SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into this weekend’s three matches at the Ripon Red Hawk Invitational sitting at 5-6 overall.
• LAST ACTION: The Cardinals finished 1-3 in their four matches at the Loras Invitational last weekend, opening with a 3-0 win over Buena Vista, before dropping back-to-back-to-back 3-2 decisions to Webster, Knox, and Grinnell
• FAMILIAR FOES: The Cardinals’ matches against Buena Vista and Grinnell at last weekend’s Loras Invitational marked the second time this season the teams have squared off. SMU is now 2-0 against Buena Vista, while dropping both matches to Grinnell — with both matches going the maximum five sets.
• ROAD WARRIORS: SMU’s Sept. 13 match against No.24 Augsburg was the home opener for the Cardinals, who played their first six matches on the road, and will play 14 of their first 15 contests away from the Saint Mary’s Gym.
• ON THE ATTACK: Ciarra McNally (Lewiston, Minn.) heads into the weekend leading the team with 147 kills, followed by Abbie Stigler (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) with 110. Braidyn Ruetten () is third on the team with 79 kills, while Elise Amerongen (Lake Elmo, Minn.) and Brenna Bruchert (Eau Claire, Wis.) are sitting at 47 and 44 kills, respectively.
• DOUBLE DIGITS: McNally delivered a single-match season-high 28 kills against Grinnell on Sept. 2, and has now recorded 10 or more kills 29 times in her collegiate career — including seven matches of 20 or more kills.
• CAREER BESTS: The Cardinals have had two players post career-highs of 10 or more kills this season. Stigler recorded a career-best 21 kills against Webster last Friday, while Bruchert posted 10 kills in the Cardinals’ 3-2 loss to Grinnell on Sept. 2. … Stigler posted a career-high 16 digs against Webster last Friday, and McNally notched a career-high 20 digs against Grinnell last Saturday, while Peyton Berg (Chatfield, Minn.) put up a career-best 25 digs vs. Grinnell on Sept. 2.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Mandy Schmidt (Mitchell, S.D.) and Larkin Clem (Elk River, Minn.) have shared the setting duties this season, with Schmidt owning a team-high 203 assists, followed closely by Clem with 156. … With her season-high 31 assists against Knox last Saturday, and 23- and 21-assist efforts against Webster and Grinnell last weekend, Schmidt has now recorded at least 20 helpers in a match 19 times in the past two seasons.
• DOUBLING UP: McNally picked up three double-doubles in four matches at last weekend’s Loras Invitational, pushing her team-leading total to seven. Schmidt — who led the team with seven double-doubles last season — has four double-doubles, while Clem collected her first of the season with 16 assists and 12 digs v. Marian on Sept. 10, and Stigler picked up her first collegiate double-double with 21 kills and 16 digs — both career-highs — against Webster last Friday.
• DIGGING IT: Berg heads into the weekend owning a team-high 154 digs, and has collected 10 or more digs in seven of the Cardinals’ 11 matches this season. … McNally is currently second on the team with 128 digs, followed by Schmidt with 94 and Hannah Herrem (Fall Creek, Wis.) with 75.
• SERVING UP ACES: Along with her team-leading 154 digs, Berg also leads the team — and the conference — with 28 service aces. Herrem is second on the team with 15 aces, followed by Clem with 14, and McNally and Faith VanErp (Sartell, Minn.) with 12 each. … As a team, Saint Mary’s owns 94 aces through 11 matches.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: The 2021 season is the first at the helm for Cardinal coach Amber Zitzow — who picked up her first Saint Mary’s victory with a 3-0 win over Marian on Sept. 2. Zitzow spent the 2021 season as an assistant coach at UM-Morris, after serving 12 seasons at Rochester Community Technical College (RCTC), the first four as an assistant coach and the last eight as the Yellowjackets’ head coach.
RIPON RED HAWKS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Red Hawks head into their home tournament mired in a 1-11 start to the 2022 season.
• LAST TIME OUT: Ripon came up empty in its four matches at the UW-La Crosse Tournament, falling to UW-La Crosse, Bethany Lutheran, UW-River Falls, and Simpson — all by 3-0 counts.
• STREAKING: With their four losses last weekend, the Red Hawks saw their losing streak climb to a season-high nine straight. … Ripon picked up its lone win — a 3-0 victory over Blackburn on Sept. 2 — a victory that snapped the Red Hawks’ season-opening two-match losing streak.
• ROAD WARRIORS: The Red Hawks have played eight of their first 12 matches away from home. Ripon is 0-4 on their home court at Doc Weiske Memorial Gymnasium, while owning a 1-7 record in neutral-site contests.
• ON THE ATTACK: Inesha Wiseman is the Red Hawks’ offensive leader, amassing 129 kills in 12 matches, while hitting .188 (129-for-373). … Lydia Ellis is second to Wiseman with 66 kills, followed by Arynn Mathieu with 57. … Wiseman owns seven matches of 10 or more kills, including a season-high 18 against Blackburn on Sept. 3.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Riley Nielsen has been the Red Hawks’ assist leader, compiling 246 helpers through 12 contests. … Nielsen has reached double figures in assists in all 12 matches, including five performances of 20 or more assists. … Nielsen dished out a season-high 41 assists against Maranatha Baptist on Sept. 10.
• DIGGING IT: Ripon has five players with 50 or more digs, led by Sam Thrasher with 173. Cornell is seven digs shy of the century mark, while Neilsen has 75, Kasuboski has 69, and Lani Harris has 52.
