SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals enter their second conference meeting against Concordia on Saturday sitting at 5-10 overall and 4-8 through the first 11 games of the conference schedule.
• LAST TIME OUT: Brooklyn Paulson (Holmen, Wis.) scored 23 points and added a career-high 15 rebounds in leading the Cardinals to a 73-65 conference win over Macalester Wednesday at the Saint Mary’s Gym.
• FINALLY HOME: After playing five of their last six games on the road, Saturday’s game against Concordia is the Cardinals’ third three consecutive home contest. … SMU is 3-4 in its seven home games this season, while sporting a 2-6 record away from the Saint Mary’s Gym.
• CLOSE CALLS: Eight of the Cardinals’ last nine contests have been decided by 10 points or less. Along with a six-point loss to Augsburg on Monday, and Wednesday’s eight-point 73-64 win over Macalester two days later, SMU lost to Bethel (60-59), Saint Benedict (65-58), and Hamline (69-60), beat Massachusetts Institute of Technology (60-53), and fell to Penn State Behrend (71-65) and UW-Stevens Point (81-79 OT).
• CARRYING THE LOAD: Paulson heads into Saturday’s matchup against Concordia leading the team in scoring with a 15.7 ppg average, while Izzy Goettelman (Winona, Minn.) is also averaging in double figures at 10.9 ppg. … Paulson has netted 10 or more points in 13 of SMU’s 15 games this season. … Either Goettelman or Paulson has led or shared the team lead in scoring in 12 of their first 15 contests, with Alyssa Coleman (Matteson, Ill.), Ashley Streveler (Colby, Wis.), and Katelyn Cruze (Litchfield, Minn.) each leading the team in scoring once.
• GREATER THAN 20: Saint Mary’s has had a player score 20 or more points seven times this season. Paulson owns four games or 20 or more points, while Goettelman has scored 20 or more points twice and Streveler has eclipsed the 20-point mark once. … Paulson has scored 20+ points 21 times in her collegiate career, while Goettelman has achieved the feat three times and Streveler once.
• CLIMBING THE LADDER: Paulson, who recorded her 1,000th career point against Gustavus on Feb. 2, 2022, is sitting sixth all-time with 1,389 career points. Next up on the list — Ashley Luehmann ’06, who is fifth at 1,438.
• ALONE AT THE TOP: With her two 3-pointers against St. Catherine on Dec. 7, Paulson surpassed Ashley Luehmann ’06 as the all-time career-leader in 3-pointers made. Paulson heads into Saturday’s game vs. Concordia with 231 career 3-pointers. The senior also holds the career mark for 3-pointers attempted at 656.
• NO REST: Paulson has started every game during her five-year collegiate career — a span of 97 consecutive starts. Her 97 career starts rank fifth all-time. Jessica Thone ’13 holds the school record with 104 straight starts.
• PERFECTION: Paulson was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line in the Cardinals’ 74-55 win over St. Scholastica last Saturday, added a 5-for-5 showing from the line against Augsburg on Monday, and was 2-for-2 on Wednesday against Macalester, giving her 17 consecutive made free throws … Paulson’s 10 made free throws in 10 attempts were a career high and marked the first time an SMU player has gone 10-for-10 or better since Hallie Schmeling was 10-for-10 against St. Catherine on Feb. 13, 2019.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: Saint Mary’s got at least three points from 10 of the 11 players who took the court against Carleton on Dec. 3, and put four players in double figures for the first time this season —Coleman netted a team-high 17 points, followed by Streveler with 15, Goettelman with 11, and Paulson with 10.
• CAREER HIGHS: Streveler became the fifth Cardinal player to recorded a career-high game of 10 or more points with her 22-point effort against Hamline on Jan. 4. Goettelman (23 points), Coleman (17), Cruze (14), and Graysin Hartjes (Kaukauna, Wis. / 10) have also posted career-best games this season.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Paulson leads the Cardinals with 114 rebounds (7.6 rpg), followed by Cruze (86, 5.7 rpg), Goettelman (70, 4.7 rpg), and Streveler (61, 4.3 rpg). … Paulson hauled in a career-high 15 rebounds against Macalester on Wednesday. It was the highest single-game performance since Rachel Kedl collected 16 boards against Hamline on Jan. 11, 2020. … SMU has had a player record 10 rebounds in a game five times — Cruze has done it three times and Paulson twice.
• DOUBLING UP: Paulson, who picked up her first double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds against St. Scholastica last Saturday, added her second with 23 points and a career-best 15 boards against Macalester on Wednesday. Paulson now owns seven double-doubles in her collegiate career. … Cruze collected the Cardinals’ first double-double of the season — and the first of her collegiate career — against Macalester on Nov. 22, scoring 11 points and adding 10 rebounds. The junior matched that 11-point, 10-rebound effort against MIT on Dec. 30 for double-double No. 2. … The 10 rebounds are a career-high for Cruze.
• FROM BEYOND THE ARC: The Cardinals poured in a season-high 12 3-pointers in their 81-67 win over Carleton on Dec. 3. SMU’s 12 3-pointers against the Knights were just three shy of the single-game program record of 15, set against Concordia on Feb. 12, 2022. … Paulson leads the team with 31 3-pointers, followed by Streveler with 24 and Goettelman with 19. As a team, SMU has drained 96 treys — with Paulson, Streveler, and Goettelman accounting for 74 of them.
• LENDING A HAND: Streveler boasts a team-high 49 assists, 14 up on Paulson, while Goettelman has chipped in 19 helpers. The trio have combined for 103 of SMU’s 164 assists through 15 games. … Paulson and Goettelman have each recorded a season-high seven-assist game this season — Paulson against Carleton on Dec. 4 and Goettelman vs. UW-Stevens Point on Dec. 14.
