SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their nonconference showdown at North Park sitting at 3-5 overall, including a 2-4 showing after five conference games.
• LAST TIME OUT: Saint Mary’s picked up arguably the biggest win in program history yon Dec. 14, as the Cardinals got a career-high 23 points from Breyton Buysman (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) and rolled to a 73-66 win over seventh-ranked UW-La Crosse at Mitchell Hall in La Crosse, Wis.
• A WIN FOR THE AGES: SMU’s six-point win over No. 7 UW-La Crosse marked the first time in program history the Cardinals had beaten a team ranked in the Top 10 in the country. … The win also snapped a six-game losing streak against the Eagles — dating back to a 65-50 triumph on Nov. 24, 1986.
• HOME (OR ROAD) SWEET HOME: With their 73-66 win over UW-La Crosse on Dec. 14, the Cardinals have now posted seven of their last 11 wins on the road. SMU is 1-2 on its home court this season, while going 2-3 in five road contests. … Friday’s game against North Park is SMU’s third straight road contest.
• CLOSE CALLS: The Cardinals’ six-point, 73-66 win over UW-La Crosse was their fifth game this season decided by 10 points or less — including four of five MIAC contests. SMU has dropped nail-biting decisions to Concordia (82-77), Gustavus (74-71), Macalester by one (77-76) and St. Olaf (75-69).
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Raheem Anthony (Chicago, Ill.) has led the Cardinals in scoring in five of their first eight games. … Anthony, who has scored 10 or more points in all eight contests this season, and 45 times in his four-year collegiate career, is averaging a team-leading 21.4 ppg through eight games, and is shooting 52.9 percent from the field (64-for-121).
• PLENTY OF OFFENSIVE WEAPONS: Along with Anthony, Owen Ziegler (Mount Horeb, Wis.) and Buysman are also averaging in double figures, sitting at 14.9 ppg and 14.0 ppg, respectively.
• GREATER THAN 20: Saint Mary’s has had a player score 20 or more points in six of its eight games this season — including Anthony’s 28-point showing against Concordia on Dec. 10, and Buysman’s 23-point effort against UW-La Crosse four days later. … Anthony’s 28-point effort against Concordia marked the 16th time the senior has scored 20 or more points in a game, while his season-high 30-point performance against Crown on Nov. 8 was just five off his single-game career-high 35-point showing against St. Scholastica on Dec. 4, 2021.
• GREATER THAN 20 x 2: With the 30-point showing by Ziegler and 25-point effort by Anthony against Carleton on Dec. 3, the Cardinals have had two players score 20 or more points in the same game twice this season and four times in the last two seasons — with Anthony having a hand in all four.
• GREATER THAN 30 x 2: With Ziegler’s 30-point showing against Carleton on Dec. 3, Saint Mary’s has had a player score 30 points in a game twice this season. Anthony netted 30 against Crown on Nov. 8.
• CAREER NIGHTS: Buysman poured in a career-best 23 points in SMU’s win over No. 7 UW-La Crosse on Dec. 14. … After scoring a then-career high 26 points against St. Olaf on Nov. 30, Ziegler improved that mark by four against Carleton on Dec. 3, netting 30 points against the Knights. … Anthony dished out a career-high 10 assists against Gustavus on Nov. 19.
• HITTING DOUBLE DIGITS: Saint Mary’s has put at least three players in double figures in seven of its first eight games – including four double-figure scorers three times.
• WEEKLY HONOR: Thanks to his career-high 23-point effort against No. 7 UW-La Crosse on Dec. 14, Buysman was named MIAC Offensive Player of the Week on Dec. 19. It was the first MIAC weekly honor of his collegiate career.
• DOUBLING UP: Anthony has posted double-doubles in four of SMU’s eight games this season. … Anthony collected his first points/assist double-double against Gustavus on Nov. 19, scoring 19 points and adding a career-high 10 assists. Anthony was just two rebounds short of his first collegiate triple-double vs. the Gusties. … Anthony now owns 14 double-doubles in his four-year collegiate career.
• ON THE GLASS: Anthony leads the team in rebounds with 68 (8.5 rpg), while Jabari Sawyer (Chicago, Ill.) is second with 36 (4.5 rpg) — with 31 of his 36 boards coming on the defensive end. … SMU has amassed 249 rebounds in eight games — including 190 defensive boards.