• SERVING UP ACES: Ripon has served up 50 aces this season, led by Tayla Cornell with 13. Mathieu is second to Cornell with eight aces, followed by Ellis with seven and Bella Kasuboski with six.
• AS A TEAM: Ripon has collected 382 kills and are averaging just 9.79 kps. The Red Hawks own 376 assists, 50 aces and 594 digs. … Eight of Ripon’s 11 losses this season have been 3-0 sweeps, with the other three being decided in four sets.
LAKELAND MUSKIES SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: Lakeland enters the weekend boasting a 5-9 overall record, including a 3-0 win over MSOE on Tuesday.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Muskies kicked off Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play in convincing fashion on Tuesday, getting eight kills from both Katie Metzler and Susana Stevens in cruising to a 3-0 win over MSOE.
• STREAKING: With their sweep of MSOE on Tuesday, the Muskies put an end to their season-high six-match losing streak. After opening the season 3-1 — thanks to a season-opening loss to Carthage and three straight wins over Carroll, Trine, and Augustana, Lakeland has managed just two wins in their last 10 contests.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Tuesday’s match against MSOE was just the second home match of the season for the Muskies, who are 1-1 at home, while going 4-8 away from Woltzen Gymnasium — including 4-5 in neutral-site matches.
• VS. THE MIAC: Saturday’s match against Saint Mary’s will be the third and final opponent from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) for the Muskies, who have played two prior MIAC foes — falling to St. Catherine (3-0) and Saint Benedict (3-1) at last weekend’s UW-Eau Claire Tournament.
• ON THE ATTACK: Lakeland enters its matches this weekend boasting two players who have eclipsed 100 kills this season — Metzler (115) and Kelly Swope (102). Stevens is third on the team with 95 digs, followed by Hailey DeGrave with 89. … Metzler has recorded 10 or more kills in a match four times
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Emily Duchow has amassed a team-high 390 assists through 14 matches, with Rose Carrasquillo and Maeve Sullivan chipping in 45 and 39 helpers, respectively. … Duchow has recorded 20 or more assists in 12 of the team’s 14 matches — including a season-high 41-assists effort against Carroll on Sept. 2.
• DIGGING IT: Along with her 45 assists, Sullivan boasts a team-leading 216 digs. She is one of four Muskies with 100 or more digs through 15 matches, being joined by Brelynn Scoles (114), Duchow (113), and Swope (103).
• SERVING UP ACES: Lakeland has delivered 91 service aces this season, led by Sullivan with 27. DeGrave and Swope are tied for second with 12 aces, with Metzler and Duchow each adding 11.
• AS A TEAM: Lakeland owns 563 kills, 527 assists, 91 aces, and 737 digs through 14 matches. … Lakeland’s 3-0 win over MSOE on Tuesday was its first sweep of the season. The Muskies also own three four-set wins and one five-setter. On the flip side, has been swept four times, while losing in four sets in their other five losses.
MARANATHA BAPTIST SABERCATS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: Maranatha Baptist enters tournament play sitting at 4-3 overall through seven matches.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Sabercats went 3-1 at the Lawrence Tournament in Appleton, Wis., last weekend, beating Mount Mary (3-2), Lawrence (3-0), and Rockford (3-0), before falling to Northland (3-1).
• STREAKING: After opening the season 1-2, the Sabercats rattled off three straight wins, before having that three-game winning streak snapped with last Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Northland at the Lawrence Tournament.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Maranatha Baptist is in the midst of playing its first 10 matches on the road. The Sabercats, who are 2-0 in road contests and 2-3 in neutral-site matches, kick off the home portion of their schedule on Sept. 27 against Alverno.
• ON THE ATTACK: Mattie Bumpus leads a balanced Maranatha Baptist offensive attack, boasting a team-best 77 kills, while Caitrin Kemlo (64), Delaney Thompson (53), and Arielle Henkel (53) also recording more than 50 kills through the first seven matches this season. … Bumpus posted a season-best 28-kill performance against Mount Mary on Sept. 16.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Emily Johnson has carried the load as the Sabercats’ setter, accounting for 231 of the team’s 275 assists, and has posted 30 or more helpers in all seven of the team’s matches this season. Johnson has dished out a season-high 50 assists twice, against Luther on Sept. 10 and vs. Mount Mary on Sept. 16.
• DIGGING IT: Marri Reid and Johnson are the team’s digs leaders, compiling 82 and 74 digs, respectively, with Thompson chipping in 59. … Reid recorded a single-match, season-high 21 digs against Luther on Sept. 10.
• SERVING UP ACES: Maranatha Baptist has served up 50 aces through seven matches, and has gotten at least one ace from nine different players — led by Johnson with 10, Liberty Bailey with nine, and Henkel with eight.
• DOUBLING UP: Johnson has recorded five double-doubles through seven matches, highlighted by a 50-assist, 17-dig effort against Luther on Sept. 10, and a 50-assist, 14-dig showing against Mount Mary six days later.
• AS A TEAM: The Sabercats have recorded 301 kills (11.15 kps) and are hitting .182 through their first seven matches. Maranatha Baptist owns 275 assists, 50 aces and 434 digs. … Two of Maranatha Baptist’s four wins have been 3-0 sweeps. The Sabercats also own one four-set victory, and one win that was stretched to five sets. On the flip side, Maranatha Baptist’s three losses have been by 3-0, 3-1, and 3-2 decisions.
