SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into Friday’s conference matchup at St. Scholastica sitting at 7-7 overall, including 0-1 in conference play.
• LAST ACTION: The Cardinals finished 2-1 in their three matches at the Ripon Red Hawk Invitational last weekend, sandwiching a 3-1 win over Ripon and a 3-0 sweep of Maranatha Baptist around a 3-1 loss to Lakeland.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Friday’s match at St. Scholastica is the 14th road match in 15 contests for the Cardinals, whose lone home match thus far was a 3-0 loss to then-No. 24 Augsburg. Saint Mary’s will play five of its next seven contests at the Saint Mary’s Gym beginning Saturday against St. Catherine.
• ON THE ATTACK: Ciarra McNally (Lewiston, Minn.) — who led the team with 38 kills in three matches last weekend — heads into Friday’s matchup with St. Scholastica leading the team with 185 kills, followed by Abbie Stigler (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) with 139. Braidyn Ruetten (Holmen, Wis.) is third on the team with 93 kills, while Brenna Bruchert (Eau Claire, Wis.) and Elise Amerongen (Lake Elmo, Minn.) are sitting at 66 and 59 kills, respectively.
• DOUBLE DIGITS: McNally delivered a single-match season-high 28 kills against Grinnell on Sept. 2, and has now recorded 10 or more kills 31 times in her collegiate career — including seven matches of 20 or more kills.
• CAREER BESTS: The Cardinals have had two players post career-highs of 10 or more kills this season. Stigler recorded a career-best 21 kills against Webster on Sept. 16, while Bruchert posted 16 kills in the Cardinals’ 3-1 win over Ripon last Friday. … Stigler posted a career-high 19 digs against Ripon last Friday, and McNally notched a career-high 20 digs against Grinnell on Sept. 17, while Peyton Berg (Chatfield, Minn.) put up a career-best 25 digs vs. Grinnell on Sept. 2.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Mandy Schmidt (Mitchell, S.D.) and Larkin Clem (Elk River, Minn.) have shared the setting duties this season, with Schmidt owning a team-high 242 assists, followed closely by Clem with 222. … Schmidt has recorded at least 20 assists in a match six times this season — including a season-high 31 against Knox on Sept. 17 — and has delivered 20 or more helpers 20 times over the past two seasons. … Clem has posted 20 or more assists in each of SMU’s last four matches.
• JOINING THE CLUB: With her third assist against Marian on Sept. 10, Schmidt became the 13th player in program history to reach 1,000 career assists. Schmidt enters the weekend with 1,151 helpers, just nine assists back of Tayler MacVey ‘15 for 11th all-time. Rachel Monterastelli ’10 is next on the list, sitting in 10th at 1,471.
• DOUBLING UP: McNally picked up two double-doubles in three matches at last weekend’s Ripon Red Hawk Invitational, pushing her team-leading total to nine. Schmidt — who led the team with seven double-doubles last season — has five double-doubles this season, while Clem and Stigler both own two. … Clem posted her first collegiate double-double with 16 assists and 12 digs v. Marian on Sept. 10, and Stigler recorded her first collegiate double-double with 21 kills and 16 digs — both career-highs — against Webster on Sept. 16.
• DIGGING IT: Berg heads into Friday’s matchup against St. Scholastica owning a team-high 207 digs, and has collected 10 or more digs in 10 of the Cardinals’ 14 matches this season. … McNally is currently second on the team with 166 digs, followed by Schmidt with 119, Stigler with 88, and Hannah Herrem (Fall Creek, Wis.) with 75.
• SERVING UP ACES: Along with her team-leading 207 digs, Berg also leads the team — and the conference — with 30 service aces. Clem is second on the team with 19 aces, followed by Faith VanErp (Sartell, Minn.) with 16, and McNally and Herrem with 15 each. … As a team, Saint Mary’s owns 115 aces through 11 matches.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Four of Saint Mary’s seven wins have been 3-0 sweeps, with the other three wins coming in four sets. SMU has played four five-set matches, dropping all five. … Saint Mary’s has won the first, second and third sets in eight of its 14 matches, while going 6-2 in the fourth set.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: The 2021 season is the first at the helm for Cardinal coach Amber Zitzow — who picked up her first Saint Mary’s victory with a 3-0 win over Marian on Sept. 2. Zitzow spent the 2021 season as an assistant coach at UM-Morris, after serving 12 seasons at Rochester Community Technical College (RCTC), the first four as an assistant coach and the last eight as the Yellowjackets’ head coach.
ST. SCHOLASTICA SAINTS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Saints enter their weekend matches against Saint Mary’s and Saint Benedict sitting at 8-5 overall, including 1-1 after its first two MIAC contests.
• LAST TIME OUT: St. Scholastica came up empty in its three matches at the Pointer Invitational last weekend, sandwiching 3-2 losses to Carthage and St. Norbert around a 3-1 setback against UW-River Falls.
• GOING THE DISTANCE: St. Scholastica’s 3-2 loss to St. Norbert last Saturday marked the third straight time the Saints and Green Knights have been extended to a fifth sets.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Friday’s game against Saint Mary’s is just the third home match for the Saints, who are a perfect 2-0 on their home court, while going 6-3 away from Reif Gym — including 5-3 in neutral-site matches.
• IN A FUNK: The Saints head into the weekend in the midst of a four-match losing streak —‚ after opening the season with three straight wins and posting victories in eight of their first nine contests.
• ON THE ATTACK: Jessica Remer and Lindsey Baribeau have bene the Saints’ offensive leaders, compiling 193 and 112 kills, respectively. Ashley Larson is third on the team with 85 kills, followed by Ashley Larson with 83. … Baribeau is hitting a team-leading .296, while Remer boasts a .210 attack percentage.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Katie Brostrom has accounted for 447 of the team’s 597 assists, and has recorded 18 or more assists in all 13 matches — including five matches of 40 or more helpers. … Brostrom dished out a single-match, season-high 50 assists against Redlands on Sept. 2.
• DIGGING IT: St. Scholastica boasts five players with 100 or more digs through 13 matches, led by Alcia Draper with 337. Remer is second with 171, followed by Brostrom with 122, Caitlin Schneeweis with 117, and Bailee Hess with 108. … Draper has posted 20 or more digs in all 13 matches and notched a single-match, season-high 37 against Redlands on Sept. 2.
• DOUBLING UP: Remer has delivered 12 double-doubles through 13 matches, while Brostrom has chipped in six double-doubles
• SERVING UP ACES: St. Scholastica has served up 83 aces this season, led by Brostrom with 23. Brostrom is one of four Saints with 10 or more aces, being joined by Draper (14), Hess (11), and Schneeweis (10).
• BY THE NUMBERS: The Saints have played just two matches decided in three sets — both coming against UW-Superior. CSS has also collected four, four-set victories and a pair of five-setters. On the flip side, three of St. Scholastica’s five losses have gone the maximum five sets, with the other two decided in four sets. … CSS has put together winning streaks of three and five matches to go along with its current four-match losing streak.
