SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals enter their conference matchup against Augsburg on Monday sitting at 4-9 overall and 3-7 through the first 10 games of the conference schedule.
• LAST TIME OUT: Brooklyn Paulson (Holmen, Wis.) scored a team-high 18 points and led four Saint Mary’s players in double figures, as the Cardinals rolled to a 74-55 victory over St. Scholastica last Saturday in Duluth, Minn.
• FINALLY HOME: After playing five of their last six games on the road, Monday’s game against Augsburg is the first of three consecutive home contests. … SMU is 2-3 in its five home games this season, while sporting a 2-6 record away from the Saint Mary’s Gym.
• CLOSE CALLS: Six of the Cardinals’ last seven contests have been decided by 10 points or less. Along with a one-point loss to Bethel (60-59) last Wednesday, SMU lost to Saint Benedict (65-58) and Hamline (69-60), beat Massachusetts Institute of Technology (60-53), and fell to Penn State Behrend (71-65) and UW-Stevens Point (81-79 OT).
• CARRYING THE LOAD: Paulson heads into Monday’s matchup against Augsburg leading the team in scoring with a 15.2 ppg average, while Izzy Goettelman (Winona, Minn.) is also averaging in double figures at 11.7 ppg. … Paulson has netted 10 or more points in 11 of SMU’s 13 games this season. … Either Goettelman or Paulson has led or shared the team lead in scoring in 10 of their first 13 contests, with Alyssa Coleman (Matteson, Ill.), Ashley Streveler (Colby, Wis.), and Katelyn Cruze (Litchfield, Minn.) each leading the team in scoring once.
• GREATER THAN 20: Saint Mary’s has had a player score 20 or more points six times this season — including four of its last seven games. Paulson owns three games or 20 or more points, while Goettelman has scored 20 or more points twice and Streveler has eclipsed the 20-point mark once. … Paulson has scored 20 or more points 20 times in her collegiate career, while Goettelman has achieved the feat three times and Streveler once.
• CLIMBING THE LADDER: Paulson, who recorded her 1,000th career point against Gustavus on Feb. 2, 2022, is sitting sixth all-time with 1,351 career points. Next up on the list — Ashley Luehmann ’06, who is fifth at 1,438.
• ALONE AT THE TOP: With her two 3-pointers against St. Catherine on Dec. 7, Paulson surpassed Ashley Luehmann ’06 as the all-time career-leader in 3-pointers made. Paulson heads into Monday’s game vs. Augsburg with 226 career 3-pointers. The senior also holds the career mark for 3-pointers attempted at 646.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: Saint Mary’s got at least three points from 10 of the 11 players who took the court against Carleton on Dec. 3, and put four players in double figures for the first time this season — Alyssa Coleman (Matteson, Ill.) netted a team-high 17 points, followed by Streveler with 15, Goettelman with 11, and Paulson with 10.
• PERFECTION: Paulson was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line in the Cardinals’ 74-55 win over St. Scholastica last Saturday. The 10 made free throws in 10 attempts were a career high and marked the first time an SMU player has gone 10-for-10 or better since Hallie Schmeling was 10-for-10 against St. Catherine on Feb. 13, 2019.
• CAREER HIGHS: Streveler became the fifth Cardinal player to recorded a career-high game of 10 or more points with her 22-point effort against Hamline on Jan. 4. Goettelman (23 points), Coleman (17), Cruze (14), and Graysin Hartjes (Kaukauna, Wis. / 10) have also posted career-best games this season.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Paulson leads the Cardinals with 92 rebounds (7.1 rpg), followed by Cruze (76. 5.8 rpg) and Goettelman (62, 4.8 rpg). … SMU has had a player recorded 10 rebounds in a game four times — Cruze has done it three times and Paulson once.
• DOUBLING UP: Paulson picked up her first double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds against St. Scholastica last Saturday. It is the sixth double-double of her collegiate career. … Cruze collected the Cardinals’ first double-double of the season — and the first of her collegiate career — against Macalester on Nov. 22, scoring 11 points and adding 10 rebounds. The junior matched that 11-point, 10-rebound effort against MIT on Dec. 30 for double-double No. 2. … The 10 rebounds are a career-high for Cruze.
• FROM BEYOND THE ARC: The Cardinals poured in a season-high 12 3-pointers in their 81-67 win over Carleton on Dec. 3. SMU’s 12 3-pointers against the Knights were just three shy of the single-game program record of 15, set against Concordia on Feb. 12, 2022. … Paulson leads the team with 26 3-pointers, followed by Streveler with 22 and Goettelman with 16. As a team, SMU has drained 85 treys — with Paulson, Streveler, and Goettelman accounting for 64 of them.
