• 2: Maggie Frye (Colorado Springs, Colo.) had a hand in two of the Cardinal women’s tennis team’s season-ending 5-4 loss to St. Scholastica last Saturday, winning 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 singles and teaming with Kennedy Morgan (Green Bay, Wis.) for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles.
• 3: Heather Nordlund (Byron, Minn.) drove in a career-high three runs in the Cardinal fastpitch softball team’s 11-9, Game 2 win over Gustavus last Sunday.
• 3-3: Trevon VanEgtern (La Crosse, Wis.) went a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI in the Cardinal baseball team’s 6-4, Game 1 win over Hamline last Tuesday.
• 4: The Saint Mary’s baseball team scored four first-inning runs and held on for a 5-3 victory in the second game of its MIAC split against Augsburg last Thursday.
• 4: Trevon VanEgtern (La Crosse, Wis.) launched his fourth home run of the season as part of a 3-for-4 performance in the Saint Mary’s baseball team’s 8-3, Game 2 loss to Gustavus last Sunday.
• 4-0: The SMU baseball team rallied from a 4-0 deficit with three runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth in beating Hamline 6-4 in the opening game of the teams’ sweep of the Pipers last Tuesday.
• 4-5: Allison Ciero (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) went 4-for-5 in the Cardinal fastpitch softball team’s doubleheader sweep of Augsburg last Saturday. Ciero finished 2-for-3 with a walk and a pair of runs scored in SMU’s 6-1, Game 1 win, before adding a 2-for-2, two-walk outing in the nightcap, a 4-3 Cardinal win.
• 5 x 2: The Saint Mary’s fastpitch softball team had five players record two hits in a game in its doubleheader split against Gustavus last Sunday. Allison Ciero (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) had two hits in the opener, while Riley Hall (Dallas Center, Iowa), Heather Nordlund (Byron, Minn.), Erin Sullivan (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.), and Amy Kulaga (Riverside, Ill.) all collected two hits in the nightcap.
• 5, 4: Addison Hochevar (Lake Geneva, Wis.) and Andrew Fischer (La Crosse, Wis.) proved to be a potent 1-2 punch for the SMU baseball team in last Thursday’s 5-3, Game 2 win over Augsburg. Hochevar allowed three runs on four hits with seven strikeouts in five innings, while Fischer blanked the Auggies on five hits over the final four innings in recording his team-leading fifth save of the season.
• 5-7: Sophie Cave (Maplewood, Minn.) went 5-for-7 with six RBIs in the Cardinal fastpitch softball team’s split against St. Scholastica last Thursday. The junior went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs in the opener, before going 2-for-3 with four RBIs in the nightcap.
• 5-8: Brandon Merfeld (La Crosse, Wis.) collected five hits in eight at-bats in the Cardinal baseball team’s conference split against Augsburg last Thursday. Merfeld 2-for-4 with a double, triple, and a pair of runs scored in Game 1, before adding a three hits in four at-bats in Game 2.
• 6: Six of the Saint Mary’s men’s tennis team’s 12 singles matches last weekend were extended to a third set. The Cardinals closed out the 2022 season having played 45 three-set singles matches.
• 6: The Saint Mary’s track and field teams combined for six Top 10 finishes at last Saturday’s UW-La Crosse Phil Esten Challenge, led by Anna Swanson’s (Osceola, Wis.) first-place showing in the javelin (41.39m). Caroline Gearin (Osceola, Wis.) Gearin cleared 3.53 meters to finish tied for fourth in the pole vault, while Sean Curran (Appleton, Wis.) delivered a throw of 52.68 meters in placing fourth in the hammer. Frankie Bakalars (La Crosse, Wis.) chipped in a sixth-place effort of 50.26 meters in the men’s hammer throw, while Sydney Klausler (Lakeville, Minn.) delivered an eighth-place leap of 5.44 meters in the women’s long jump, and Amanda Tuvey stopped the clock in 13:10.28 to finish ninth in the women’s steeplechase.
• 7: The Saint Mary’s baseball team scored seven runs in the fourth inning of last Tuesday’s 9-1, Game 2 victory over Hamline. The seven-run inning was one shy of SMU’s season-high eight-run second inning in its 16-7 win over Rose-Hulman on March 3.
• 9: The Saint Mary’s baseball team’s nine hits in its doubleheader against Gustavus last Saturday came from eight different players. Daniel Marxen (Maple Grove, Minn.), Ben Coons (Kimberly, Wis.), Mason Coyle (Madison, Wis.), and Will Boeckman (Big Lake, Minn.) each had one hit in Game 1, while Trevon VanEgtern (La Crosse, Wis.) had three hits and Tyler O’Brien (Belle Plaine, Minn.) and Tanner Bauman (Willmar, Minn.) recorded the other two.
• 10 x 2: The Saint Mary’s fastpitch softball team scored 10 runs in both of its games against St. Scholastica last Thursday. SMU plated 10 in a 14-10 loss in the opener, before earning the split with a 10-7 win in the nightcap.
• 11: The SMU fastpitch softball team scored in double digits for the third time in a four-day span, plating 11 runs in an 11-9, Game 2 win over Gustavus last Sunday. Saint Mary’s has now scored 10 or more runs eight times this season.
• 12: Josh Janssen (Green Bay, Wis.) and Brandon Kurilla (Hastings, Minn.) teamed up to record a team-leading 12 doubles victories for the Saint Mary’s men’s tennis team — with all 12 wins coming at No. 1 doubles.
• 13, 11: Zoie Becker (St. James, Minn.) closed out the season as the Cardinal women’s tennis team’s leader in singles wins with 13, while Maddie Dosser (South St. Paul, Minn.), Maggie Frye (Colorado Springs, Colo.), and Kennedy Morgan (Green Bay, Wis.) shared the team lead with 11 doubles wins.
• 14: E.J. Hietala (Duluth, Minn.) closed out the season leading the Saint Mary’s men’s tennis team with 14 singles matches. Hietala and Tucker Stene (Fridley, Minn.) shared the team lead with 11 singles victories in the Cardinals’ 21 dual matches.
• 15: Sarah Kraus (Onalaska, Wis.) tossed back-to-back complete games, striking out a combined 15 batters, in the Cardinal fastpitch softball team’s losses to No. 14 Bethel last Tuesday. Kraus’s eight Game 1 strikeouts were one shy of her career high.
• 24: The 24 combined runs between the Saint Mary’s fastpitch softball team and St. Scholastica in last Thursday’s 14-10 CSS victory were the most combined runs since the Cardinals and Macalester combined for 33 runs in an 18-15 SMU win on April 22, 2015.