• GOING DEEP: Saint Mary’s equaled the program’s single-game record with 14 3-pointers against Carleton on Dec. 3, and followed that up with 13 3-pointers against Concordia on Dec. 10. … Ziegler netted a single-game program record eight 3-pointers for the second straight game against Carleton, going 8-for-14 from beyond the arc. The junior was 8-for-13 in first setting the school record against St. Olaf on Nov. 30. … Ziegler — who boasted a team-leading 37 3-pointers a year ago — leads the way for SMU with 32 treys, followed by Buysman with 18. … Anthony matched his single-game career-high with four 3-pointers against Concordia on Dec. 10 – all in the first half. … The Cardinals have knocked down 72 3-pointers this season and are shooting 43.1 percent from beyond the arc (63-for-143).
• LENDING A HAND: The Cardinals recorded a season-high 19 assists against Gustavus on Nov. 19 — including a career-high 10 from Anthony. The 10 assists by Anthony were the most by a Cardinal since Evan Pederson put together an 11-assist showing against Macalester on Feb. 14, 2014. … Anthony leads SMU with 45 assists, followed by Sawyer with 22. … SMU’s 19-assist effort against the Gusties were the most in a game since the Cardinals dished out 20 helpers against Augsburg on Feb. 2, 2021
• BIG HALF: The Cardinals have scored 40 or more points in a half in five of their eight games — including 40+ in both halves against Carleton on Dec. 3. … SMU has netted 40 or more points in a half 11 times over the last two seasons — with nine of those 40+ efforts coming in the second half. Last season, Saint Mary’s posted a season-high 47-point half against Bethel on Feb. 5, 2022.
• BY THE NUMBERS: The Cardinals are shooting 46.9 percent from the field (229-for-488), with 72 3-pointers, and are 75-for-104 (72.1 %) from the free throw line. … SMU went 5-for-5 from the free throw line against Carleton on Dec. 3 — and did not attempt a first-half free throw. … Saint Mary’s 85 points against Carleton on Dec. 3 were a season high, and the second time this season the Cardinals have eclipsed the 80-point mark, having netted 81 in beating Crown 81-69 on Nov. 8. … SMU’s 85 points against Carleton on Dec. 3 were the most since SMU netted 87 against Hamline on Jan. 11, 2020.
NORTH PARK VIKINGS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: North Park heads into its home nonconference game against Saint Mary’s boasting a near-perfect 9-1 record, including an unblemished 3-0 mark through the first three games of the CCIW slate.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Vikings put four players in double figures — led by Jalen Boyd with 17 points — as North Park picked its second win in as many days with an 80-76 victory over Dominican on Dec. 20 in Chicago, Ill.
• ON A ROLL: After opening the season 2-1 — beating East-West University and Grinnell, before dropping an 80-73 decision to Hope — the Vikings have rattled off seven straight wins heading into Friday’s matchup against Saint Mary’s.
• HOME SWEET HOME: North Park has played just three of its first 10 games on its home court — but the Vikings have won all three of those contests — while sporting a 6-1 record away from North Park Gymnasium. …
• BALANCED OFFENSE: The Vikings head into their nonconference game against Saint Mary’s boasting four players who are averaging in double figures in scoring. Kolden Vanlandingham leads the way for North Park, averaging 16.9 ppg, followed by Marquise Jackson (15.0 ppg), Boys (14.5), and Shamar Pumphrey (11.7 ppg). … Vanlandingham has scored 10 or more points in nine of the team’s 10 games — including four games of 20 or more points. … Vanlandingham and Jackson have each posted games with 30 or more points — Vanlandingham tossed in 30 points against Augustana (Ill.) on Dec. 10 and Jackson delivered a single-game season-high 40 against Marian on Nov. 22.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Jordan Boyd comes into Friday’s game leading the team in rebounds with 65 (6.5 rpg), followed closely by Vanlandingham (48, 4.8 rpg), Jalen Boyd (48, 4.8 rpg), and Jackson (41, 5.1 rpg). … Jordan Boyd pulled down a season-high 14 rebounds in North Park’s win over Grinnell on Nov. 12.
• RAINING IN 3s: North Park has drained 75 3-pointers through 10 games, led by Vanlandingham, who has gone 23 of 61 (37.7 %) from beyond the arc this season. Jalen Boyd and Pumphrey have also knocked down 10 or more 3s this season, sitting at 16 and 13, respectively.
• LENDING A HAND: Pumphrey has dished out a team-high 57 assists, with Jackson chipping in 31. Vanlandingham (17) and Jordan Boyd (16) have also tabbed more than 10 helpers through 10 games.
• POURING IN THE POINTS: North Park has scored 80 or more points five times this season — including eclipsing the 90-point barrier on three occasions. The Vikings netted 90 points in beating North Central (Ill.) 90-56 on Dec. 3, added a 99-point night in drubbing Blackburn 99-82 on Dec. 19, and poured in a season-high 126 points in a 126-95 rout of Grinnell on Nov. 12.