• LENDING A HAND: Streveler boasts a team-high 41 assists, 10 up on Paulson, while Goettelman has chipped in 17 helpers. The trio have combined for 88 of SMU’s 138 assists through 13 games. … Paulson and Goettelman have each recorded a season-high seven-assist game this season — Paulson against Carleton on Dec. 4 and Goettelman vs. UW-Stevens Point on Dec. 14.
• COMEBACK FOR THE AGES: Saint Mary’s overcame its largest fourth-quarter deficit since the NCAA switched from halves to quarters prior to the 2015-16 season against St. Olaf on Dec. 2, rallying from 19 points down to beat the Oles 62-60.
• WORKING OVERTIME: The Cardinals’ 81-79 loss to UW-Stevens Point on Dec. 14 was its first overtime game of the season. The Cardinals played just one overtime game a year ago, falling to Hamline 75-71 on Nov. 23, 2021. The Cardinals played a single-season, program-record four overtime games during the 2019-20 season, including three that were decided by two points.
• PROGRAM FIRSTS: The Cardinals’ games against Penn State Behrend and Massachusetts Institute of Technology at the Music City Classic on Dec. 29-30 marked the first time in program history that the teams had met on the basketball court. SMU fell to Penn State Behrend 71-65, while knocking off MIT 60-53.
• BY THE NUMBERS:The Cardinals are shooting 38.3 percent from the field (280-for-731), with 85 3-pointers, and are 165-for-235 (70.2 %) from the free throw line. … SMU is averaging 62.3 ppg, while the Cardinals’ opponents are scoring at a 67.7 ppg clip. … The Cardinals’ 81 points in their 81-67 win over Carleton on Dec. 3 were a season-high, and the most since scoring 85 points against those same Knights in an 85-58 win in the teams’ first meeting a year ago.
AUGSBURG AUGGIES SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Auggies enter Monday’s conference showdown at Saint Mary’s sitting at 8-5 overall, while owning a 5-5 mark through 10 conference contests.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Auggies started slow and never recovered in their conference game against St. Olaf last Saturday, falling behind 34-27 at the half, and getting outscored 40-18 in the second half in falling to the Oles 74-45.
• ROAD TRIP: Monday’s game against Saint Mary’s is the first of back-to-back road games for Augsburg, which is sitting 4-4 away from Si Melby Hall. Last Saturday’s loss to St. Olaf was the Auggies’ first home loss of the season, dropping them to 4-1 on their home court.
• NONCONFERENCE DOMINANCE: The Auggies were a perfect 3-0 in nonconference play this season, dispatching of UW-River Falls (63-45), Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (65-61), and Pomona-Pitzer (66-53).
• LIMPING IN: Last Saturday’s lopsided loss to St. Olaf was Augsburg’s second straight setback, having dropped a 54-52 decision to St. Catherine last Wednesday. … After opening the season 5-1, Augsburg has gone 3-4 in its last seven contests.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Augsburg heads into Monday’s showdown against Saint Mary’s boasting a pair of players who are averaging in double figures in scoring. Anja Smith leads the Auggie offensive attack with a 15.9 ppg average, while Jaley Coplin is sitting at 14.9 ppg. Kalena Myers is third on the team, owning a 9.8 ppg mark. … Augsburg has had a player score 20 or more points five times, including a season-high 26 points by Smith against Carleton on Nov. 30. … Coplin or Smith have led the team in scoring in 11 of the team’s 13 games — the lone exceptions, Myers’ 19-point showing against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Nov. 25, and Alli Born’s 14-point showing against Gustavus on Dec. 10.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Along with her team-leading 15.9 ppg scoring average, Smith also leads the Auggies in rebounds with 78 (6.0 rpg), followed by Samailya Buchanan with 67 (5.2 rpg), Coplin (53, 4.8 rpg), and Grace Eastman (50, 3.8 rpg). … Smith and Buchanan have each posted a single-game season-high 12 rebounds — Smith against Carleton on Nov. 30 and Buchanan against UW-River Falls on Nov. 15.
• FROM DOWNTOWN: Augsburg has knocked down 76 3-pointers this season, led by Coplin with 28 and Smith with 17. … Augsburg has gotten at least one 3 from nine different players.
• LENDING A HAND: The Auggies boast five players who have collected at least 10 assists through 13 games. Katie Manecke leads the way with 24 helpers, one more than Myers and two up on Buchanan, while Coplin owns 13 assists and Eastman has 12.
• BY THE NUMBERS: As a team, Augsburg is shooting 37.2 percent from the field (285-for-765), with 76 3-pointers, and are 116 of 197 (58.9 %) from the free throw line. … The Auggies are averaging 58.6 ppg, while their opponents are scoring at a 57.3 ppg clip. … Augsburg has eclipsed the 70-point mark just once this season, netting a season-high 75 points in dropping St. Scholastica 75-54 on Jan. 5. On the flip side, the Auggies have surrendered 70 or more points twice — including a season-high 82 in falling to Saint Benedict 82-68 on Dec. 3.