• COMEBACK FOR THE AGES: Saint Mary’s overcame its largest fourth-quarter deficit since the NCAA switched from halves to quarters prior to the 2015-16 season against St. Olaf on Dec. 2, rallying from 19 points down to beat the Oles 62-60.
• WORKING OVERTIME: The Cardinals’ 81-79 loss to UW-Stevens Point on Dec. 14 was its first overtime game of the season. The Cardinals played just one overtime game a year ago, falling to Hamline 75-71 on Nov. 23, 2021. The Cardinals played a single-season, program-record four overtime games during the 2019-20 season, including three that were decided by two points.
• PROGRAM FIRSTS: The Cardinals’ games against Penn State Behrend and Massachusetts Institute of Technology at the Music City Classic on Dec. 29-30 marked the first time in program history that the teams had met on the basketball court. SMU fell to Penn State Behrend 71-65, while knocking off MIT 60-53.
• BY THE NUMBERS:The Cardinals are shooting 37.7 percent from the field (321-for-851), with 96 3-pointers, and are 189-for-267 (70.8 %) from the free throw line. … SMU is averaging 61.8 ppg, while the Cardinals’ opponents are scoring at a 66.3 ppg clip. … The Cardinals’ 81 points in their 81-67 win over Carleton on Dec. 3 were a season-high, and the most since scoring 85 points against those same Knights in an 85-58 win in the teams’ first meeting a year ago.
CONCORDIA COBBERS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cobbers head into Saturday’s road contest at Saint Mary’s sitting at 12-3 overall, while sporting a 9-3 record through their first 12 MIAC contests.
• LAST TIME OUT: Concordia outscored Augsburg 18-8 in the fourth quarter, as the Cobbers cruised to a convincing 63-49 conference victory Wednesday evening at Memorial Auditorium in Moorhead, Minn.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Saturday’s game against Saint Mary’s is the first of back-to-back road games for the Cobbers, who play just four of their last 10 contests on the road. The Cobbers, who are 5-1 in their six home contests – while going 5-2 away from Memorial Auditorium — play at St. Olaf on Wednesday, before three straight home games vs. Bethel, Saint Benedict and Macalester. Games vs. St. Catherine and Gustavus on Feb. 4 and Feb. 8 closes out CC’s road schedule, and the Cobbers will host St. Scholastica, Carleton, and Hamline in their final three contests of the regular season.
• ON A ROLL: With their win over Augsburg on Wednesday, Concordia pushed its winning streak to four straight. The Cobbers have now won eight of their last nine games, sandwiching a pair of four-game winning streaks around a 57-44 loss to St. Catherine on Jan. 7. … All told, Concordia’s 12 wins this season have come via three, four-game winning streaks — CC also opened the season with four consecutive victories.
• NONCONFERENCE DOMINATION: Concordia rolled to a perfect 3-0 showing in its three nonconference games, winning each contest by 11 or more points. CC routed UM-Morris 85-60 on Nov. 8, before winning both of its games at the D3hoops.com Classic on Dec. 29-30 — beating Amherst 79-68 and Salve Regina 82-42.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Concordia heads into Saturday’s matchup boasting three players who are averaging in double figures in scoring. Emily Beseman leads the way for CC, owning a 14.1 ppg scoring average, with Carlee Sieben and Makayla Anderson coming in with 12.9 ppg and 12.1 ppg averages, respectively. … CC has had a player score 20 or more points in a game six times — including 20 points by Beseman and 27 by Sieben against UM-Morris on Nov. 9. … Beseman netted a season-high 28 points against Hamline on Jan. 14.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Anderson has amassed a team-leading 140 rebounds (9.3 ppg) in 15 games, followed by Beseman with 84 (5.6 rpg) and Symone Beld (82, 5.5 rpg). … Anderson owns the team’s top two single-game rebounding performances — corralling 14 boards against Augsburg on Dec. 7 and a season-high 15 against Hamline on Jan. 14.
• DOUBLING UP: Anderson has recorded four double-doubles this season — 14 points, 11 boards vs. UM-Morris, 11 points, 10 rebounds vs. Bethel, 23 points, 13 rebounds vs. Amherst, and 14 points, 10 rebounds vs. Saint Benedict — while Beseman posted a 20-point, 10-rebound showing against UM-Morris on Nov. 9.
• RAINING IN 3s: Concordia has knocked down 106 3-pointers this season and is shooting 31.3 percent from behind the arc (106-for-339). Sieben leads the long-range Cobber shooters, owning 39 3s, with Beseman (19), Jordyn Kahler (13) and Autumn Thompson (11) also owning 10 or more treys. …
• LENDING A HAND: CC has seven players who have collected at least 10 assists through 15 games, led by Beseman with 46 and Sieben with 38. Anderson (26), Thompson (24), Beld (15), Kahler (11), and Greta Tollefson (11) have also dished out 10+ helpers.
• STEALING THE SHOW:Beseman has amassed a team-leading 36 steals, followed by Anderson with 21. Sieben and Kahler have both recorded 17 steals, with Beld and Thompson next in line with 15 each.
• WORKING OVERTIME x 2: Concordia has played one overtime game this season, needing a pair of extra sessions to beat Amherst 79-68 at the D3hoops.com Classic on Dec. 29.
• BY THE NUMBERS: The Cobbers are shooting 40.3 percent from the field (369-for-915), with 106 3-pointers, and have gone 210-for-263 (79.8 %) from the free throw line. … CC is averaging 70.3 ppg, while limiting its opponents to just 57.3 ppg. … Concordia has scored 80 or more points four times this season, including a season-high 95-point performance in beating St. Olaf 95-67 on Nov. 22. On the flip side, CC has yet to allow an opponent to score 70 or more points in a game.
