SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals enter their second conference meeting against Macalester on Wednesday sitting at 4-10 overall and 3-8 through the first 11 games of the conference schedule.
• LAST TIME OUT: Brooklyn Paulson (Holmen, Wis.) scored a team-high 15 points, but the Cardinals could not overcome a sluggish first half, falling to Augsburg 50-44 on Monday at the Saint Mary’s Gym.
• FINALLY HOME: After playing five of their last six games on the road, Wednesday’s game against Macalester is the second of three consecutive home contests. … SMU is 2-4 in its six home games this season, while sporting a 2-6 record away from the Saint Mary’s Gym.
• CLOSE CALLS: Seven of the Cardinals’ last eight contests have been decided by 10 points or less. Along with a six-point loss to Augsburg on Monday, SMU lost to Bethel (60-59), Saint Benedict (65-58), and Hamline (69-60), beat Massachusetts Institute of Technology (60-53), and fell to Penn State Behrend (71-65) and UW-Stevens Point (81-79 OT).
• CARRYING THE LOAD: Paulson heads into Wednesday’s matchup against Macalester leading the team in scoring with a 15.1 ppg average, while Izzy Goettelman (Winona, Minn.) is also averaging in double figures at 11.1 ppg. … Paulson has netted 10 or more points in 12 of SMU’s 14 games this season. … Either Goettelman or Paulson has led or shared the team lead in scoring in 11 of their first 14 contests, with Alyssa Coleman (Matteson, Ill.), Ashley Streveler (Colby, Wis.), and Katelyn Cruze (Litchfield, Minn.) each leading the team in scoring once.
• GREATER THAN 20: Saint Mary’s has had a player score 20 or more points six times this season. Paulson owns three games or 20 or more points, while Goettelman has scored 20 or more points twice and Streveler has eclipsed the 20-point mark once. … Paulson has scored 20 or more points 20 times in her collegiate career, while Goettelman has achieved the feat three times and Streveler once.
• CLIMBING THE LADDER: Paulson, who recorded her 1,000th career point against Gustavus on Feb. 2, 2022, is sitting sixth all-time with 1,366 career points. Next up on the list — Ashley Luehmann ’06, who is fifth at 1,438.
• ALONE AT THE TOP: With her two 3-pointers against St. Catherine on Dec. 7, Paulson surpassed Ashley Luehmann ’06 as the all-time career-leader in 3-pointers made. Paulson heads into Wednesday’s game vs. Macalester with 228 career 3-pointers. The senior also holds the career mark for 3-pointers attempted at 652.
• NO REST: Paulson has started every game during her five-year collegiate career — a span of 96 consecutive starts. Her 96 career starts rank fifth all-time. Jessica Thone ’13 holds the school record with 104 straight starts.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: Saint Mary’s got at least three points from 10 of the 11 players who took the court against Carleton on Dec. 3, and put four players in double figures for the first time this season —Coleman netted a team-high 17 points, followed by Streveler with 15, Goettelman with 11, and Paulson with 10.
• PERFECTION: Paulson was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line in the Cardinals’ 74-55 win over St. Scholastica last Saturday, and added a 5-for-5 showing from the line against Augsburg on Monday. The 10 made free throws in 10 attempts were a career high and marked the first time an SMU player has gone 10-for-10 or better since Hallie Schmeling was 10-for-10 against St. Catherine on Feb. 13, 2019.
• CAREER HIGHS: Streveler became the fifth Cardinal player to recorded a career-high game of 10 or more points with her 22-point effort against Hamline on Jan. 4. Goettelman (23 points), Coleman (17), Cruze (14), and Graysin Hartjes (Kaukauna, Wis. / 10) have also posted career-best games this season.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Paulson leads the Cardinals with 99 rebounds (7.1 rpg), followed by Cruze (82, 5.9 rpg), Goettelman (65, 4.6 rpg), and Streveler (53, 3.8 rpg). … SMU has had a player record 10 rebounds in a game four times — Cruze has done it three times and Paulson once.
• DOUBLING UP: Paulson picked up her first double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds against St. Scholastica last Saturday. It is the sixth double-double of her collegiate career. … Cruze collected the Cardinals’ first double-double of the season — and the first of her collegiate career — against Macalester on Nov. 22, scoring 11 points and adding 10 rebounds. The junior matched that 11-point, 10-rebound effort against MIT on Dec. 30 for double-double No. 2. … The 10 rebounds are a career-high for Cruze.
• FROM BEYOND THE ARC: The Cardinals poured in a season-high 12 3-pointers in their 81-67 win over Carleton on Dec. 3. SMU’s 12 3-pointers against the Knights were just three shy of the single-game program record of 15, set against Concordia on Feb. 12, 2022. … Paulson leads the team with 28 3-pointers, followed by Streveler with 24 and Goettelman with 17. As a team, SMU has drained 90 treys — with Paulson, Streveler, and Goettelman accounting for 69 of them.
