago — leads the way for SMU with 20 treys, followed by Buysman with nine. … The Cardinals — who recorded 10 or more 3-pointers in a game five times a year ago and closed out the 2021-22 season with 178 3-pointers — have knocked down 36 3-pointers this season and are shooting 40.0 from beyond the arc (36-for-90).
• LENDING A HAND: The Cardinals recorded a season-high 19 assists against Gustavus on Nov. 19 — including a career-high 10 from Anthony. The 10 assists by Anthony were the most by a Cardinal since Evan Pederson put together an 11-assist showing against Macalester on Feb. 14, 2014. … Anthony leads SMU with 29 assists, followed by Sawyer with 14. … SMU’s 19-assist effort against the Gusties were the most in a game since the Cardinals dished out 20 helpers against Augsburg on Feb. 2, 2021
• BIG SECOND HALF: The Cardinals have scored 40 or more points in the second half in three of their five games — netting 42 against Crown on Nov. 8, 40 vs. Augustana (Ill.) on Nov.12, and a season-high 45 against Macalester on Nov, 22. … SMU has netted 40 or more points in a half eight times over the last two seasons — with seven of those 40+ efforts coming in the second half. Last season, Saint Mary’s posted a season-high 47-point half against Bethel on Feb. 5, 2022.
• AS A TEAM: The Cardinals are shooting 46.7 percent from the field (140-for-300), with 36 3-pointers, and are 54-for-74 (73.0 percent) from the free throw line. … Saint Mary’s 81 points against Crown on Nov. 8 were just two shy of its season-high 83-point effort against UW-Superior from a year ago.
CARLETON KNIGHTS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Knights head into Saturday’s showdown at Saint Mary’s riding a season-opening four-game winning streak, including back-to-back wins over Bethel and Augsburg in their first two conference contests.
• LAST TIME OUT: Jeremy Becker scored a game-high 25 points and Luke Harris added 24, as the Knights rolled to an 84-67 conference win over Augsburg Wednesday in Minneapolis, Minn.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Saturday’s game at Saint Mary’s is the second of three straight road games for the Knights, who are 2-0 at home and 2-0 away from West Gym this season.
• MAGIC NUMBER: Carleton has scored 84 points in each of its two conference wins this season, beating Bethel 84-77 and topping Augsburg 84-67.
• STREAK SNAPPER: The Knights’ 17-point win snapped their five-game losing streak against the Auggies, and marked their largest margin of victory over Augsburg since a 74-56 win on Jan. 23, 2008.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Harris and Beckler both enter Saturday’s contest against Saint Mary’s averaging more than 20 points-per-game, with Harris leading the way at 24.0 ppg, followed closely by Beckler with a 21.8 ppg average. Alex Gibbens is also averaging in double figures for the Knights, scoring at an 11.8 ppg clip.
• RARE COMPANY: Harris and Beckler rank No. 1 and No. 2 in the MIAC with their 24.0 ppg and 21.8 ppg scoring averages and are one of just 11 sets of teammate across all three NCAA men’s basketball divisions to each average 20+ points-per-game.
• HITTING THE 20-POINT MARK: Carleton has had two players score 20+ points in the same game in each of Carleton’s last two games. … Harris has scored 23 or more points in all four games, including a season-high 25-point effort against Carroll on Nov. 26. … Beckler poured in a season-best 28 points against Carroll on Nov. 26.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Carleton boasts six players who have recorded 10 or more rebounds through four games, led by Beckler with 26 (6.5 rpg) and Harris with 25 (6.3 rpg). … Beckler and Harris have each hauled in a season-high nine rebounds in a game this season — Beckler against Bethel on Nov. 16 and Harris vs. both Whitworth on Nov. 25 and vs. Augsburg on Wednesday.
• RAINING IN 3s: Carleton has drained 29 3-pointers through four games this season, led by Chuck Sweat with seven, and Harris and Gibbens with five each. … Sweat poured in a season-high four 3-pointers against Bethe on Nov. 16.
• LENDING A HAND: Gibbens has dished out a team-leading 12 assists this season, two more than Beckler. … As a team, Carleton has recorded 52 assists in four games.
