SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR RECORD: The Cardinals head into the second game of their two-game conference series against nationally ranked Gustavus sitting at 1-8-0 overall record, including a 1-4-0 mark in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: Jordan Keeley (St. Peter, Minn.) kicked out 30 Gustavus shots, but it was not enougn, as the national’s No. 1-ranked team dealt the Cardinals a 4-0 conference setback Friday evening in St. Peter, Minn.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Friday’s game at Gustavus was the sixth road game of the season for the Cardinals, who have played just two of their first eight games on their home ice.
• TOUGH STRETCH: The Cardinals’ matchup against No. 1-ranked Gustavus this weekend marks the ninth and 10th straight games against teams appearing the USCHO.com Poll. Lake Forest, Hamline, and Augsburg have all received votes in the USCHO.com Top 15, while SMU has also faced then-No. 5 UW-Eau Claire (now ranked No. 9) and then-No. 7 UW-River Falls (currently ranked No. 2).
• FIT TO BE TIED: With their 1-1 stalemate against Gustavus on Jan. 28, 2022, the Cardinals have now played the Gusties to a draw at least once in each of the last four seasons.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Taryn Dornself (Somerset, Wis.) picked up her team-leading third goal of the season in SMU’s 3-2 loss to Augsburg on Nov. 19. … Dornself’s three goals are one more than Kas Kingston (Black Diamond, Alberta), who picked up a goal in both of SMU’s games against Lake Forest on Oct. 28-29. Teagan Phillips (Oregon, Wis.), Taverie Sherner (Maple Grove, Minn.), Kennedy Kraus (Kasson, Minn.), Allie Urlaub (Burnsville, Minn.), Sidney Polzin (Chippewa Falls, Wis.), Leah Parker (Hudson, Wis.), Anna Braun (Mantorville, Minn.) and Katie Pierpont (Holt, Mich.) own Saint Mary’s other eight goals this season
• FIRST AS A CARDINAL: Saint Mary’s has had four players score their first collegiate goals this season. Phillips and Sherner netted goal No. 1 as a Cardinal against Augsburg on Nov. 18, while Dornself’s first-period goal against Lake Forest on Oct. 29 was her first as a Cardinal, and Parker netted career goal No. 1 against Hamline on Nov. 12. … Saint Mary’s had 10 players net their first collegiate goals a year ago.
• LENDING A HAND: Saint Mary’s has eight players — Polzin, Parker, Kraus, Pierpont, Polzin, Urlaub, Ella Ausman (Chippewa Falls, Wis.), Ellie Hegdahl (Brookings, S.D.), and Anne Carmean (Spring Lake Park, Minn.) — who share the team lead with two assists. Dornself, Abigail Painovich (Hinckley, Minn.), Sydney Green (East Bethel, Minn.), and Morgan Leib (Farmington Hills, Mich.) all own one helper.
• POINT PRODUCERS: Dornself leads the team with four points through nine games, one more than Kraus, Parker, Pierpont, Polzin, and Urlaub, with Kingston, Ausman, Carmean, and Hegdahl chipping in two points each.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: Saint Mary’s 10 points in its 4-2 win over Augsburg on Nov. 18 came from 10 different players: Phillips, Sherner, Urlaub, and Polzin scored goals, while Kraus, Ausman, Hegdahl, Dornself, Pierpont, and Parker all had assists.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Jordan Keeley (St. James, Minn.) and Celeste Rimstad (Richfield, Minn.) have shared the goaltending duties for the Cardinals this season. Keeley has stopped 214 of the 232 shots she’s faced in six starts and owns a 3.06 goals-against-average and .922 save percentage, while Rimstad has recorded 84 saves in her first three starts and sports a 3.28 GAA and .894 save %. … Keeley has stopped 30 or more shots in five of her six starts this season. … Rimstad’s 18-save effort against Lake Forest on Oct. 29 marked the first collegiate start for the freshman, while her 40-save showing vs. Hamline last Saturday was a career-high.
• CAREER EFFORT: Keeley stopped a career-high 49 shots in SMU’s 3-2 loss to Augsburg on Nov. 19. The 49 saves were four more than her previous career-best and the most by a Cardinal goalie since Ary Ziakas stopped 55 against Gustavus on Jan. 28, 2022.
