Cardinals' Ziegler lands MIAC honor

WINONA, Minn. — To say that Owen Ziegler (Mount Horeb, Wis.) had a week to remember would be a vast understatement.

Ziegler had a week for the ages is more like it.

The Cardinal junior averaged 29.0 points and poured in a single-game school-record eight 3-pointers — twice — in the Saint Mary's men's basketball team's two games last week.

And Ziegler's performance impressed more than the Cardinal faithful, as the junior was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Ziegler was virtually unstoppable from beyond the arc in the Cardinals' first game of the week, scoring a then-career-high 26 points on 9 of 14 shooting — including a stellar 8-for-13 showing from behind the arc — in SMU's 75-69 loss to St. Olaf.

Three days later, Ziegler was at it again — only better.

Fueled by a second straight program-record eight 3-pointers, Ziegler did his St. Olaf career-best four points better, pouring in 30 points in leading the Cardinals to a convincing 85-66 win over Carleton.

For the week, Ziegler finished 21-for-36 from the field — including 16 of 27 from 3-point range — and hauled in 11 rebounds.

Ziegler and the Cardinals (2-3 MIAC, 2-4 overall) are back in action on Saturday, when they travel to Concordia's Memorial Auditorium in Moorhead, Minn., for a 1 p.m. conference matchup against the Cobbers.
