SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their conference-opening home match against Augsburg sitting at 4-2 overall.
• LAST ACTION: After opening the season 3-1 at the Grinnell/Central Invitational on Sept. 3-4, the Cardinals went 1-1 at last Saturday’s UW-Stevens Point Invitational, falling to No. 24 UW-Stevens Point 3-0, before rebounding with a 3-1 win over Marian.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Wednesday’s match against Augsburg is the home opener for the Cardinals, who played their first six matches on the road, and will play 14 of their first 15 contests away from the Saint Mary’s Gym.
• ON THE ATTACK: Ciarra McNally (Lewiston, Minn.) — who led the team with 25 kills in their two matches at the UW-Stevens Point Invitational last Saturday — leads the team with 82 kills, followed by Abbie Stigler (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) with 46, Braidyn Ruetten (Holmen, Wis.) with 42, and Brenna Bruchert (Eau Claire, Wis.) with 32. … McNally delivered a single-match season-high 28 kills against Grinnell on Sept. 2, and has now recorded 10 or more kills 26 times in her collegiate career — including six matches of 20 or more kills.
• ON THE ATTACK, PART II: The Cardinals had two players record career-highs of 10 or more kills during the season-opening Grinnell/Central Invitational. Bruchert recorded 10 kills in the Cardinals’ 3-2 loss to Grinnell, while Stigler posted 11 kills in SMU’s 3-1 win over Buena Vista the following afternoon.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Mandy Schmidt (Mitchell, S.D.) and Larkin Clem (Elk River, Minn.) have shared the setting duties this season, with Schmidt owning a team-high 108 assists, followed closely by Clem with 88. … With her 24 assists against Grinnell on Sept. 2 and 24 vs. Buena Vista on Sept.3, Schmidt has now recorded at least 20 helpers in a match 16 times in the past two seasons.
• DOUBLING UP: McNally picked up her team-leading fourth double-double against Marian last Saturday, posting 16 kills and 16 digs. Schmidt — who led the team with seven double-doubles last season — has a pair of double-doubles, while Clem collected her first of the season with 16 assists and 12 digs v. Marian last Saturday.
• DIGGING IT: Peyton Berg (Chatfield, Minn.) heads into Tuesday’s showdown against Augsburg owning a team-high 95 digs, including a career-best 25-dig effort against Grinnell on Sept. 2. … McNally is currently second on the team with 71 digs, followed by Schmidt with 49 and Hannah Herman (Fall Creek, Wis.) with 44.
• SERVING UP ACES: Along with her team-leading 95 digs, Berg also leads the team — and the conference — with 27 service aces. Herman and Clem have also reached double figures in aces with 11 each. … As a team, Saint Mary’s owns 69 aces through six matches.
• FAST START: The Cardinals have won the first set in all four of their wins this season, while going 0-2 when losing the first set of the match.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: The 2021 season is the first at the helm for Cardinal coach Amber Zitzow — who picked up her first Saint Mary’s victory with a 3-0 win over last weekend at the Grinnell/Central Invitational. Zitzow spent the 2021 season as an assistant coach at UM-Morris, after serving 12 seasons at Rochester Community Technical College (RCTC), the first four as an assistant coach and the last eight as the Yellowjackets’ head coach.
AUGSBURG AUGGIES SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Auggies enter Tuesday’s conference-opener against Saint Mary’s boasting a near-perfect 7-1 record — the lone blemish a 3-0 loss to No. 18 Southwestern (TX) on Sept. 1.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Auggies posted four straight wins during their home invitational last weekend, topping UM-Morris and No. 5 UW-Eau Claire by 3-1 counts on Friday, while adding back-to-back 3-0 sweeps of UW-La Crosse and Pacific Lutheran the following afternoon.
• STREAKING: The Auggies head into Tuesday’s matchup against Saint Mary’s having won five straight and seven of their first eight.
• AGAINST THE BEST: Augsburg has faced a pair of nationally ranked foes this season, falling to then-No. 18 Southwestern (TX) 3-0 on Sept. 1 and beating No. 5-ranked UW-Eau Claire 3-1 last Friday.
• HOME SWEET HOME: The Auggies are a perfect 4-0 on their home court this season, while going 1-1 on the road and 2-0 in neutral-site matches.
• ON THE ATTACK: Augsburg has already amassed 357 kills through eight matches and are hitting .206 as a team. … Kevin Boysen leads the Auggie offensive attack with 93 kills, followed by Jade Fullerton with 78, Bri van Well with 71, and Kayla Gjerde with 59. … Boysen has recorded 10 or more kills in six of the team’s eight matches, including a season-high 19 against UM-Morris last Friday.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Mikayla Coops has been an assist machine for the Auggies, accounting for 264 of the team’s 334 helpers in eight matches, including a season-best 50-asssits effort against No. 5 UW-Eau Claire last Friday. … Coops has posted 30 or more assists in a match four times.
• DIGGING IT: Angel Vo leads the way for the Auggies with 111 digs, followed closely by Coops (92) and Gjerde (86). … Vo has recorded at least 10 digs in all eight matches this season, and owns a pair of season-high 18-dig efforts.
• DOUBLING UP: Coops leads the team with six double-doubles through eight matches, while Boysen and Gjerde have both posted two.
• SERVING UP ACES: Augsburg has collected 45 service aces this season, led by Coops with 15 and Emily Kaup with 13.
• AS A TEAM: The Auggies have recorded 357 kills (12.75 kps) and are hitting .206, while owning 334 assists, 45 aces, 512 digs and 93 blocks (12 BS, 81 BA).
• BY THE NUMBERS: The Auggies have won the opening set in five of their eight matches. … Four of Augsburg’s eight matches have been decided in three sets — the Auggies are 3-1 in those four matches — while going 4-0 in four-set matches.
