WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team put an end to one streak, but was unable to put an end to another.
Â
The Cardinals snapped a three-game goalless drought — getting a first-half tally by
Cerim Palislamovic (Jacksonville, Fla.) — but that one goal was not enough, as UW-Eau Claire extended its season-opening winning streak to 11 straight with a 2-1 win over SMU Saturday at Ochrymowycz Field.
Â
The Blugolds struck first, as Ethan Andersen beat SMU goalkeeper
Daniel Sessler (Brookfield, Wis.) in the 20th minute for a 1-0 UW-Eau Claire lead.
Â
But the Cardinals refused to head into the half without putting themselves on the scoreboard.
Â
Enter Palislamovic.
Â
The Cardinals sophomore, off an assist from Jon Lindanger (Tysvaergag, Norway), sent the ball soaring over the head of Blugold goalkeeper Spencer Banks and into the net with just under two minutes remaining to knot the game at 1-1 heading into the intermission.
Â
The second half was every bit as intense as the first, and it appeared as if the team teams would have to settle for a 1-1 draw.
Â
UW-Eau Claire's Nathan Donovan, however, had other ideas, weaving past the Cardinal defense in the 72nd minute to score what proved to be the game-winner — sealing the Blugolds' 11th straight win.
Â
The Cardinals (3-4-2 overall) are back on the field on Wednesday, when they host Gustavus in a 7 p.m. MIAC contest at Ochrymowycz Field.
