SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into Wednesday’s home contest against Ripon sitting at 1-0-2 overall, having opened the year with a 2-1 win over Crown on Sept. 1, before adding ties to Aurora (1-1) and Rockford (2-2) last weekend.
• LAST ACTION: Saint Mary’s jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the game’s first 13 minutes, but Rockford netted a pair of unanswered goals — including the game-tying tally with less than six minutes remaining in regulation — as the teams battled to a 2-2 stalemate.
• CLOSE CALLS: With its back-to-back ties against Aurora and Rockford last weekend, 15 of Saint Mary’s last 17 games have been decided by one goal or less.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: The Cardinals four goals this season have come from four different players — Santiago Montero (Phoenix, Ariz.), Jack Hurley (Homewood, Ill.), Rolando Lopez (Berwyn, Ill.) and Jacob Clements (Holmen, Wis.).
• CAREER FIRSTS: The Cardinals have had two players net their first collegiate goals this season — Montero tallied his first as a Cardinal against Crown on Sept. 1, and Lopez netted his against Rockford last Sunday.
• NEW PK KING: After eight straight penalty-kick goals recorded by graduated senior Eli Szymanski, Hurley’s second-half PK goal against Crown Thursday marked the first not scored by Szymanski since Zach Bracken converted on Oct. 23, 2019.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Daniel Sessler (Brookfield, Ill.) picked up win No. 1 on the season, stopping five of the six Crown shots he faced on Sept. 1. The junior made a season-high seven saves in SMU’s 1-1 tie against Aurora last Saturday, and heads into Wednesday’s showdown with Ripon boasting a 0.75 goals-against-average and an .889 save percentage.
• CAREER-HIGH: Sessler equaled his single-game career-high with 12 saves against Macalester on Oct. 26, 2021. The sophomore also recorded 12 saves in the team’s first meeting with UW-Eau Claire on Sept. 26, 2021. … Sessler reached double-digits in saves three times in 2021, adding a 10-save effort against Concordia on Oct. 2.
• STREAKING: With their 2-1 victory over Crown on Sept. 1, the Cardinals improved to 5-1-1 in their last seven season-openers, the lone blemish a 3-0 loss to the University of Dubuque a year ago, and a 1-1 tie with St. Olaf during the COVID-shortened 2020 season.
• NIGHT AND DAY: The Cardinals hold a 3-1 scoring edge in the game’s opening half, while being outscored 3-2 in the second half. Saint Mary’s netted 11 of its 18 goals last season after the halftime break.
• DOMINATION: With their season-opening, 2-1 win over Crown on Sept. 1, SMU improved to 6-1-1 all-time against the Polars — including a 5-0-1 mark in the teams’ last six meetings.
• NEW THIS YEAR: The NCAA implemented a new rule beginning with the 2022 that will eliminate all overtimes in regular-season games. Games that are deadlocked following the scheduled 90 minute will go in the books as ties. Once in post-season, if a game is tied following regulation, there will be two, 10-minute overtime periods — with no golden goal — followed by a shootout if the game is still tied.
RIPON RED HAWKS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Red Hawks head to Winona, Minn., still looking for their first win of the season, opening with a 3-0 loss to Wisconsin Lutheran and battling Lakeland to a 1-1 tie.
• LAST TIME OUT: Finley Manning scored the game-tying goal seven minutes into the second half, as Ripon rallied for a 1-1 tie with Lakeland last Saturday in Plymouth, Wis.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Wednesday’s game at Saint Mary’s is the third straight road game to open the season for the Red Hawks, who play five of their first six games away from home — the lone exception, this Saturday’s matchup against Eureka.
• OFFENSIVE LEADER: Finley Manning netted Ripon’s first goal of the season, scoring in the 52nd minute of last Saturday’s 1-1 tie against Lakeland. The goal was Manning’s first as a Red Hawk.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Andre Robertson collected the lone assist on Manning’s goal against Lakeland.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Kalan Narance has played all 180:00 minutes of Ripon’s first two games in goal, compiling a 2.00 goals-against-average and a .600 save percentage. Narance has made six saves in the Red Hawks’ first two games — with all six coming in Ripon’s season-opening 3-0 loss to Wisconsin Lutheran on Sept. 1.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Ripon has attempted 19 shots in two games — including 10 on goal — while the Red Hawks’ opponents own 22 shot attempts, 10 of which have found their mark.
