Cardinals battle Aurora to 1-1 deadlock

AURORA, Ill. — The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team pushed its record to 1-0-1 on Saturday — without even scoring a goal.

The Cardinals took advantage of a Spartan own goal in the 51st minute to escape with a 1-1 tie against Aurora Saturday.

Aurora got on the board early, as Nick Willner netted his first of the season, beating Cardinal goalkeeper Daniel Sessler (Brookfield, Ill.) just 18 minutes into the opening half.

That, however, would be the only time the Spartans would get one past Sessler, who finished with a season-high seven saves — including all four in the second half, when SMU was outshot 4-1.

Saint Mary's would get the equalizer — thanks to the Spartans, who deflected a shot into their own goal to knot the game at 1-1 just six minutes into the second half.

Jacob Clements (Holmen, Wis.) and Dane Hanks (Richfield, Minn.) led the Cardinals with two shots each, while Garret Jackson (West Linn, Ore.), Santiago Montero (Phoenix, Ariz.), and Nathan Riess (Timnath, Colo.) accounted for SMU's other three shot attempts.

The Cardinals (1-0-1 overall) are back in action on Sunday, heading to Rockford, Ill., for a 4 p.m. nonconference game against the Regents.