• LENDING A HAND: Streveler boasts a team-high 43 assists, 12 up on Paulson, while Goettelman has chipped in 19 helpers. The trio have combined for 93 of SMU’s 148 assists through 14 games. … Paulson and Goettelman have each recorded a season-high seven-assist game this season — Paulson against Carleton on Dec. 4 and Goettelman vs. UW-Stevens Point on Dec. 14.
• COMEBACK FOR THE AGES: Saint Mary’s overcame its largest fourth-quarter deficit since the NCAA switched from halves to quarters prior to the 2015-16 season against St. Olaf on Dec. 2, rallying from 19 points down to beat the Oles 62-60.
• WORKING OVERTIME: The Cardinals’ 81-79 loss to UW-Stevens Point on Dec. 14 was its first overtime game of the season. The Cardinals played just one overtime game a year ago, falling to Hamline 75-71 on Nov. 23, 2021. The Cardinals played a single-season, program-record four overtime games during the 2019-20 season, including three that were decided by two points.
• PROGRAM FIRSTS: The Cardinals’ games against Penn State Behrend and Massachusetts Institute of Technology at the Music City Classic on Dec. 29-30 marked the first time in program history that the teams had met on the basketball court. SMU fell to Penn State Behrend 71-65, while knocking off MIT 60-53.
• BY THE NUMBERS:The Cardinals are shooting 37.5 percent from the field (295-for-787), with 90 3-pointers, and are 174-for-247 (70.4 %) from the free throw line. … SMU is averaging 61.0 ppg, while the Cardinals’ opponents are scoring at a 66.4 ppg clip. … The Cardinals’ 81 points in their 81-67 win over Carleton on Dec. 3 were a season-high, and the most since scoring 85 points against those same Knights in an 85-58 win in the teams’ first meeting a year ago.
MACALESTER SCOTS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Scots head into their second meeting with Saint Mary’s this season sitting at 4-10 overall, including a 3-8 mark in its first 11 MIAC contests.
• LAST TIME OUT: Concordia outscored the Scots 14-3 in the first quarter and Macalester never recovered, falling to the Cobbers 72-54 Monday at Leonard Center Gym in St. Paul, Minn.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Macalester plays three of its next four contests on the road, beginning Wednesday at Saint Mary’s. The Scots have recorded three of their four wins on their home court, going 3-3 at Leonard Center, while sporting a 1-7 mark on the road.
• LIMPING IN: Macalester’s 72-54 loss to Concordia on Monday pushed its losing streak to three straight. The Scots have not won since winning back-to-back games over St. Olaf (57-51) and St. Scholastica (80-58) on Jan. 4 and Jan. 7, respectively.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Peyton Starks is the only Macalester player averaging in double figures in scoring, entering Wednesday’s matchup with Saint Mary’s sitting at 18.7 ppg. Solana Cushing is second on the team with an 8.3 ppg average, followed by Katherine Norquist at 7.9 ppg and Emma LaFrenz at 7.2 ppg. … Starks has scored in double figures in all 14 games this season — including a season-high 30-point effort against St. Scholastica on Jan. 7.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: LaFrenz has hauled in a team-high 131 rebounds in 14 game, averaging 10.9 rpg. Starks has chipped in 94 boards (6.7 rpg), and Andrea Palmen is third on the team with 40 (2.9 rpg). … LaFrenz has delivered seven games with 10 or more rebounds — including a season-high 23 boards against Bethel on Dec. 10. … LaFrenz has amassed a team-leading three double-doubles, while Starks has collected two.
• FROM DOWNTOWN: Cushing has knocked down a team-high 22 rebounds this season, while Palmen has also reached double-digits with 13 treys. … As a team, Macalester has hit 58 3-pointers and is shooting 25.1 percent from behind the arc (58-for-231).
• LENDING A HAND: The Scots boast four players who have dished out 20 or more assists, led by Cushing with 36. Palmen and Norquist are tied for second with 22 helpers, one more than LaFrenz.
• STEALING THE SHOW: Starks has collected a team-best 26 steals, with Palmen added 10. The duo have accounted for 36 of the team’s 71 steals.
• BLOCK PARTY: Starks, LaFrenz, and Ellie Corbett have combined for 36 of the team’s 53 blocks through 14 games. Starks leads the way with 13 blocks, one more than LaFrenz and two up on Corbett.
• BY THE NUMBERS: The Scots are shooting 38.8 percent from the field (309-for-797), with 58 3-pointers, and are 103-for-158 (65.2 %) from the free throw line. … Macalester is averaging 55.6 ppg, while its opponents are scoring at a 66.8 ppg clip. … Macalester has scored 70 or more points four times this season, including a 72-point effort in beating Saint Mary’s 72-56 in the teams’ first meeting on Nov. 22. The Scots netted a season-high 80 points in rubbing St. Scholastica 80-58 on Jan. 7. On the flip side, Macalester has allowed 70 or more points five times, including surrendering 89 in falling to Gustavus 89-40 on Dec. 3.
