SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals enter Saturday’s conference game against Carleton sitting a 1-2 overall and 1-2 in the conference. After opening the season with back-to-back losses to Gustavus (85-45) and Macalester (72-56), SMU picked up its first win of the season with a 62-60 win over St. Olaf.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Cardinals erased a 19-point fourth-quarter deficit, outscoring St. Olaf 24-3, in rallying for a 62-60 conference win over the Oles Wednesday at the Saint Mary’s Gym.
• HOME SWEET HOME: After back-to-back road games to open the season, Saturday’s contest against Carleton is the second of three consecutive home contests for the Cardinals. SMU finished 4-9 on its home floor a year ago, while also owning a 4-9 record away from the Saint Mary’s Gym.
• COMEBACK FOR THE AGES: Saint Mary’s overcame its largest fourth-quarter deficit since the NCAA switched from halves to quarters prior to the 2015-16 season against St. Olaf on Wednesday, rallying from 19 points down to beat the Oles 62-60.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Brooklyn Paulson (Holmen, Wis.) scored a team-high 21 points in SMU’s come-from-behind win over St. Olaf on Wednesday, while Allysa Coleman (Matteson, Ill.) chipped in 12 points. … Paulson and Izzy Goettelman (Winona, Minn.) both enter Saturday’s matchup against Carleton averaging in double figures. Paulson leads the way with a 14.3 ppg scoring average, percentage points in front of Goettelman (14.0 ppg). … Paulson has netted 10 or more points 61 times in her collegiate career, including 19 games of 20 or more points.
• CRACKING 20: Saint Mary’s has had a player score 20 or more points in each of its last two games. Goettelman tossed in 20 points against Macalester on Nov. 22 and Paulson delivered 21 vs. St. Olaf on Wednesday. … Goettelman’s 20-point effort against Macalester marked the second time in her collegiate career that the sophomore has scored at least 20 points, and was just two points shy of her career-high 22-point performance against St. Scholastica on Jan. 29, 2022.
• NIGHT TO REMEMBER: Paulson enjoyed a night to remember against Gustavus on Feb. 2, 2022, scoring a career-high 32 points — the most by a Cardinal since Alexa Huisman netted 32 against Hamline on Jan. 20, 2018. She also became just the second player in program history to net eight 3-pointers in a game, joining Ashley Luehmann, who achieved the feat in against St. Catherine on Jan. 22, 2005.
• CLIMBING THE LADDER: Paulson, who recorded her 1,000th career point against Gustavus on Feb. 2, 2022, is sitting ninth all-time with 1,197 career points. Next up on the list — Jess Miller ’03, who is eighth with 1,203.
• DOUBLING UP: Katelyn Cruze (Litchfield, Minn.) collected the Cardinals’ first double-double of the season — and the first of her collegiate career — against Macalester on Nov. 22, scoring 11 points and adding 10 rebounds. The 11 points and 10 rebounds were both career-highs. … Paulson recorded four double-doubles last season and owns five double-doubles in her collegiate career.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Paulson leads the Cardinals with 19 rebounds (6.3 rpg), followed by Cruze and Goettelman with 16 each (5.3 rpg). … Eighteen of Paulson’s 19 rebounds through three games have come on the defensive end, while 10 of Cruze’s 16 have been offensive boards.
• FROM BEYOND THE ARC: The Cardinals have knocked down 12 3-pointers through three games — including a season-high five against both Gustavus on Nov. 19 and vs. St. Olaf on Wednesday. … Goettelman and Paulson have each netted four 3-pointers and have accounted for eight of the team’s 12 treys this season. … SMU drained a season-high and single-game program record 15 3-pointers against Concordia on Feb. 12, 2022.
• LENDING A HAND: Ashley Streveler (Colby, Wis.) has dished out a team-high eight assists, two more than Paulson, with Goettelman, Emma Miller (Eau Claire, Wis.), and Graysin Hartjes (Kaukauna, Wis.) owning two helpers each.
• AS A TEAM:The Cardinals are shooting 31.6 percent from the field (55-for-174) with 12 3-pointers and are 41-for-58 (70.7 %) from the free throw line. … SMU is averaging 54.3 ppg, while the Cardinals’ opponents are scoring at a 72.3 ppg clip.
CARLETON KNIGHTS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Knights head into their Saturday road game at Saint Mary’s sitting at 1-4 overall, while still searching for their first conference win through three MIAC contests.
• LAST TIME OUT: Emma Henry notched her third double-double of the season with 16 points and 14 rebounds, but it was not enough, as Carleton dropped a 69-56 conference decision to Augsburg Wednesday at West Gym in Northfield, Minn.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Saturday’s game at Saint Mary’s is the first of back-to-back road contests for the Knights, who are 0-3 on their home court, while going 1-1 away from West Gym.
• NAILBITERS: Three of Carleton’s four contests have been decided by nine points or less. The Knights defeated Bethany Lutheran 69-60, while falling to Luther (57-55) and Bethel (63-56).
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Carleton boasts four players who are averaging in double figures, led by Jasmine Choi, who scored 20 points in her first game thus far this season. Amelia Solt (19.0 ppg), Alana Whitfield (12.0 ppg), and Henry (10.8 ppg) are also averaging in double figures.
• DOUBLING UP: Henry has posted double-doubles in each of Carleton’s last two games — scoring 12 points and adding 10 rebounds against Bethel on Nov. 16 and adding 16 points and 14 boards vs. Augsburg on Wednesday.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Henry enters Saturday’s game against Saint Mary’s leading the team with 42 rebounds (10.5 rpg), while Margie Clauss (15, 3.8 rpg), Bella Thomas (13, 4.3 rpg), Whittfield (12, 3.0 rpg), and Aurora Davis (12, 3.0 rpg) have also hauled in 10 or more boards for the Knights this season. … Henry’s 14-rebound effort against Augsburg on Wednesday was a career high.
• FROM DOWNTOWN: Carleton has netted 19 3-pointers this season, with Solt accounting for nine of those 19 treys. Whittfield is second on the team with four 3-pointers, followed by Henry and Choi with two each.
• LENDING A HAND: Henry owns a team-leading 10 assists, two more than Solt and three in front of Clauss. … Nine of the 10 Knights who have seen playing time this season have recorded at least one helper this season.