• SHUTTING THEM OUT: Keeley’s 19 save effort in SMU’s 0-0 tie against Bethel on Feb. 19, 2022 was her third collegiate shutout, having posted a pair of shutouts during her freshman season.
• WORKING OVERTIME: SMU’s 3-2 loss to Lake Forest on Oct. 29 was the Cardinals’ first overtime game of the season. Saint Mary’s played four overtime games a year ago, finishing 1-1-2 in those four contests.
• FIRST-GOAL ADVANTAGE: The team that has scored first has won 27 of the Cardinals’ last 31 games. Two of those exceptions came on Oct. 28-29, when Saint Mary’s scored first in back-to-back losses Lake Forest
• BY THE NUMBERS: SMU has scored four goals in both the first and third periods, while netting five goals in the third. On the flip side, the Cardinals’ opponents have scored nine times in the first period, 11 times in the second, 10 times in the third, and once in OT. … Saint Mary’s is 2-for-37 on the powerplay, while killing off 32 of its opponents 38 PP opportunities. … SMU’s four goals, six assists, and 10 points in its 4-2 win over Augsburg on Nov. 18 were all season highs.
GUSTAVUS GUSTIES SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Gusties head into their Saturday rematch against Saint Mary’s unbeaten in their first nine contests, including a perfect 5-0-0 mark in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: Emily Olson scored a pair of goals in leading the Gusties to a 4-0 conference win over Saint Mary’s Friday evening at Don Roberts Ice Arena in St. Peter, Minn.
• MAGICAL RIDE: The Gusties are coming off a magical 2021-22 season, culminated with a second-place finish in the NCAA national tournament. GAC scored the game-tying goal with one-tenth of a second remaining in regulation, before falling to Middlebury 3-2 in overtime in the national title game. … The Gusties have now made four Frozen Four appearances, with the runner-up finish the highest in program history.
• TOTAL DOMINATION: The Gusties have allowed just four goals through their first nine games, outscoring their opponents 43-4. … GAC has posted three, seven-goal games this season, while also adding a season-high nine-goal showing in a 9-1 rout of St. Scholastica on Nov. 10.
• NAILBITERS: Gustavus has played two games decided by one goal, posting 1-0 victories over Augsburg on Oct. 28 and Lake Forest on Nov. 5.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Clara Billings has been virtually unstoppable this season, scoring a team-high nine goals in GAC’s first nine games. She is one of 14 different Gusties to net at least one goal this season. … Brooke Power is second to Billings with seven goals, one more than Lily Mortenson and two up on Kaitlyn Holland. … Six of Billings’ nine goals have come on the power play. … Gustavus has had a player score two goals in a game nine times — including four by Billings.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: Gustavus’ nine game-winning goals have come from six different players, led by Power with three and Molly McHugh with two.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Emily Holland has recorded a team-leading nine assists, followed by Kayla Vrieze with seven and Hailey Holland with six. … Hailey Holland dished out a single-game season-high three assists against Lake Forest on Nov. 4.
• POINT PRODUCTION: Eighteen different players have recorded at least one point for the Gusties this season, led by Billings and Power with 12 each. Olson (11) and Mortenson (10) have also reached double figures in points this season. … Billings and Hailey Holland have each posted four-point games this season — Billings against UW-Superior on Nov. 19 (2 G, 2 A) and Holland vs. Lake Forest on Nov. 4 (1 G, 3 A).
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: GAC has used three different goalies this season, with Katie McCoy seeing the brunt of the work. McCoy has compiled a 0.52 goals-against-average and .960 save percentage in nine starts (462:10). Jori Jones has stopped all five shots she’s faced in 53:07 minutes of work, while Maria Widen owns four saves on four shots in 24:33 minutes of action. … McCoy has made 96 saves and posted three shutouts through nine games.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Gustavus has allowed just one goal in both the first and third periods, while surrendering a pair of tallies in the second. GAC has outscored its opponents 14-1 in the first period, 17-2 in the second, and 12-1 in the third. … Gustavus has not allowed more than 18 shots on goal in any of its first nine contests. The Gusties are averaging 41.2 shots-per-game, while their opponents are sitting at 11.6 spg.
